It's not over, till it's over".

Members Reviews:

The best yet in this series

The storyline is engaging and moves with a good pace. At times it can be a little far fetched to be believable even for a crime thriller but the plot in general is well thought out and sound. Background is quite important so read the others in the series first but this is definitely the best so far.

Good story - poor structure

Great idea, great narration but for me there were to many jumps between characters and plots that were poorly signposted.

Taking Pity

It's a pity I ever started to listen to this. Why an author needs to describe barbaric torture in such graphic detail whilst using such foul Medieval English is beyond me. For those listeners who delight in expletives, depravity and detailed torture techniques then you are very welcome to listen. For those of us who enjoy a cleverly written constructive detective story written skilfully then look for a more intelligent author who does not have to resort to this type of boring dialogue. As for the narrator he suits the book, morose, monotonous and exceptionally boring.

This is the first time I have felt the need to write a bad review out of the hundreds of Audible books in my library. If I keep well away from this author it may well be the last. It really should carry a warning.

Thank goodness for Audible and the incredible choice on offer, but in future I shall steer well away from anything carrying this author's name.

It's a pity to give this any star ratings but I am bound by the requirements and give them very reluctantly. In defence of my review I did give it ample opportunity to interest me and listened till the twelfth chapter. That is having fast forwarded past the unlistenable parts, which I hasten to add covered a major percentage of the story.

Addictive listening

Excellent book, Im on my third book in the series, I didnt listen to the first book but soon will.

Brilliant

Loved it, brilliant as always. The whole series is brilliant. Great narration, story, characters not to be missed.

In this story, Mr. Hilton Cubitt of Ridling Thorpe Manor in Derbyshire visits Sherlock Holmes and gives him a piece of paper with a mysterious sequence of stick figures representing dancing men.

The little dancing men are at the heart of a mystery which seems to be driving his young wife Elsie Patrick to distraction. He married her about 3 years ago, and until recently, everything was well. She is American, and before the wedding, she asked her husband-to-be to promise her never to ask about her past, as she had had some âvery disagreeable associationsâ in her life, although she said that there was nothing that she was personally ashamed of. Mr. Cubitt swore the promise and, being an honorable English gentleman, insists on living by it, which is one of the things causing difficulty at Ridling Thorpe Manor.

The trouble began when Elsie received a letter from the United States, which evidently disturbed her, and she threw the letter on the fire. Then the dancing men appeared, sometimes on a piece of paper left on the sundial overnight, sometimes scrawled in chalk on a wall or door, even a windowsill. Each time, their appearance has an obvious, terrifying effect on Elsie, but she will not tell her husband what is going on. Holmes tells Cubitt that he wants to see every occurrence of the dancing men. They are to be copied down and brought or sent to him at 221B Baker Street. Cubitt duly does this, and it provides Holmes with an important clue. Holmes comes to realize that it is a substitution cipher. He cracks the code by frequency analysis. The last of the messages conveyed by the dancing men is a particularly alarming one.

Holmes rushes down to Ridling Thorpe Manor only to find Cubitt dead of a bullet to the heart and his wife gravely wounded in the head. Inspector Martin of the Norfolk Constabulary believes that it is a murder-suicide, or will be if Elsie dies. She is the prime suspect in her husbandâs death. Holmes sees things differently. Why is there a bullet hole in the windowsill, making a total of three shots, while Cubitt and his wife were each only shot once? Why are only two chambers in Cubittâs revolver empty? What is the large sum of money doing in the room? The discovery of a trampled flowerbed just outside the window and the discovery of a shell casing therein confirm what Holmes has suspected: a third person was involved, and it is surely the one who has been sending the curious dancing-man messages.

Holmes knows certain things that Inspector Martin does not. He seemingly picks the name âElrigeâsâ out of the air, and Cubittâs stable boy recognizes it as a local farmerâs name.

Publisher's Summary:

A chilling high-concept thriller from number-one best-selling author and award-winning journalist Jonathan Freedland. Perfect for fans of Robert Harris.

She can't save her sister. Journalist Madison Webb is obsessed with exposing lies and corruption. But she never thought she would be investigating her own sister's murder.

She can't trust the police. Madison refuses to accept the official line that Abigail's death was an isolated crime. She uncovers evidence that suggests that Abi was the third victim in a series of killings that's been hushed up as part of a major conspiracy.

She can expose the truth. In a United States that has yielded to the People's Republic of China, corruption is rife - the government dictates what the "truth" is. With her life on the line, Madison must give up the story or face the consequences....

"Nobody does the high-IQ, high-octane thriller better than Jonathan Freedland." (Tony Parsons)

"Boldly imaginativea magnetic heroine in a heart-racing story." (A D Miller, author of Snowdrops)

"Shifting his focus from hi-tech present day conspiracies to a very dark chapter of the second world war, he has proved he can more than rub shoulders with the likes of John Le Carré and Robert Harris." (Mirror)

"Pantheon is a propulsive, satisfying novel which burns with moral indignation, earning the author his place at the thriller-writers' high table." (Guardian)

California dreamin' with China on my mind

Our heroine Madison Webb is an award winning LA Times reporter, she exists in a near future where China controls parts of America the indebted giant. A place where crime, politics and power cross every line in society and suddenly touch her life, her family in irreparable ways.

A modern who done it, that delivers thrills, and twists of plot to the very end. With an interesting background, and believable characters that inhabit a possible world that would disturb the american sense of patriotism.

A good Summer read that entertains, and poses a few questions about our changing world.

Expertly narrated by Jennifer Woodward, with the best voice Characterization by a female reader I have heard in an audiobook.
