Over the last 10 years we had an extended bull run and investors have been able to profit, but if we look at the past hundred years on average we had a bear market every 3 years. According to Shani Jayamanne, Senior Investment Specialist for the Individual Investor division of Morningstar Australia, over the long term the market goes up, but there is lots of volatility in between, so investors really have to look at their goals in terms of when they need to achieve them.
