  • Richard Allen Guilty in Delphi Murders

Richard Allen, a resident of Delphi, Indiana, has been found guilty on all charges in the double murders of 14-year-old Liberty 'Libby' German and 13-year-old Abigail 'Abby' Williams. The verdict was delivered on Monday, November 11, 2024, after more than three days of jury deliberations in a trial that began on October 18, 2024.

Allen was convicted of two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder for the killings that occurred on February 13, 2017, when the girls vanished during a hike on the Monon High Trail. The prosecution presented key evidence, including dozens of confessions made by Allen while incarcerated, which he made to his wife, mother, a psychologist, and other prison employees and inmates. These confessions were recorded and played for the jury, with Allen admitting to the crimes and providing details such as planning to sexually assault the victims but fleeing when he saw a van nearby, and cutting the girls' throats before covering their bodies with sticks[1][3][5].

The defense argued that Allen's confessions were involuntary and stemmed from his mental health issues, including being in a psychotic state after months in solitary confinement. They also pointed out the lack of physical evidence tying Allen to the crime scene and questioned the accuracy of the police analysis of Allen's gun, which linked an unspent cartridge found near the girls' bodies to Allen's Sig Sauer Model P226[1][3][5].

Allen had initially told police he was on the trail around the time the girls were killed but denied any involvement. He was arrested on October 26, 2022, after police matched the unspent cartridge to his pistol. Despite living in Delphi for over five years after the murders, Allen was identified as the suspect known as 'Bridge Guy' from a grainy cellphone video recorded by one of the girls[1][3][5].

The community of Delphi has expressed relief and a sense of healing following the verdict, with the families of the victims awaiting the sentencing scheduled for December 20, 2024[3][5].

  • Wisconsin Father Fakes Disappearance
Ryan Borgwardt, a married father of three from Wisconsin, is believed by police to have staged his own disappearance. He was reported missing in August after his vehicle and trailer were found in Green Lake County, and a capsized kayak, his fishing rod, and tackle box with his license were discovered in Green Lake. An extensive 54-day search involving search dogs and diving teams was conducted but yielded no sign of Borgwardt. However, the investigation took a different turn when Canadian authorities checked for Borgwardt's name a day after he was reported missing. Further investigation revealed that Borgwardt had replaced his laptop's hard drive, deleted his internet browser history, taken photos of his passport, moved funds to a foreign bank account, and communicated with a woman in Uzbekistan. Additionally, he had taken out a $375,000 life insurance policy months before his disappearance. These findings led authorities to conclude that Borgwardt was not in the lake and is now believed to be somewhere in Europe. The sheriff has appealed to Borgwardt to contact his family or the authorities, acknowledging the emotional impact on his children who initially believed their father had drowned.

The man was taken into custody after committing 'lewd acts' while living in the crawl space. The family plans to secure the crawl space to prevent such incidents in the future.

  • California Teen Buried Alive by Jealous Boyfriend
The case involves the tragic murder of 17-year-old Justine Vanderschoot by her boyfriend, Daniel Bezemer, and his best friend, Brandon Fernandez. The incident occurred on Labor Day in 2003. Bezemer, who was 18 at the time, had developed deep-seated jealousy in their relationship, which prosecutors described as being 'defined by his jealousy and control.' Before the murder, Bezemer and Fernandez had already dug a grave in the California woods. After leaving a family dinner, Bezemer strangled Justine, and they then transported her body to the pre-dug grave. There, they stripped her of her clothes, poured what investigators believe to be methanol on her, and buried her. Notably, both perpetrators later admitted that Justine had made noises and moved in the grave, and a pathologist found evidence consistent with her being buried alive, although it is also possible she had breathed in dirt before burial. The grave was discovered when Justine's family reported her missing, and the investigation led to the arrest of Bezemer and Fernandez. Both men have since been involved in legal proceedings, including parole hearings and petitions, which have been denied due to their fabrication of events related to the murder. Justine's family has been active in advocating for teen dating violence education in California schools to prevent similar tragedies[1]

  • Hurricane Helene Scam Victim
Rod Ashby, a resident of Sanford, North Carolina, has been through a series of devastating events. During Hurricane Helene, which hit in September, his mountain home in Elk Park near Banner Elk was swept away by floodwaters while he and his wife, Kim, were inside. The couple was separated when they hit a tree, and Rod has not seen Kim since. Despite the ongoing search for his wife, Rod faced another setback when he was scammed out of nearly $40,000. He was trying to purchase a 2020 Ford F-350 from a website that claimed to be a Colorado car business selling repossessed cars. The scam involved a fake website mimicking a legitimate car dealership, where the scammer underpriced vehicles to lure victims. Rod wired the money but later discovered the scam when the truck was still listed for sale on the website. He has filed a police report and a fraud report, but the process to recover the money could take up to 90 days. This incident has further complicated Rod's efforts to continue searching for his wife in the mountains, as he needs a four-wheel drive vehicle to navigate the roads[1][3][5]

  • American Nurse Murdered in Hungary

Mackenzie 'Kenzie' Michalski, a 31-year-old American nurse practitioner from Portland, Oregon, was found dead while vacationing in Budapest, Hungary. Originally from New York, Michalski worked as a neurosurgery nurse practitioner at Providence St. Vincent since 2021. She was reported missing on November 5 after her last communication with friends, which included a text message sent around 12:45 a.m. from a bar in the Jewish ruin district of Budapest. Her friend, Gretchen Tower, who was traveling with her, had left for Italy earlier that day, and Michalski was supposed to follow the next day but never checked out of her Airbnb or boarded her flight[2][3].

Michalski's body was discovered after Hungarian police identified and apprehended a 37-year-old Irish citizen, M.L.T., who was seen with her in several nightclubs. The suspect confessed to the crime and led police to where he had hidden Michalski's body. The investigation was conducted by detectives from the VI District Police Department in Budapest[1][3].

Michalski was described by friends and colleagues as a very pure-hearted, adventurous, and dedicated caregiver. Her death has been met with deep sadness from her community, including Providence, which noted that this is the second loss of a nurse in the past two months[1].

The U.S. State Department was involved in the case, working closely with local authorities to assist in the search efforts and communicate with Michalski's family[2].
