Third time reading , 1st time audio
I couldn't fault this audio at all , the reading was so so good and enjoyable
Also the actors where brilliant and believable.
The story itself has to be one of the best thriller novels I've read as of yet with a twist and turn at every point !!
    Creepy and unsettling.
Having read most of Mo Hayder's books and been a fan, this is the first one I have listened to. Although not her best, it is creepy and unsettling. At times the pace and tension made my heart race. She is brilliant at creating scenarios that border into horror and tap into our darkest fears.
Being a scouser I enjoyed the narrator, but the singsong element to our accent did jar at times against the horrors he was describing.
Would recommend, but as usual with Hayder, not for the faint hearted!
Spooky book becomes comical due to upbeat narrator
This was my first Mo Hayder book and when I read it the odd 10 years ago, I remember it created such a wonderfully creepy feeling of unease. Not many books do that, and I've always looked forward to re-reading it again.
When I found it as an audio book the time was right for some late evening walks in the forest.
BUT, oh no, the chills are not to be! The narrator completely misunderstands the book! He reads it with a jolly lilt to his voice, which utterly and completely removes any form of malice or threat generated by the story. Now I'm halfway through the book and i might have to use my right to return it. A big shame on such a yummy book.
With the correct narrator this wouldbe a superb horror package.
    karen
Bloody brilliant. I didn't see the final evil twist coming until the last 10 minutes of the book. Deffinately a must read book.

Title: The Perfect Crime: The Big Bow Mystery
    Author: Israel Zangwill
    Narrator: Colin Mace
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The first in a new series of classic detective stories from the vaults of HarperCollins is the world's first locked-room mystery, a seemingly impossible crime story as powerful as any that has copied the scenario since.
The Detective Story Club, launched by Collins in 1929, was a clearinghouse for the best and most ingenious crime stories of the age, chosen by a select committee of experts. Now, almost 90 years later, these books are the classics of the Golden Age, republished at last with the same popular cover designs that appealed to their original readers.
Originally published as The Big Bow Mystery in 1891 and republished by the Detective Club to coincide with a new film version called The Perfect Crime, Israel Zangwill's novel invented the concept of the locked room mystery' and influenced almost every crime writer thereafter.
A man is murdered for no apparent reason. He has no enemies, and there seems to be no motive for anyone murdering him. No clues remain, and the instrument with which the murder was committed cannot be traced. The door of the room in which the body was discovered was locked and bolted on the inside, both windows were latched, and there was no trace of any intruder.
The greatest detectives in the land are puzzled. Here indeed is the perfect crime, the work of a master mind.
Can you solve the problem which baffled Scotland Yard for so long, until at last the missing link in the chain of evidence was revealed?
This new edition includes a brand-new introduction by the Golden Age crime expert Dr. John Curran, author of Agatha Christie's Secret Notebooks.
    Critic Reviews:
"Attractively bound in black and gold, with vivid coloured jackets, these books are bound to be immensely popular." (Daily Mirror)

Classic "locked room" mystery with a surprising ending
A "locked room" murder mystery from 1895. Often rated as one of the five or ten best of the genre, written by an author who is all but forgotten today. Basically a novella, as a bit long for a short story, yet too short for a novel. The author develops each character a bit more than is really necessary by modern standards, but the overall story is well plotted, believable, and the "why" as well as the "who" and "how" should surprise most readers. I received this free from Amazon for my kindle, but the story is well enough constructed that it would have been worth paying for.
    Good story
I saw the film The Verdict and wanted to read the book on which it is based. There are some major character differences and the reason for the crime is vastly different. It was an engaging read and I enjoyed finding the elements portrayed in the film.
    Three Stars
    INTERESTING MYSTERY BOOK
    Pretty terrible
I did not enjoy this. The book went on a great deal about nothing, or should I say no a lot about the actual investigations I found it tedious reading and the ending rather from nowhere . It is a book pretty typical for its time but not one of the better ones.
    Humorous locked room mystery
I raise an eyebrow at the ending, but the author's preface explains why he went with it.
A young man is murdered in a locked room seemingly without motive.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The first in a new series of classic detective stories from the vaults of HarperCollins involves a blind man who stumbles across a murder. As he has not seen anything, the assassins let him go, but he finds it is impossible to walk away from murder.
The Detective Story Club, launched by Collins in 1929, was a clearing house for the best and most ingenious crime stories of the age, chosen by a select committee of experts. Now, almost 90 years later, these books are the classics of the Golden Age, republished at last with the same popular cover designs that appealed to their original readers.
By the purest of accidents the man who is blind accidentally comes on the scene of a murder. He cannot see what is happening but he can hear. He is seen by the assassins who, on discovering him to be blind, allow him to go without harming him. Soon afterwards he recovers his sight and later falls in love with a mysterious woman who is in some way involved in the crime.... The mystery deepens and only after a series of memorable thrills is the tangled skein unravelled.
Called Back by Hugh Conway, a pseudonym for Frederick John Fargus, was first published in 1883. It was a huge success, selling 350,000 copies in its first year, leading to a highly acclaimed stage play the following year.
    Members Reviews:
A Victorian thriller steeped in violence & romance
Emily Dickinson was moved by this novel. It was so popular on its day (1883), that its fame rivaled the sensational best sellers of Wilkie Collins. Today it might be forgotten without this beautifully produced reprint from Collins Crime Club. I loved the book, in spite of (or because of) its excessive melodrama and extreme romanticism.
The hero, Gilbert Vaughan, is young, rich, good-hearted, and healthy except for vision problems. He loses his sight and regains it in three emotion-charged chapters. But during his early misery and blindness, he stumbles into a crime scene. Only his blindness saves him from being murdered too.
Coincidence drives the sensational plot. Gilbert's connection with the brutal murder that he could hear but not see is destined to continue. He encounters the young singer who was also present and falls hopelessly in love with her. His intense love for this mysterious beauty impels him to travel far and wide to find out the truth about the murder.
The Victorian view of illness, love affairs, exotic travel, and political fanaticism fascinates me. These plot elements are particularly intense in Called Back. If you have a weakness for Victorian sensation novels, as I do, you won't want you miss this one.
The short but informative introduction gives insight into the author's life and work. Hugh Conway (his pen name) died young, at age thirty-seven. Had he lived, he might have achieved lasting fame. I look forward to the coming reprint, also from Collins Crime Club, of Hugh Conway's Dark Days -- originally published a year after Called Back.

Title: The Mayfair Mystery: 2835 Mayfair

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The first in a new series of classic detective stories from the vaults of HarperCollins involves a disappearing corpse, a supernatural theory, and a genuinely shocking finale.
This most entertaining detective story is concerned with an amazing crime. The body of a wealthy man is discovered by his valet. The valet hurried to a friend of the dead man to tell him of the tragedy. They return to find the body gone! The motive of the murder becomes a deeper mystery still, and no clue seems to lead anywhere. Little by little, however, evidence is built up round a theory, and clever detective work triumphs in the end. For ingenuity and dramatic situations The Mayfair Mystery is hard to beat.
First published in 1907 as 2835 Mayfair, the book had caught the imagination of the reading public for its thrilling twists, its wit and imagination, and was chosen to be one of the first 12 classic books released by the Club.
    Critic Reviews:
"Attractively bound in black and gold, with vivid coloured jackets, these books are bound to be immensely popular." (Daily Mirror)

Is there even a detective in this book???
I had been finding it incredibly difficult to get into this book, and thought that it was me... I rewound sections to play again to be sure I hadnt just skipped them or passed out, gone to Mars, or been abducted by aliens, but...
I have just read another review on Audible UkK and one on Amazon US, and now I understand that actually there does not seem to be much plot, content or even detective mystery.
I might persevere with this and I might try another in the series... but its not looking good so far.
    Dreadful, dreadful book
What would have made The Mayfair Mystery: 2835 Mayfair (The Detective Club) better?
It's not a detective story, nothing really happens at all. There's maybe a short story's worth of plot at most, spread out amongst dull anecdotes told by an odd set of characters who aren't at all likable. And while the 'twist' is possibly of interest to gender theorists, any normal reader will spot coming so far in advance, they might see it before starting the book. I'm returning it.
What about Steven Crossleys performance did you like?
He's a really good reader, doing the best he can with a dull, dull book
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Mayfair Mystery: 2835 Mayfair (The Detective Club)?
Most of the book. It's a short story, at most. There's a out 2000 words of actual plot and the rest is just waffle. And there's not even all that much character development to make up for it.

Crime under the Northern Light in Sami Land
This story brings you inside the real live north of the Arctic Circle. Become familiar with
the culture of Reindeer herders that belong to the Sami people, the only indigenous people
of Europe. Listen to their stories and feel the snow on the pages of this great book.
Since I have been living close to Sami and have many friends in their community I
can witness that this book is authentic and much more reality than fiction. A
Crime story that is not be found anywhere else
I heard rumours that the next book is already in work to be published in autumn 2015.
    Really looking forward to it.
