3 QUESTIONS to TILL VON SEIN:

Q: You´ve seen most parts of the world yet by playing and touring. Where is your favorite spot?

A: This is the toughest question somebody can ask me as I've been traveling the world ever since I was three weeks old. There is no particular spot that I would call my absolute favorite, there are just tooo many I could think of. If there was a list South Africa would be really high on it, same as Los Angeles. This year I fell in love with Mallorca, where - funny enough - I as a German have been for the first time.

Q: Talking about your mix: what do these tracks mean to you?

A: All these tracks were game changers in my musical evolution. I still play most of them from time to time. Maybe not original Nuttah or that Prodigy joint but the other ones for sure. It took me quite a while to fully adapt house music to be my main focus as a DJ, that is why I chose some tracks from the early 90s and some from 1999. When I first started listening to electronic music, everything happening in the UK between 1993-1996 had a huge impact on me, labels like Ninja Tunes and Mo Wax for example but also Jungle and all sorts of break beats. The second major influence was French House music. Super Discount and Motorbass' Pansouls album were and still are everything for me. After that came digging into American house music and its originators in the early 2000´s following a short stop soaking up everything happening in West London. I'm trying to showcase all those influences in this mix. Some tracks might be the obvious choice, but when you grow up in a little town in Germany without pirate radio stations, local record stores and DJ heroes, that's how you first start to find your way into it.

Q: There´s a new TILL VON SEIN-EP upcoming on Suol in January I heard? What else is planned for the next year?

A) I’ve been working on this EP since summer and to me it has a solid throwback vibe, back to when there were records with four dope tracks. I always loved buying a diverse 12 inch with more than just that typical A side banger, so this was my goal behind this EP. I’m really happy with the way it turned out. I just sent off three remixes, one for a new label run by Steve Mill which looks really promising, one for friends of mine from Panama for whom I played three times in the past and I'm super stoked to see them starting a label and getting more and more recognition, and the third one is for an old buddy of mine called Malente and his label No Brainer. For 2017 I'm working on a new EP for Pets recordings, Catz n Dogz Label and two split EPs, one with Kid Enigma and one with Meggy.

Q: Talking about your mix: what do these tracks mean to you? How did you meet the bass?

A: Compared to most of our colleagues we haven't been DJing that long. We were producers first and started with DJing about 10 yeasrs ago. In our youth, we weren't much into dance music at all. Rather, we were listening to all kind of non electronic rock music and were playing in bands as guitarists and singers. We both found, however, our way to electronic music in early days via French House-acts as for instance Daft Punk and Le Rythmes Digitales or Propellerheads. The tracks we selected for this podcast were actually the ones that inspired us most while we started our music ambitions with Piemont. Some of these tunes still keep inspire us and have pretty much an effect on how we sound today.

Q: Where´s your favorite place to play your music on this planet?

A: Well, difficult to decide. We really enjoyed our Japan tour which was our most remarkable experience so far. We definitely love to play in Switzerland since we dig the diverse club scene and have lots of friends living there. Of course we like Berlin clubs like Watergate and Kater Blau where we had some amazing parties.

Q: Which Piemont releases are coming up next?

A: We have some cool stuff coming up the next month. First of all we have signed our third EP to our favourite imprint from Italy: Lapsus Music. Moreover, we‘ll release our first EP on Berlin based 'Keno Records'. We've also a bunch of remixes coming up for the likes of Milk & Sugar Recordings and Wally Lopez.

Q) You´re living on an isle in Canada (Gabriola Island, BC), really close to Vancouver but it seems also a bit far away from civilization. What´s special living on the countryside, especially for being a musician?

A) I was fighting the urge to return to the west-coast for some years while living in the EU. It was kind of my dream to live on these islands and make music. So now we're doing it, and we love helping to shape the scene as it begins to develop again.

Q) How did you get in touch with electronic music once?

A) I went with some high-school friends to my first "rave" in 96/97, and I was hooked. Punk was too aggressive, which I was kind of into. So this spark started a fire, which has been burning ever since.

Q) Another tour in Europe is scheduled for December. Where will you be playing and also which Frivolous releases can we expect in 2017?

A) For the tour, I don't really know. I think the usual countries, Portugal, France, Germany, Ukraine back in the mix, so that should be cool. Regarding a new release, I just finished a 3-track EP, but I have no idea where it will be released. Demo's are going out, so stay tuned for news.

3 QUESTIONS to MARKUS KAVKA:

Q) TV & radio moderator, book-author, DJ – is there something missing to complete your career? (guess becoming a professional football player is a little bit too late now)

A) Becoming a professional football player was indeed my first dream. It didn’t come true obviously, but doing all the other stuff has been great fun as well. I am really lucky and blessed considering that I am enjoying my work so much that I would even pay for it. Instead, people are paying ME! Overall I’m a very happy boy.

Q) You started DJing in the 1990s so you probably have a lot of storys to tell. Which special moments left those chosen records in your mind?

A) The overall story of my chosen records spans the complete timeline of electronic music in my life, so I guess will tell you something about the tracks . "Fade To Grey" by Visage was the very first record I bought, in early 1981, age 14. Depeche Mode was aside of The Cure the first band I was a fan of, and I still am. "See You" was the first DM-single I bought in 1982. "Blue Monday" was a true epiphany for me in 1983, I still play this record occasionally in my sets, people always love it. "Quite Unusual" by Front 242 represents my interest in Electronic Body Music and Industrial in the Mid- and Late-80ies. "Unfinished Sympathy" is my favorite track of Massive Attacks 1991-milestone-record "Blue Lines". I still like their stuff. "Terminator" by Goldie marks the beginning of my fascination for Drum´n´Bass in the 90’s, I really danced my ass off to that stuff. Around 1995/96 I started DJing, and Daft Punks seminal album "Homework" was among the stuff I played. I still do as a matter of fact. Steve Bugs classic "Loverboy" marks the Minimal-/Tech House-phase I had in the late 90ies, I still love this track. I was living in Cologne during that time and my favorite Club was Studio672, where Kompakt Records hosted their legendary "Total Confusion"-parties. By then I was completely hooked on Techno. The Wighnomy-Brothers-Remix of Slam’s "This World" is one of my favorite tracks of all time. When it came out in 2004 I literally played it in every single one of my sets for at least one year straight, I still play it from time to time. "Archangel" by Burial is a track by on of my favorite artists of all time, taken from his fantastic 2007 album "Untrue". That´s the stuff I mostly listen to at home. Same thing applies for Moderat and their three wonderful albums. The remix DJ Koze did for their track "Bad Kingdom" is probably one of my most favorite remixes of all time. The journey eventually closes with the remix that Sascha Cawa and Dirty Doering did for my latest track "Holy Moly". Hope you like it. One more important thing: Since almost all the tracks differ very much in style and BPM I deliberately did not mix them. Instead I played them from start to finish in their original tempo. Just in case you wonder.

Q) Which highlights are coming up next behind the decks, out of the studio lab and in front of the TV-cameras?

A) I am looking very much forward to playing at Docks/Hamburg on Dec.3 and KaterBlau/Berlin on Dec.9. In January and February I will go back into the studio to produce new tracks for a spring release. As far as my TV-stuff goes I will continue to present the Football-World-Cup-Qualifiers on RTLnitro.

3 QUESTIONS to NICOLAS MASSEYEFF:

Q) Talking about your mix and your early days: what does these tracks mean to you and how did they form your later career?

A) So for the mix idea, it was really simple for me. I just went through a part of my records collection to select few, but I had a big problem here. I selected too many records for 1 hour mix. So I decide to choose the one I loved to play back in the days. As you can notice in my selection, a lot of titles are coming from USA - Detroit, Chigago.

I really was a big fan of the Detroit and USA sounds in the past, I was collecting all the releases from labels like UR, Planet E, Red Planet, Metroplex, Axis, Teknotika and many more. I was always captivated by some groovy and hypnotic tracks on a side, and on the other hand some tracks with some crazy melodies and deep atmospheres. It could be Deep House, House or Techno, even Electro I was addicted to and I´m still really eclectic. I love the music in general.

Q) How would you describe the electronic music scene in Southern France – where you are living?

A) So I´m living on the French Riviera in a city called Antibes, really close to Cannes and not to far at all from Nice. The scene used to be really big 15/20 years ago, but now we still have some good promotors and partys. And something which makes also the scene really cool is that we have many good locals deejays here, who are distilling some good music in pubs, bars, etc. Especially in the summer time the scene becomes busy, with some cool events on the beach for example. I´m resident of "Limelight" and "Le Bal Des Fous" which are the craziest events from may to september around here. And I have to admit that I love to play there - the crowd is amazing, the vibe is always positive and I can really play whatever I want any time.

Q) Which Masseyeff releases are coming up next?

A) I just made a remix for a Piemont track which has been released on the Super Flu’s label Monaberry and I´ve just launched a label with my good friend Oxia called Diversions Music, so my next releases will be on my own imprint by the end of the year. And then I´m also thinking to start working on a new album, because the "Motherland" was already released 5 years ago. So I think it is the right time for me to finish some ideas I have in my head.
