The power of human connection and its ability to unlock our hidden potential was a central theme of discussion on LOA Today. Host Walt Thiessen welcomed life coach Joel Elston and podcaster Nikki LaCroce to explore the topic of connecting with others to achieve greater things.
Joel has found us another book from his reading list that gives us a good topic for discussion.
Not surprisingly, after Walt introduces the topic and our panelists, Nikki and Joel take over as they share experiences and perceptions associated with their own cases of ADHD.
And when you get two ADHD’s talking, it’s a job to get them to shift the topic!
Joel shared how a teacher in high school was able to draw out his hidden potential by challenging and rewarding his efforts. “She was able to pull out my hidden potential. An email wasn’t really hidden, I had hidden it, because the definitions that I was getting of how my brain work, which is something I just accepted that I’m lazy, I don’t care and I’m unmotivated.”
Nikki related this to her own experience with an ADHD diagnosis later in life, saying “I think it is really important to have those teachers, those parents, those role models in our lives who do step in and help us see that within ourselves.”
The power of human connection was also discussed at length. Nikki brought up statistics showing “a lack of social connection is effectively the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.”
Joel emphasized that “connection is my modality” as a life coach and therapist.
Walt summed it up by saying “isn’t that what exploration is? It’s looking at things over and over again, from a different angle.”
The group agreed that exploring ideas from different perspectives through connection with others is key to unlocking our potential.
