Wilkie Collins's gothic tale of redemptive love and treachery could not be better suited for an ensemble of narrators, with different characters picking up the story chronologically. Walter Hartright is employed to give drawing lessons to sisters Laura and Marian. He falls in love with Laura, but she's engaged to another. Glen McCready (Walter) and Rachel Bavidge (Marian) are standouts as the moral center of the story. Their characterizations of Laura's arrogant husband, the smooth but untrustworthy Italian Count Fosco, and the nervous Mr. Fairlie are both amusing and exactly right. Combining a convincing cast, gripping dialogue, and a fast-paced plot, this audiobook delivers a captivating experience from start to finish.

Fantastic ideas such as using cauliflowers as parachutes, theme parks for dissolute nobleman to indulge their rowdy behaviour, an automaton pickpocket that could be utilised by Her Majesties Government- the only disadvantage being it would soon wear out from overwork ! Redolent with the authors usual swipes at the establishment and his reforming zeal Volume 3 of the Sketches is a Dickensian treat.

James (1862-1936) was an English medieval scholar and provost of Kings College, Cambridge, and then Eton College. His ghost stories are beautifully crafted, ranging from the insidiously unsettling to the totally terrifying; his characters may catch the slightest movement out of the corner of their eye or hear, in the depths of the night, an indistinct rustling from a neighbouring bed. His professional interest in antiquarianism pervades many stories. He uses everyday contemporary settings like houses, omnibuses, hotels, golf courses, schools, and beaches, making the intrusion of the supernatural that much more unnerving.
