    Title: Seating Arrangements
    Author: Maggie Shipstead

Length: 12 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-12-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 188 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Maggie Shipstead's stunning debut novel, Seating Arrangements is an irresistible social satire that is also an unforgettable meditation on the persistence of hope, the yearning for connection, and the promise of enduring love.
Winn Van Meter is heading for his family's retreat on the pristine New England island of Waskeke. Normally a haven of calm, for the next three days this sanctuary will be overrun by tipsy revelers as Winn prepares for the marriage of his daughter Daphne to the affable young scion Greyson Duff. Winn's wife, Biddy, has planned the wedding with military precision, but arrangements are sideswept by a storm of salacious misbehavior and intractable lust: Daphne's sister, Livia, who has recently had her heart broken by Teddy Fenn, the son of her father's oldest rival, is an eager target for the seductive wiles of Greyson's best man; Winn, instead of reveling in his patriarchal duties, is tormented by his long-standing crush on Daphne's beguiling bridesmaid Agatha; and the bride and groom find themselves presiding over a spectacle of misplaced desire, marital infidelity, and monumental loss of faith in the rituals of American life.
Hilarious, keenly intelligent, and commandingly well written, Shipstead's deceptively frothy first novel is a piercing rumination on desire, love and its obligations, and the dangers of leading an inauthentic life, heralding the debut of an exciting new literary voice.
    Critic Reviews:
"Maggie Shipstead is an outrageously gifted writer, and her assured first novel, Seating Arrangements, is by turns hilarious and deeply moving." (Richard Russo, author of That Old Cape Magic )
"Seating Arrangements is bursting with perfectly observed characters and unforgettable scenes. This gorgeous, wise, funny, sprawling novel about family, fidelity, and social class, is the best book I've read in ages." (Courtney Sullivan, author of Maine)
"A pitch-perfect debut from a master storyteller, Seating Arrangements is a rich and deep work: a smart, consuming novel that manages also to be delightfully funny. A romp of a book, with whales and weddings and wealth, it is, at its heart, a warning against the empty seductions of status and exclusivity." (Justin Torres, author of We the Animals)

    Deadly dull
Would you try another book from Maggie Shipstead and/or Arthur Morey?
I am so bored by this book, the reading, and the plot that I will avoid anything from the author and the reader. This is a huge waste of time. If my book club wasn't reviewing the book, I'd stop in the middle and abandon it.
Has Seating Arrangements turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not the genre--this is the fault of the author
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was probably well suited for such an unlikeable, monotonous story
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Boredom
    Resist, Not Worth the Credit
Boring, boring, boring. Who listens to this stuff and likes it? I think I get over zealous on the sales, though I always read reviews, because this is the third book purchased on the last 6 months that was simply terrible.
I can't give you a redeeming value because the book had none.

    Redemption and forgiveness well written.
    Any additional comments?
First BD novel I have read, good story line, some nice surprises. I enjoyed how she developed the characters, showed a understanding of the complexity of families and how the past can repeat itself in next generations.
good story, not so the vocal
story was great - voice was unconvincing in the attempt to portray the various male parts. often very annoying!
    Good message
I think this may have been an older book. I was so appauled at the beginning I had to restart this book several times. The victim in this book, well, I just felt so sorry for her. I think this story has a vital message about the press. Also, I thought the book became very slow toward the ending. It was worth the credit.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From the New York Times best-selling author of Jemima J, and The Beach House, comes Jane Greens most emotional and powerful novel yet: a story that explores the complications of a woman marrying into a ready-made family, and the true meaning of motherhood.
Andi has spent much of her adult life looking for the perfect man, and at 37, she's finally found him.
Ethan - divorced with two daughters, Emily and Sophia - is a devoted father and even better husband.
Always hoping one day she would be a mother, Andi embraces the girls like they were her own. But in Emilys eyes, Andi is an obstacle to her fathers love, and Emily will do whatever it takes to break her down. When the dynamics between the two escalate, they threaten everything Andi believes about love, family, and motherhood - leaving both women standing at a crossroad in their lives and in their hearts.
Another Piece of My Heart is a novel that illuminates the nuances and truths about relationships and is Jane Green at her absolute best.
    Members Reviews:
    My opinion
A writer..in my opinion...should NEVER narrate their own book. They OVER due the reading. Their emotions over their writing and the story are too high and it over exaggerates the way they narrate.
Strong story, but needs a different narrator
What made the experience of listening to Another Piece of My Heart the most enjoyable?
The story was very good: it was Jane Green at her best -- creating complex, memorable characters in real life situations.
What other book might you compare Another Piece of My Heart to and why?
It took more turns than Promises to Keep, but it was similar to some of Green's earlier novels.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jane Green?
At first, I was thrilled to have Jane Green narrating her own book -- but it turned out to be a bit of a disservice to the strength of the story. The characters are American, so Jane's British accent was distracting. Also, one of the great strengths of professional narrators is their ability to change their voices slightly -- even via inflection or speed -- for different characters. This isn't a skill Green has, so I was often confused about who was speaking if i missed a word or a sentence.
    Any additional comments?
It's a compelling story that loses a bit in the narration, but fans of Jane Green's work will enjoy it.
    Great Story but....
What did you like best about Another Piece of My Heart? What did you like least?
The narration of the book was just not good. It was so hard to believe that these characters were from California when Jane Green was reading with such a strong accent. It drove me crazy throughout the book. I loved the story but couldn't wait for it to be over because of the accent just did not fit the characters.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I did not like the performance at all. Jane Green's accent made it very difficult to believe. If the book had a setting in London, it would have been fine. It didn't. These characters were all from the US. They should have had American accents.
    Please Use a Professional Narrator
I've enjoyed Jane Green's books in the past, but if she continues narrating, I might choose the print version instead.I almost didn't continue with this book after I started listening to it, but I wanted to find out what happened in the story.

    Title: The Language of Flowers
    Author: Vanessa Diffenbaugh
    Narrator: Tara Sands
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-12
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Victorian language of flowers was used to express emotions: honeysuckle for devotion, azaleas for passion, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it has been more useful in communicating feelings like grief, mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen, Victoria has nowhere to go, and sleeps in a public park, where she plants a small garden of her own. When her talent is discovered by a local florist, she discovers her gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But it takes meeting a mysterious vendor at the flower market for her to realise what's been missing in her own life, and as she starts to fall for him, she's forced to confront a painful secret from her past, and decide whether its worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness. The Language of Flowers is a heartbreaking and redemptive novel about the meaning of flowers, the meaning of family, and the meaning of love.
    Critic Reviews:
"A moving and beautifully written portrayal of the frailty - and the hardiness - of the human spirit." (Sunday Telegraph)
"It has the right ingredients a quirky plot device (the Victorian notion that flowers represent emotions), troubled heroine, hidden back-story, childhood trauma. It is entertaining, and, at times, quite addictive. These are all marvellous things for a debut (or any novel for that matter)." (Sunday Times Culture)

    Heart-rendingly wonderful.
Loved it - I now have a new found love of flowers. Great narration, just the right tone of voice.
    A beautiful story
A beautiful story very well narrated. If you have an interest in flowers then it's especially good!
    A break from the norm.
This book was recommended to me as I asked for a change of genre. I really enjoyed the story and the ideas within the book. The protagonist is likeable and the story moves at a good pace. There is a very tense act within the story too which all adds up to a great listen.
    Beautiful story, wonderfully read
I bought this after the recommendation of a friend and wasn't disappointed. The story is just beautiful, filled with poignant moments, sadness, self destruction and ultimately happiness and love. I thoroughly enjoyed the audibke recommendation to, which added real emotion to the story. Just lovely.
Interesting theme but difficult to listen to
The book was quite an easy read but elements of the story were unconvincing - for example her spell in hospital where no-one questioned her circumstances. I did not warm to her character and so did not really care what happened to her, despite having sympathy for her awful past. The most annoying thing was the American accent of the reader who pronounced things differently to me (especially many of the flowers) which grated after a while.

Divorced, alone, and unexpectedly unemployed, Sylvia Landsman flees to Italy, where she meets Henry, a wistful, married, middle-aged expatriate. Taking off on a grand tour of Europe bankrolled with his wife's money, Henry and Sylvia follow a circuitous route around the continent - as Sylvia entertains Henry with stories of her peculiar family and her damaged friends, of dead ducks and Alma Mahler. Her narrative is a tapestry of remembrances and regrets... and her secret shame: a small, cowardly sin of omission. Yet when the opportunity arises for Sylvia and Henry to do something small but brave, the refrain "if only" returns to haunt her, leaving Sylvia with one more story of love lived and lost.

    A Must-listen!
You know how a new, soon-to-be favorite song grows on you after the first time you hear it? That's just like this book. Except that you move through the first "I don't know about this, but there is something I like in there" straight to the "I love this and I need to hear it again!" in the first listen. Of course this observation comes from someone who lived on an island in the summer and drove around barefoot in a car, depending solely on an AM radio for her listening pleasure. Before there were CDs or iPods, or hell, before there were cassettes and even before there was FM radio. And so the hearing of the new favorite song would be left to fate, "the universe", serendipity - whatever floats your boat and all that.
In the beginning, I was more than a little annoyed by the author's seemingly tedious peregrinations, both literary and actual, and her long, attenuated run-on sentences, thinking "ok this is fine for an MFA thesis, very inventive and lyrical, but ...seriously?", and vowed to give this book no more than a "2". I had that exact same feeling I'd get with a traveling companion I was riding with chose to follow a detour and my patience would give out. But I knew that no writer worthy of her craft would think that a simple Cinderella story would ever be enough. And so, the story of Sylvia and Henry uses mainly backstory to sustain itself, and I found this initially to be disturbing, hell, even sadistic, and why is this Binnie Kirshenbaum making me suffer so much for my prize at the end? But anyway I listened through all of the backstory and the "front story" and came to appreciate the technique of combining past with present, and to admire, even envy, the skill with which the two stories are combined.
Because I knew there was going to be that prize at the end and I knew that Cinerella's glass slipper would shatter in some way, and that would be the end of that. By a bit of foreshadowing, the author establishes a hint of the ending, just enough to keep you going like an addict jonesing for a fix and getting high just knowing the stuff is there. Or at least coming soon. anyway.
This is a great read, and it deals with so many issues, past and present, which in the hands of a lesser talent would be rendered trite, conventional, and also very difficult to follow. But Sylvia's story wanders happily along, seamlessly weaving stories within stories, as the narrative circles around for yet another loop, as the thoroughly relatable characters appear and disappear just at the right time.
    Bravo!

    Opiniones de los miembros:
    A Truly (Latin) American Story
I found Odisea del Norte to be an exceptionally well written and interesting novel. Starting in the present and using a series of flashbacks, Bencastro tells the story of Calixto, a man from El Salvador, who is trapped by circumstances into crossing illegally into the United States.
The book is filled with humor and pathos along with exciting action sequences that will hopefully help everyone to take another look at the problems of "illegal" immigration.
One nice thing about the book is that Bencastro simply tells the story with a minimum of editorializing, thus allowing the reader to come to his or her own conclusions.
Although written in Spanish, the vocabulary and style was quite readable for a non-native Spanish reader such as myself.
The book was a pleasure to read. I was sorry when I got to the end.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree program gives individuals, groups, and corporations an opportunity to adopt less fortunate children and seniors, and provide personalized gifts and necessities to those who would otherwise receive very little or nothing during the holiday season.
When his mom decided it was time for them to leave for good, Thomas knew they better get far away or he'd come and find them. It was Christmas Day, with Mom sweating in a tiny room over a tiny stove, and Dad watching college basketball and drinking with a vengeance. "Thomas, I want you to get your sister and go out to the car, okay?" Mom had promised them that they would be getting a special Christmas present today. Just the two kids. They couldnt mention it to Dad. This is her present, Thomas thought as he waited and worried that the next one out of the house would be the man with the glassy eyes and the tightened jaw. The car left without hesitation. Thomas and Sara had received the best gift ever: freedom. The question was whether it would still be there tomorrow and the next day and the day after that.

Giving and FORGIVING . . . Great Christmas Story
Both simple and complex, Paper Angels is a story for all of us. I love Christmas books, and this one is right up there with the best. It isn't sappy or fake. It's full of humility, love, self examination, and forgiveness. As the grown child of an alcoholic father, I could relate in so many ways to Thomas and his sister. And having come full circle, with grandkids of my own, I have lived to see God's faithfulness, and His blessings to our family, despite many hardships. This is a wonderful book to listen to as a family.
    Great Christmas read
this was a story of hope, forgiveness and, encouragement, While reading this story I was reminded of the way that by thinking beyond our fears..stepping out in faith to give and recieve..you will see how doing something small can have a big impact.Thos story lifted and refreshed my spirit for this Christmas season!
    Beautiful, Heartfelt and Inspiring
What made the experience of listening to Paper Angels the most enjoyable?
The author had a great way of presenting the point of view of the children.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Thomas Brandt
If you could take any character from Paper Angels out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Thomas Brandt because I would like to tell him what an inspiration he is to me.
    Any additional comments?
Jimmy Wayne brings a beautiful story of love, loss, determination and inspiration. The story kept peaking my interest so I kept looking for extra time to listen to another chapter. Just didn't want to turn my device off. I would highly recommend this book!
    Great book!
I enjoyed getting a glimps at both side of the Angel Tree! Great reminder of how much God cares for every part of our lives no matter how big or how small!
    Amazing!
I absolutely loved this book! I usually listen to my books when I'm driving, but it was so good that I continued after I got home.

    Members Reviews:
A good book for fans of Clive Cussler
Overall this book has been a good read and for fans of Clive Cussler it's certainly worthwhile in the collection. That said however, I found Scott's voice to be a little monotone at times but overall he did a good job with the book. His accents were 3 out of 5 but when portraying female characters it was not the best - at time I had to force myself to imagine a woman behind the strong male toned voice.
As for the story line this was a little weak for me especially compared to what I have come to expect from such a great best-selling author like Clive Cussler. That said, however, I did enjoy the book and am glad I purchased it.
I'm really starting to like the Fargos!
Would you listen to Lost Empire again? Why?
As much as I enjoyed the book, I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
That said, I do thoroughly recommend this title, as it's another very good tale, following the Fargos as they globe trot in search of lost treasure.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lost Empire?
I particularly liked the trek through the Madagascar rain forest.
Which character as performed by Scott Brick was your favourite?
There were some very good portrayals. Both Fargos were very good. Rivera was impressive too.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Most definitely
    Gripping
Found it so hard to put it down absolutely brilliant narration on every level loved it.
    Complex plot, lacking flow
For me listening while walking and doing chores this was not an ideal book choice. The plot was complex and forced with a lot of detail, even with Scott Bricks near perfect narration I kept missing vital plot points and having to "rewind". Personally I also felt the story didn't flow as well as the first in the series, parts seemed there as padding between some of the set prices. Enjoyable enough but not Cusslers best
    Great adventure story!
Well narrated and great story. The Fargo's are a force of nature for history hunting.

    Rollicking good yarn
Would you listen to Ancestral Vices again? Why?
I most certainly would listen to Ancestral Vices again and again. It is full of humour, good clear speech and several different voices. The narator is quite an expert at changing his voice to suit the characters which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Ancestral Vices?
I found the experience of the proffessor and the antique bath to be one of the most memorable experiences in the book. An event that was described very vividly by the author and brought to life by the narrator
What about Griff Rhys Joness performance did you like?
The whole story as narrated by Griff Rhys Jones is an absolutely exciting and professional narration. He manages to bring to life each and every character alive and they were just how I imagined them to be like. His use of the author's description coupled with his accents and dialect was an entirely pleasurable experience.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I first read this book several years ago and found that once I had started to read it, I could not put it down. I read it several times and was never dissappointed and so, when I found it on the lists of Audible, I had to listen it. I have now listened to it a couple of times and, like reading the book, I have found that once started I could not switch it off. It is still just as funny as when I first read. The narrator was the perfect choice for this book.
    Any additional comments?
I am going to purchase the rest of the books in the series. I have already listened to Porterhouse Blue by Tom Sharpe and cannot wait to hear his other yarns.
    fantastic
i have read that before n love tom sharpe. please get vintage stuff read by stephen fry.
    Laugh out loud.
Would you listen to Ancestral Vices again? Why?
One of the funniest books I have listened to for ages. Made me laugh from start to finish.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
One of the best bits is when Yapp it trying to take a bath and the mayhem that ensues afterwards.
    Any additional comments?
I would like to see more of Tom Sharpe's work made into audio books so I can re-live the humour and joy of my youth when I read hsi early works.
