    Editorial Reviews:
"now, back we go through many loving years to hear The Case of Bardell versus Pickwick" None other than the lion of the British stage, Sir Laurence Olivier, pronounces those words at the start of this wonderful series of selections from Charles Dickens Pickwick Papers and A Tale of Two Cities. From radios golden age, Oliviers silky baritone leads an all-star cast, including Orson Welles and John Gielgud, performing in the high tragicomic style befitting classic characters such as Sgt. Buzzfuzz, Alfred Jingle, and Sydney Carton. Adding to the adventure is the presence of old-time orchestration, including rising strings and crashing cymbals. The remastered recording is almost perfect, and the listeners journey to another era most certainly is. Presented by Theatre Royal.

They encounter the Amahagger, a fierce tribe of cannibals who live in the caves of Kôr, a huge burial ground of an ancient civilisation decimated by plague.
The tribe are ruled over by She-who-must-be-obeyed [Ayesha], a mysterious and ruthless Queen who has the secret of eternal life while still possessing the beauty and radiance of a young woman. She has lived, virtually alone, for 2,000 years awaiting the return of her lover Kallicrates, whom she killed in a fit of jealous rage. When Ayesha sees Leo she believes him to be the reincarnation of the man who spurned her. A bewitching temptress, naively flirtatious but capable of horrific acts of malevolence, she will not be thwarted a second time. They will both bathe in the Eternal Flame before their marriage!
Not without sudden flashes of humour She is an intriguing story set in the Dark Continent with a mix of sex and the supernatural which thrilled the Victorians and still - one hundred years later - continues to enthral.

  • Agnes Grey Audiobook by Anne Brontë
Listen to this audiobook free with a 30-day trial. Go to http://audiobookspace.com/free
    Title: Agnes Grey
    Author: Anne Brontë
    Narrator: Rachel Bavidge
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-18-10
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
From its opening sentences Agnes Grey introduces a heroine who is honest, perceptive and charming. Unfortunately, the Bloomfields, who engage her as a governess, are rather less appealing, and the incarnation of the suppressed cruelties and hypocrisies of the Victorian age. When Agnes moves to a marginally less alarming family, one of her charges sets out to disrupt her only romantic hope. Critical, satirical, direct, and honest, Agnes Grey is a fine reflection of its author.
    Editorial Reviews:
Listeners wary of delving into the classics would be wise to begin with Rachel Bavidge's performance of this lesser-known Brontë work. Bavidge demonstrates an appealing liveliness as she recounts Agnes's experiences as a governess. With crisp, articulate dialogue and musical intonation, Bavidge depicts the challenging families Agnes serves. The production has a slightly echoing quality that lends it formality at first, but once the ear adjusts, the story takes center stage. The only distraction is Bavidge's performance of children's voices, which lean toward an exaggeratedly nasal tone, but the other characters sound realistic and distinctive. No Jane Eyre clone, this governess story has a voice all its own.
