"It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money". Well, that's what the seasoned con artist would
say.
This cheeky motto might seem like a tongue-in-cheek justification for their crafty heists. But
let's face it, sometimes it's hard to muster sympathy for their victims, especially when you
hear about the outlandish scams they've fallen for.
We've all heard about how some poor soul was taken for a ride by an outlandish con and
thought "how could anyone ever fall for that?!"
From the silver-tongued religious cult leaders who can convince their followers to part with
fortunes, to the ambitious street urchins executing a flawless Three-Card Monte, the art of the
scam is as diverse as it is cunning. And then there are those budding con artists, forever on
the lookout for an unsuspecting investor to swindle with their too-good-to-be-true get-rich-
quick-schemes.
But hold on, aren't we smarter these days? In our era of information overload, shouldn't it be
harder to pull the wool over our eyes? Unfortunately, not. If anything, it makes it easier!
We're just as vulnerable to scams today as our ancestors were centuries ago. The allure of a
quick win or a life-changing opportunity blinds even the savviest among us. [1]
But don't lose hope. There's good news! The psychology behind these scams is timeless. The
charismatic grifter, the vulnerable mark, and the promise of turning dreams into reality –
these elements remain unchanged. What evolves are the disguises these tricks wear to stay
one step ahead. So, they might have a facelift, but inside these cons are literally the oldest
trick in the book!
In fact, some scams are so brilliantly simple, they've barely changed at all. Why fix what ain't
broken, right?

Japanese billionaires used to call the shots.
They were leaders in innovation, whose products attracted a dedicated base of international
customers.
But that was then. This is now.
They’ve been eclipsed by American tech giants building their own rocket ships and Chinese tycoons
dominating our lives with super-apps.
But considering how long Japan isolated itself from the global market, it’s still impressive how they
emerged from business obscurity at all.
It’s even more impressive when you realise they’d already done it before.
There’s every reason to think Japanese billionaires will reclaim the world stage in the future. Then
again, Japan could ruin itself by repeating its same mistakes.
So how did Japan go from hermit kingdom to trading giant? What caused the rise and fall of their
financial elites? And did Japanese billionaires change the world more than they get credit for?
It’s time to Learn How History works as we audit “How Japan Went From Poor to Rich to Poor To
Rich”.

If your job sucks, just remember that the stakes are low.
Chances are messing up at work means working through lunch or being tepidly grilled in an HR meeting by a snidey stickler. It won’t mean being dragged to a dank dungeon, tortured and – if you’re lucky – publicly executed.
But for court jesters, bombing on stage was only the start of their troubles.
On the plus side, the benefits were out of this world. We’re talking wealth, comfort and respect. Plus, a snazzy outfit!
Afterall, how many jobs allow you to insult your country’s ruler directly to their face?
All you had to do is make sure each joke lands. But if you’ve ever been dragged to watch your brother-in-law’s 5-minute open mic set, then you know that comedy is a lot harder than it look.
Now ‘jester’ is no longer a viable job description. Yet the skillset and role has manifested into other areas and functions of society. As have the consequences.
They say dissecting a joke is like dissecting a frog: you might learn something, but the frog dies. With that in mind, it’s time to learn how history works as he examine the evolution of jesters: the worst best job in history.
The ancient Mesopotamian’s had the word “aluzinnu” which historians believe is the closet thing to the contemporary concept of ‘jester’ or ‘comedian’, but they also had the word ‘musihhu’ meaning ‘clown’ or ‘he who brings to laugh’.
Similarly, China’s King Zhuang of Chu had his own proto-jester. During his reign between 613-591 BC, a ‘you’ was someone who used humour to mock and joke. It was understood that no offence be taken so long as their earnest criticism be funny.
Likewise, Greece looked for someone to illuminate unspeakable truths with comedy, but often actors from comedies were thrown into the spotlight. And the thing about actors is they can act, but they can’t write!
As for Ancient Rome, some wealthy households had their own fool. But this wasn’t a guy who sat in your corner telling knock-knock jokes. This would be a guy who was, shall we say, not right in the head.
Nowadays, your rich neighbours will brag about getting the latest Tesla or a fridge that connects to wi-fi. Back then, yuppies bragged about the drooling buffoon they picked up at the boutique next to the slave auction.

Retirement will retire before you do.
At least, according to some doomsday economists. They say impending recessions, a drop in birth rates, and the younger generation’s insistence on never having kids means the West is set to have an aging population that will make Japan’s situation look Neverland.
But with its dependency on a stable economy, you can see why some fear we’ll be working until the day the Grim Reaper hands us a pink slip. Just look at what happened in France when the government delayed the retirement age by just a few years: Civil unrest, riots, and a whole bunch of angry French people. No one wants to see that! Working life during the ancient civilizations was so different because the conditions were so different. A life expectancy of 30-some years meant your short-lived career was likely a) very short-lived b) in back-breaking labour. And that goes double for the slaves!
Your day finished when your boss said it was finished, and the crack of the whip did more to motivate you than office posters of cats hanging from trees. On the flip side, anyone who lived long enough to get wrinkles was respected by society despite not being physically able to contribute to it.
Their wisdom and experience were seen as divine. So when you were in the labour market you were treated like garbage, but as soon as you survived it, you had street cred. Yet, your retirement relied on your own savings and family support. Without that, each day relied on the kindness of strangers.
From that point on the groundwork was set for a new way of thinking about work. But it took a lot of time and radical thinking to get where we are now. It’s time to learn How History Works as we figure out ‘When Was Retirement invented (and When Will it Die?’)

We couldn’t agree on whether it was black and blue or white and gold! People were at each
other’s throat all because of differences between eyes or device screens. It’s no wonder
journalism has polarized us: we were already polarized!
Of course, it didn’t start out like this. Right? Surely there was a time from the good ole days
where newspapers told the truth, journalists couldn’t be bought out and consumers were
never stuck in echo chambers.
You probably already know what your position on this question is. Even comedian Bill Burr
laments a time when you didn’t know how your local weatherman voted. Then again, Noam
Chomsky believes it’s always been the case that media outlets have had a secret agenda.
Although, he did doubt initials claims of the Cambodian genocide, which turned out to be
true. Maybe he knows as little as a stand-up comic?
Is there a grain of truth in journalism today or is objectivity like finding a needle in a hay
stack? Is it true that there’s no such thing as bad news and is the future of journalism one of
tribalism? The good news is you can relax. It doesn’t matter whether you wear a tin foil hat – or are
thinking of wearing one!
So it's time to learn How History Works because today, we’re going to fact-check the fact-checkers.

There’s no middle ground with this CEO.
His legacy ranges from the genius who streamlined corporations through revolutionary management techniques, to the fat cat who destroyed the American business landscape by making life worse for employees. [2]
Then there are those who say he ran a bona fide cult so steeped in capitalistic fever that even Ayn Rand would have cringed.
He retired with a $417 million severance package - the biggest ever at that point in time. That’s enough to raise the eyebrows of even his most dedicated disciples.
Yet, he always saw himself as fighting for the little guy.
He championed the efficient infrastructure of small business over the sluggish mechanisms of big bureaucracy. Yet he never shied away from defending lucrative bonuses for CEOs such as himself.
Not even when firing scores of blue-collar factory workers!
His paradoxes all stem from his expertise as a chemical engineer.
A deep understanding of synthesising opposing elements, creating catalysts, and measuring explosive outcomes explains how his methods for success have split people down the middle.
ou could say his business approach was capitalism’s free radical – reactive, energetic, but short-lived.
Or was it?
Am I just playing devil’s advocate, or should we give the devil his due?
Were his techniques always destined for downfall or have other companies improved his formula?
And did General Electric collapse because of him or in spite of him?
It’s time to learn How History Works as we distil the corporate history of Jack Welch.

History is filled with pioneers: Christopher Columbus. Neil Armstrong. The first person to milk a cow. But being an innovator means taking risks and discovering the rules. It means being a guinea pig in your own experiment. And that’s no different when the land you’ve discovered is the internet.
Nowadays, dating apps like Tinder and Hinge make it even easier to connect with people online whereas Reddit and Discord are perfect for building a community of your own. And what about social media platforms? They are the best way to meet old friends and lose new ones.
Yet, none of this would have happened had it not been for a certain site that laid the groundwork for internet subcultures: Craigslist. [1]
The online classified ads board was set up all the way back in 1995, the same year as Toy Story, the world’s first computer animated movie. To us, that’s only 30 years ago (at the time of writing at least), but in technological terms that’s ancient history. Heck, in internet times it’s practically primordial! Craigslist’s the online equivalent of a fish growing legs!
It was a time when the Internet was installed from a CD that you got in the mail. And showing off a three-and-a-half-inch floppy was a genuine tech flex!
However, this online message board's influence extends far beyond creating the framework for today's apps; it serves as a quintessential example of online human behaviour. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly.
It’s time to learn how history works as we chronicle the rise of ‘Craigslist’ – the grandfather of message boards.

Masayoshi Son is the billionaire CEO of ‘SoftBank’, a technology investment firm with such a… unique… way of operating that it has reshaped business, not only in Japan but across the world.
Its portfolio includes over 80 companies, including the likes of Uber, NVIDIA and Boston Dynamics. [2]
Anytime ‘SoftBank’ appears on a start-ups board of investors, you know it’s going to be big one day, whether it really deserves it or not…
Today Masayoshi Son is unfortunately best known for the humiliating downfall of ‘WeWork’. Something that his critics say is proof that Masayoshi Son’s talent for spotting innovation is obsolete.
But the man behind one of the most influential investment funds in the world, worked his way up from the most humble of origins.
His family was dirt poor in a county that didn’t even recognize him as a citizen until he was a massively successful businessman.
You don’t go from a pig farmer living on the fringes of the law, to one of the world’s most influential billionaires without at least a few tricks that are worth learning something from.
He once raised $45B worth of investment in a single meeting. But is that skill so impressive when you blow it on risky investments like pizza-making robots and experimental kindergartens?
Masayoshi was only 16, yet was captivated by the wisdom inside. He was desperate to meet the genius author so he did everything he could to meet him. [6]
He must have called the guy’s assistants a hundred times. All he got was a firm no and a lengthy telephone bill.
So he changed plan.
The young buck flew into Tokyo to prove that he was serious about meeting him.
Finally, he got 15 whole minutes with the busy businessman, which ended up being one of the most defining moments in Masayoshi Son’s entire career.
He asked the McDonald’s master what business a young man like him should get into.
The answer? Don’t look to the past. Look to future industries. Look for the place where there is growth.
Go into computer technology.
So he did. It’s time to learn how history works as we track the rise and falls of ‘the life story of Masayoshi Son’.

Media moguls don’t tend to be as well known as A-List celebrities and world leaders, but
then again Rupert Murdoch isn’t your average billionaire news broadcasting tycoon.
They call him the modern day ‘Citizen Kane’ because his rise from small time local
newspaper to multinational conglomerate CEO has all the twists and turns of a classic rags-
to-riches story. kind of! Even his private life feels like an episode of ‘Succession’, what with sibling rivalries, high profile divorces and the occasional television appearances.
But Rupert Murdoch is a whole different beast to Orson Welles’s character in the classic
Hollywood tale of the newspaper industry.
Murdoch's influence on the size, shape and nature of media is as widespread as it is
devastating. Some good. Some bad. Some ugly.
Given that the Australian born media maverick is close to a century old, it seems fair to say
that his time at the top is coming to an end. But will his influence survive the rise of social
media and alternative journalism, or is his legacy as dead as legacy media?
It’s time to learn how history works as we examine the life of Rupert Murdoch.

Alfred Winslow Jones created the world’s first hedge fund and changed the financial landscape forever. [1]
Yet, he didn’t start out as an investment banker. In fact, he started out as a Marxist!
His studies in sociology and career in journalism helped him figure out a neat trick for finessing the market.
At the time, his novel idea flew under the radar.
But nowadays the hedge fund industry has between two and five trillion dollars in assets. [2]
That’s why some people curse Jones’s invention.
They say his idea only helps the elites while working folk pay the price for market crashes. They say lack of regulation means hedge funds are shady, and helped cause the global financial crisis.
However, finance fans will protect Alfred Winslow Jones with an ironclad defence: hate the game, not the player.
Alfred had unknowingly strengthened the muscles he’d need to lift up the world’s financial system.
But none of it would have happened without a chance encounter.
It’s time to understand how history works as we explain “the story of the first hedge fund”.
