3 QUESTIONS to DJ EMERSON:

Q: You met the bass in a really different way. Tell us about the story of your early days.

A: Well, I always loved music from the first time I heard The Rolling Stones and MC5 Records of my father when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old. When I heard "Golden Brown" on the radio one night while driving in my parents car I asked them how they made these sounds and that I wanna make music too. I had no idea how to do it but I always had the urge to produce the music I like myself in any way or another. So i got my first guitar. As time went by I got more and more into the industrial stuff like Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, White Zombie and just like that I ended up listening to a lot of Breakbeat and Drum And Bass and I started mixing and then I got infected with the Techno virus.

Q: You´ve been inside the Techno scene for a very long time yet. How would you describe the development of the last 20 years?

A: These days it´s much more about social media and stuff like that back then you basically released a fat record and went on tour for a year. Now you have to take care of much more stuff. It´s difficult to stand out since we have so many aspiring and established DJs. I wish people would listen better in the clubs. How good the DJ actually mixes and how he selects his music. What tracks he plays. Does he just play what everybody else is playing or does he try to show you interesting new music. It´s still the most important thing! Not what this guy posts before, after and during his show. Studio wise I really like how the sound design has developed and how good many of todays productions actually sound. You can make so much with the software nowadays.

Q: Which Emerson projects can we expect soon?

A: I am currently releasing the remixes for my album with mixes by Johannes Heil, Tales Of The Machines, Yan Cook, A. Mochi, Oliver Deutschmann, Xhei, Conrad Von Orton, Kai Kinkel, Pawn Shop People & Matasism. Then I am preparing a series of micro.fon partys all across europe and I am producing tracks with my homie Thomas Hoffknecht for a collab release.

Q: Talking about your mix. How did these tracks have an impact on your personal development?

A: I always only use(d) my own productions in my live sets so it was kind of a challenge for me to see how I can express this development. So I looked for a lot of old productions that really ment a lot to me back in the days. Some of them I even made a 2017 version of or just a better mixdown.

For example the last track in the mix is like 12 years old and it was on of the first melodic track that I was very happy about. It made me realise that you can make melodic harmonies and it helped me a lot to give me the confidence to explore this kind of storytelling electronic dance music.

Also I recorded some female vocals inside that reminded me of the first progressive music that I started to listen like 15 years ago from artists like Sasha and James Holden.

Q: As a dutch artist – how would you describe the electronic music scene in The Netherlands?

A: I think we have a really huge scene over here. If you think about the small size of the Netherlands it's crazy. Especially the bigger cities have a lot to offer every weekend and the festival season is pretty huge aswell.

I like that you can find all kinds of electronic music scenes. There's something for everybody here and because of the big market also most events are very organised and professional. So nothing to complain actually!

Q: You just released an EP on Gabriel Anandas label Soulful Techno. Which future projects can we expect soon?

A: Yes! "Zijn EP" was released one month ago now and I’m really happy about it cause all tracks are a bit different compared with my last work. It was my first full EP since 2015 cause I’ve released a lot of remixes in the meantime and started working on my debut album that should be finished soon now! Very excited about this one.

Q: You probably got a long story to tell but these few tracks made it inside your mix. Why are they so special for you?

A: "Powerplant" was one of my first successful tracks and it is named after the club night I had my first residency. "Crispy Bacon" is until today one of the best Techno tracks ever, still cool to play! "Digital Orgasm" is one of the oldest Techno vinyls in my collection, very proud of! I could tell you a story to each track but they all were important for the dance scene in the 90´s and for me as well - as a raver and a DJ!

Q: You´ve seen most parts of the world by touring as a DJ. Where´s your favorite spot?

A: Most exciting spot worldwide is definitely Tokyo! No other city has so many different styles, tastes, smells and emotions - it´s a complete crazy place everybody should see sometimes!

Q: Which Tomcraft projects are coming soon?

A: I just started a label with my partner in crime Tim Healey. It´s called DB Stereo (Death by Stereo) and we will have some amazing releases in the next weeks and months. So you can expect some ne and fresh Tomcraft stuff.

Q: Tell us about your mix – how did these tracks have an impact on your career?

A: They brought me to where I am today, I guess. It was quite difficult for me to choose the right tracks out of ten years of DJing, so I decided to use the tracks I played in the past the most and those I would play today too. And during this working process I realized that my taste in music hasn't really changed much at all.

Q: Becoming a well booked DJ/DJane without having releases out is difficult nowadays. How did you manage to go this way? And I´ve heard a release is coming soon?

A: To be honest, I never thought about the fact before that most of the DJs making a living have releases. So I guess on one hand I'm a lucky person, but I think it's also about continuity. The promoters and the party people know exactly what they can expect and what they get from me since ages. And I never tried to play or to be like somebody else, and I think people can see that what I'm doing is authentic, and maybe that's what they like and why I am a well booked DJ nevertheless. And yes, exactly. I spent the past few months in the studio together with a good friend of mine and really talented producer Daniel Jaeger. He helped me a lot and I think we made two great tracks. The style is really similar to the music I use in my DJ-Sets and we also have two nice remixers, but it'll still take a little time till everything is ready.

Q: Give us a little insight in Berlin´s club scene Which locations are your favorite spots?

A: I think it´s no surprise when I name two Clubs: Kater Blau and Sisyphos are my favorite spots, especially for playing. Kater Blau is my second home and became a part of my family and at Sisyphos I like the opportunity to play on different floors with its own style of music. But in the end there´s just one simple reason why I like to play there the most: the soundsystems.

Q: Talking about your mix: how did these tracks have an impact on your career?

A: All of these tracks have had a big influence on me music-wise. In some way or another these tracks kinda describe different periods in my life with music. I mean this mixtape is only 1 hour and if I had to make a mixtape that included ALL the songs that have meant something to me, that mixtape would be lasting for weeks.

Q: From Aalborg/Denmark to the world. Did you ever think about to move to bigger "scene citys" such as Berlin or Barcelona?

A: I actually lived in Barcelona for 6 months. That made it easier for me when I had to fly out for gigs. Sometimes it is a bit difficult for promotors to book me as flights aren’t always the easiest to manage from Aalborg. But I love my city and we have a great House/Techno community here. Maybe some day I will go discover the world, but I’m actually really satisfied with my small hometown.

Q: Which Pete Oak and Blindfold Recordings projects are coming soon?

A: I have some projects coming up on Stil Vor Talent and Blindfold Recordings. But right now I’m working on something completely different project that isn’t house music. Hopefully I will get some more time to get my house-vibes going again over the summer.
