Possibly Turnbull's best.

Peter Turnbull's Hennessey and Yellich series is my latest discovery and I am happily devouring all of his books I can find.

Rarely available in the USA but popular in Britain, he never fails to tell a good tale of murder, mischief and mayhem while

also describing the personal lives of the two likeable Yorkshire detectives. York itself, the setting for all his books, is almost

a major character - it certainly makes you want to travel to that delightful historic city in the north of England.

"Delliver Us From Evil" is the 20th book in the series which can be read in any order, although it is interesting to see the

characters develop. This one starts with the discovery of a woman sitting on a bench in the wintertime - frozen dead where she

sat. But she is not quite the person she appears to be. The plot, the weather and the list of suspects thickens.

What an ending!

The twists and turns in this mystery will keep you enthralled to the end. Through out this book you will constantly be surprised and saying to yourself "I never saw that coming" A really good read even though the subject matter is quite "cold" and a romance as well.

As most of his books, Turnbull has written an excellent book with no unnecessary words. Fast, clean reading.

Weak ending.

Fairly entertaining yarn about the death of a woman who is found frozen to death in rural York, England. The detectives of the York constabulary trace the potential murder suspects back to the victim's home in Ontario, Canada. Clever characterizations of the detective team and observations on Canada from a British viewpoint are the novel's strong points. However, an extremely disappointing ending in which the murderer is revealed in two paragraphs made me glad I got this from my public library and had not wasted my money purchasing it. All in all, say a 4 out of 10 rating.

Story OK

I usually like Meg Gardiner books and the main character, Jo Beckett. However, whether it is the narrating or this particular book, I ended up actively disliking her. She is constantly whining and appears full of her own importance. I have never noticed this before and assume, therefore, it is the narrating. The story is fine, but nothing I have not heard before from other authors.

It makes you realise what a skillful narrator can do and how talented some are.

The singing will drive you barmy!

What made the experience of listening to The Liar's Lullaby the most enjoyable?

I have listened to a few audio books by the same author and narrator. The story was gripping and kept me wanting more. The narrator does the different characters in the book well.

Have you listened to any of Tara Wards other performances? How does this one compare?

I have also listened to the dirty secrets club and the memory collector both of which were also enjoyable. I do feel that the story in the liars lullaby was more gripping.

All in all a very enjoyable listen.

Fast paced and well read, if a little breathlessly

I enjoyed this, as I have its two predecessors, all three read by the same narrator. She reads fast, and uses various accents to help identify her characters, and on one occasion that I recall I struggled to understand what was being said - but this was pretty near the beginning, so my "ear" hadn't tuned in yet. She reads her men slower than the women, especially her neighbour, who was less of a comic add on this time and more realistic, and her reading of the Chinese Amy Tang was brilliant.

The story has some daft elements, but hey, this is fiction, and forensic psychiatrists don't really fight crime! I didn't spot the baddy coming, the sub story over Gabe's deployment was well handled, as was the battle against nameless authority.

I will continue to look out for Ms Gardiner's books - they work fine as easy-to-read and engrossing whodunnits.

Highly recommend this author's series to Psyshological thriller fans.

I'll start with the book itself: the story was great. Little girls are being kidnapped and you follow not only the main character's search to understand the depraved minds that would seek out such innocent souls, but you sometimes see through the eyes of the frightened children and often through the eyes of the no-nonsense and enigmatic former cop that Carson Ryder is partnered with in this book. Ryder, as always, wants to save the girls; the partner, Conner Sandhill, wants to make sure that justice is served and as he develops throughout the story, you learn that he cares greatly about the girls as well. I agree with one reviewer that he sort of stole the show in this book. I loved his character. Another reviewer points out that although the topic is a touchy one: pedophilia, and in this case, involving only black girls, the storyline handles this part of the telling with delicacy. Nothing is graphic, and while you sometimes feel the fear and pain and confusion of the innocent souls, not once do you feel uncomfortable or dirty. I think 100th Man and Death Collectors are better, but this one is on up there with some of his best.

Absolutely LOVE this guy's writing! His psychological thrillers are 'can't put down' reads that I have enjoyed immensely. It helps my interest that I was raised in Alabama so I know the Mobile area and get a lot of the more quaint references in the book. It also makes it even more fun that I am now a resident of Florida, and the main character moved there in the book "The Murder Box."

The characters are all well-developed and the plot lines are always intriguing. Some people might be slightly put off by the author's habit of giving you some first person narrative by Carson Ryder (main character-how can you not love that name?!) and then following up with third person views by other characters in the book, but I like seeing the story from multiple perspectives and it flows in a way that, to me, does not interrupt the flow of storyline.

Quirky Characters and Scary Premise

When children are suddenly snatched out of their homes or from the streets with no clues about their whereabouts, people begin to panic. Compounding the problem is the perception that black missing children don't get as much attention as white missing children. Carson Ryder is thrown into this mix to help solve the crime without the help of Harry, who has been injured and is in the hospital. The two mysteries of missing children and Harry's attack both feature in this tale.

I Love This Series

This series is so great, to me it is an overlooked gem of a series by a wonderful author. I happened to find one at a library book sale and was hooked. The books have never been reprinted and so I am gathering them all slowly on amazon, although not all are still available. I like the earlier ones best, but the characters are well done and good info on Mallorca the way it was and how it changed. I would love to read one of these mysteries while traveling in Mallorca!

Charming mysteries

It is always a pleasure to settle in with an Inspector Alvarez story. I have read many in this series and so know the Inspector and his family well. These are slow paced stories

that entertain in a quiet and comfortable way. The stories contain well drawn characters

and interesting crimes, not necessarily violent. It is always nice to escape to this charming Spanish island with the Inspector.

Not up to par

The Inspector Alvarez series was once a great favorite of mine, but this novel falls short of what I expected. The characters have gone stale and predictable; the plot seems formulaic, lacking in imagination or originality; and there's a lots extraneous padding in the writing.

She,s back again and right in the thick of things. She is a 21st century grown up Nancy Drew but with everyday problems and pressures we all can relate to.I want to see and read more about her world of mystery and crime solving!

The Best Monona Quinn Yet!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Monona Quinn Mysteries but Marshall Cook has surely saved the very best for last with "Obsessions". The characters are exquisitely drawn, each one pulling you into his or her life so that you really do care how the course of events reveal themselves and the impact on each one of them. The small town life is depicted so accurately that I'm quite sure I've visited this town before. In fact, I think I may have relatives living there. Mo and Doug are so endearing. I'm ready to invite them over to my house for dinner, except, of course, that I'd run the risk of Mo finding yet another dead body. This book is the perfect read for your next extended airplane ride, a few days in the mountains, or an escape to the lounge chair on your back deck. Can't wait for the next installment in the Monona Quinn series.

Was this an exercise for a writers' workshop?

Set at a writers' workshop, this book feels like an exercise for the Writing a Mystery class. Except for the heroine, each character has a single defining characteristic, so the reader can remember who is who. To counterbalance the hackneyed setting, the descriptions employ offbeat verbs and adjectives. The persons involved are introduced serially, in isolation, clearly awaiting the Plot, when their individual stories will coalesce. Several characters, however, never do get integrated into the story; the back stories on some are unnecessarily lurid and on others are one-dimensional. A false trail is laid, and then abandoned, while the actual denouement arrives without sufficient groundwork to make it plausible. And why is the whole thing written in the present tense?

Murder in the North Woods

This book is an easy-to-read account of a murder mystery that takes place at a creative writing workshop in northern Wisconsin. The characters are well developed and the small town location is described to a "T". The author's sense of humor is evident throughout the book - very enjoyable!

Enter Father Grace

Detective Superintedent Roy Grace is tired, exhausted as is his soon to be wife, Chole. They have a new seven week old son, Noah. As all parents know, the first year in a child's life is one of little sleep for the parents. Grace is worried that this lack of sleep will interfere with his job. One of his colleagues keeps interjecting his thoughts about how love leaves after a child enters the picture. What worries the new father has, as if he does't have enough troubles with a new murder to solve.

The victim, Aileen McWhirter, 92, is tortured to obtain the details of the combination of her safe as well as her bank account details. The thieves steal more than antiques, it turns out a valuables Patek Phillipe watch, a family heirloom has gone missing. Gavin Daly, Aileen's brother, is a very rich man who made his money via antiques. His son, Lucas it seems is a drug addict, and he and his father do not get on well. However, Daly and his son are determined to get the watch back, never mind the rest of the antiques. And,they work against the police which sets Grace's nerves on edge.

The mystery of the watch is a terrific plot, and the writing is solid and entertaining. There are several interesting twists and turns. And, of course, Sandy, the former lost wife, turns up while seeing a therapist in Germany. This part of the series has become so dull that I have come to dislike Sandy. She is not interesting nor a part of he plot that I want.

One of Grace's former prisoners, who hates Grace with a passion, is out on parole, and he is set to enact revenge. This part of the storyline is a litte off base, but brings some interest. Grace's travel to New York City is a part of the book that could have been deleted. Like Officer Cobb, I don't understand why Grace feels the need to be there.

One of Grace's colleagues is always eating Red Maltesers, and I finally googled to find out what they are:

Choose a different book.

In a nutshell: narrator poor, plot frustrating, action good. I found this book a struggle to get through as i listened to it immediately after La Carre's -The Honourable Schoolboy- The contrast was too much.

The painfully clunky prose isnt helped by a narrator who doesnt know where to pause, and where NOT to pause when reading in English.

The first 3rd of the book is pointless character development but when the action starts, things become less tedious. Sorry to say this is the only book I regret downloading through Audible.

It was OK but a slow read. I had a hard time following the story. Maybe it was because I kept putting it down.

Excellent on all counts.

This book is very gripping and the community of Questors surrounding the hunt for the $25,000 makes it even more exciting. You do not need to be a local to Vegas (or need to have ever even been there) to solve the location of the hidden dagger. I am truly hoping this book gives me the excuse I need to buy a ticket to Sin City for a little treasure hunting.

If you like mysteries and Vegas (who doesn't?) then you need to read this book. The author, Stephen Grogan, is a former crime-scene reporter and brings to life the attention to detail that investigators have. This fantastic story is riddled with sub-plots, puzzles, and mysteries within the mystery.

A sequel is in the works and I am already looking forward to it.

Fans of Hard Case Crime should love this!

Sometimes, a local thrift store I go too, clears up bookshelf space by dividng up their books by genre and placing about 10 or so in a bag and selling them a dollar a bag. This book was pulled from one such Crime/Mystery novel dollar grab bag purchase.

Finished it in a day and a half. Kept me entertained! As noted in my title, If you love the HCC novels, you should check this one out!

Best value for your money!

I finished Vegas Die about a month ago but I've become involved in trying to find the hidden "dagger". What a blast. This is the most fun I've ever had with a book. In fact it's taking up a lot of time but with a possible reward of 25,000.00 to whoever finds the dagger, it's well worth it. I've also attended a meeting of fellow "Questors" who are also searching for the dagger. No need to live in Las Vegas as a guess within 15 ft. will be close enough. Buy this book and join the treasure hunt. You won't regret it.

The book is rated by me as PG (Parental Guidance 16 or over I'd say in one chapter.)

Mystery lovers rejoice!

"Vegas Die" is a truly entertaining must read. Grogan has taken the crime novel genre & given it an innovative new spin: finding the notorious $25,000 dagger hidden somewhere in Vegas. Brilliant! Everyone's always looking for an excuse to come to Vegas; now there's even more reason to: buy the book & come search for this valuable dagger . . . Can't wait for Stephen's next book.

This is typically great J.A Kerley read. A lot of "edge of your seat" gripping suspension. A true must read

Mysterious & Unexpected

This is another of the Carson Ryder series. I wouldn't read this without having read his other books first, though, because that would help to develop the relationship for the reader with the characters. As with other Carson Ryder books, this one involves a mystery to solve. Carson ends up entrenched in fighting off white supremacists and uncovering a secret that a famous family is desperate to keep hidden. While it might border on the implausible from time to time, the author develops Carson Ryder's character more fully and one sees his growth into a more mature human being in this story. That said, if this book were skipped in the series, the reader could still keep up with the story without losing much.

Stellar read

Carson Ryder and Harry Nautilis are great characters. I love the humor and wit that comes from this duo, which is coupled with their dedication to solving crimes.
