New York City, 1992. For Holly, it's the summer when the city she's lived in all her life changes past recognition. And the funerals are about to begin.
"Let's get this out of the way," she says. "I'm a white woman who likes black men." That includes her lover, Samps. Once a young artist of promise, he's now homeless, living in a Harlem squat, and maybe, Holly fears, clinically insane.
But that doesn't explain why she's caught up in a web that connects Jewish, Italian, and black organized crime. Or what any of this has to do with the midtown law firm where she temps, a missing Haitian girl, and a world-famous Japanese monkey.
Her friends are getting shot. She and Samps can try to save themselves - or do what they can to stop the killing.

Terrific novel about how we live now
"Nobody Wakes Up" pretty is terrific novel about how gentrification of an city neighborhood, in this case Manhatten's upper Westside, affects it's long time multiracial neighbors. The gentrification by the well-to-do of neighborhoods in city after city has never been so tell told about in a novel, so this novel is really about how we live now as our cities like our nation instead of being a mixture of classes in the neighborhoods where many felt at home in are recolonized by the well-to-do as the working class are pushed out of places they have lived for decades. The story has lively characters in a thriller format. Terrific fiction.
I couldn't put it down
I started Nobody Wakes Up Pretty last night and finished it this morning. There's not an extraneous word in the book. I couldn't put it down. It's real. It's funny. It's touching. It matters. And unforgettable characters:
--From the main character Holly: "Just drew my pay in one world, my breath in the other."
--From Junie: "I do one thing at a time," he said. "If I'm eating, I don't drink. If I'm drinking, I don't eat."
Everything you want in a book.
Haunting Story, Haunting Prose
An amazing story with characters so real that I miss them now that I have finished the book. Diane Lefer's prose is absolutely haunting - I found myself repeating lines from the book as I went through my day. This novel speaks the truth, even when it is not pretty. I highly recommend it.
Nobody Wakes Up Pretty
Nobody in this book wakes up pretty. It's a gritty and eccentric(but believable) multi-layered portrait of its character's lives amid a world of crime and intrigue. Above all, it's a well-told story, and a commendable introduction to the work of Diane Lefer.
