Chantalene Morrell suffers from terrible nightmares from when she was a child, visions of a dark barn in a wind-swept moonlit field. Her mother is inside, screaming; her father is hanging from the rafters for a crime he didn't commit. She hides in the field, watching as four hooded figures emerge; she knows who they are. Returning to her hometown of Tetumka in rural Oklahoma, Chantalene vows to learn the identity of her father's killers. One man claims to have answers for her, but when she finds him slain on the floor of his butcher shop, Chantalene realizes the dangers she faces in discovering the truth. As Chantalene relentlessly searches for more clues, Tetumka's quiet citizens grow increasingly hostile. Her foster parents advise her to let the past lie. With the help of Drew Sandler, a local boy back home from the big city, Chantalene uncovers the dark secrets of both her hometown and her own mind, bringing her closer to the faces behind the shadows that haunt her dreams.

Members Reviews:
Smooth reading; exciting tale! Terrific!
If I hadn't read good reviews of this book and just looked at the cover, I'd have passed it right by; I can't really say why! But this was a surprisingly well-written and intriguing book. This is my first book by M.K. Preston and I'll now try another!
Suspense, Surprise, Satisfaction
This little mystery perfectly captures rural life and thinking, the effect of trauma on a child, and the strange ways those we know best can surprise us. A very satisfying read that will take you out of your world for a few hours.
Depressing!
In fairness, I was unable to get past page 30 or so, I found it so depressing.
"A hard life and a hard death" - Murder in Rural Oklahoma!
12 year-old Chantalene Morrell is tucked up in bed when she overhears a strange commotion in the front room. She sneaks a peek out her bedroom door, and sees her Mamma, LaVita, an overcoat pulled over her nightgown, slip out of the house with a hunting knife. Chantalene follows in silence, through the fields to the neighbor's isolated hay barn. Something is wrong, terribly wrong, and she knows enough to hide in the grass in terror as her mother scales the side of the barn to enter the hayloft. Then there's screaming and Gypsy cursing from inside the barn, and four hooded figures exit in a hurry.
This is just part of the riveting Prologue, and my synopsis does not do it justice. Chantalene's father has been lynched, after being acquitted of rape because he had witnesses he was in another town. The terrified LaVita leaves her daughter with neighbors before disappearing.
Move to 12 years later. Chantalene ran away from Tetumka, Oklahoma, but couldn't escape the nightmares. Now, she's come back to the decrepit family farm. The Sheriff sent her a letter explaining that a stranger arrested for other crimes has admitted to the rape. Chantalene wants retribution for her father's murder and answers about what happened to her mother.
This searching is bound to be unwelcome, even by those who didn't do the lynching. This is 2002, and time has not been kind to tiny rural Oklahoma outposts and family farms. In no place can you be more looked after than an insular isolated community. And in no place can you be more alone.
Of course, Chantalene is carrying a lot of rage and attitude.
