When you examine your finances and you don't see the kind of growth that you want, you may have a problem with underearning, overspending, or both. What is the difference between those two problems and how do you identify them?

Mark Butler is a budget-loving finance nerd and is the founder of the accounting startup Let's Do the Books. He's been on my show several times, and in this 2016 episode we discuss personal and business finance, underearning, and overspending.

When Mark is hired by a client and takes a look at that person's or that business's financial situation, he's looking for a sense of their earnings, their spending, and the difference between the two. This is how he identifies whether there is an earning problem, a spending problem, or neither. Mark knows that it's neither if there's a surplus each month and that surplus is growing and accelerating over time. If that's not present then there is an underearning or overspending issue.

In order to identify the issue, you've got to talk numbers. That might be a really uncomfortable subject for you. I absolutely love talking about money but I know that not everyone does! We tend to think about our careers in a certain way. We imagine that we'll have only one job title for most of our careers. We hope that we'll do that one job one way for many years and then smoothly retire. But there are many other ways to think about careers and the way that they might evolve throughout our working lives.

Marci Alboher is an author, speaker, journalist, and coach who focuses on careers and workplace issues. She is the author of the book One Person/Multiple Careers: A New Model for Work/Life Success. She's currently a vice president at Encore.org, a nonprofit dedicated to bridging divides, connecting across generations, and creating a better future together.

Marci has been on my show prior to this episode. She made me and my listeners think of jobs and careers in a different way as slasher careers. I am an example of a slasher career: radio talk show host/life coach/director of a youth sports team. Even when I was a college professor my title was full of slashes on the formal job description.

In this episode, which originally aired in 2013, Marci returned to talk about a new way to think about careers in the second half of our lives. A change in career midway through life may have come about due to a forced layoff, reentering the workforce after caring for your family, or a deep desire to do something different. Something I find with so many of my clients is that they apologize. Sometimes they genuinely believe they are sorry for something, but other times, they use I'm sorry because there's space, and they want to fill it.

The phrase I'm sorry is often overused. I spend a fair amount of time helping my clients notice they're saying it and reframing their thinking around it. We say it so frequently that sometimes it loses its meaning, but awareness is the first step in making a change.

There are some things that we should apologize for, but we should not apologize for things that are not our responsibility. We have been culturally programmed to apologize for things that don't always warrant an apology, and I'm showing you how to be deliberate in this powerful area of your life.

I invite you to ask yourself: why are you apologizing? Check in with yourself and pay attention to what you're doing with I'm sorry and what's behind it. Ask yourself what you're apologizing for and whether it's something you're truly responsible for.

Breast cancer transformed Terri Fedonczak's life by creating clarity that helped her release her pursuit of money and status. She instead began to focus on cultivating deep relationships with her four daughters and her patient husband.

On a trip to South Africa, Terri witnessed the power of lionesses as they supported each other within the pride. It was a lightning bolt of realization that led her on a mission to help cultivate similar support systems in people's families, especially between parents and teenagers.

Showing yourself compassion is one thing, but sometimes something else is going on instead. Laura Boyd is back this week, and we're asking the question: compassion is that an excuse?

When you keep having the same stories over and over and haven't figured out how to stop those stories from happening, this is where the concept of compassion gets challenging. 

I invite you to think about what compassion truly means to you. If you're constantly giving yourself compassion for the same situation, is it compassion or is it an excuse? Be honest with yourself and really reflect on this question.

Yes it's the 21st Century, but sexism in the workplace still lives on. My friend Karen and I were spending time together in Texas and we had a conversation about this topic. Then and there we decided that we should talk about it on the podcast and that it might be time for me to share my story.

Karen Walrond is a leadership coach, speaker, author, and photographer. She is the author of several books including The Beauty of Different: Observations of a Confident Misfit, and the upcoming book The Lightmaker's Manifesto. 

Karen joined me for a time as a guest co-host on How She Really Does It. In this episode, which originally aired in 2016, we discuss sexism in the workplace. We'll share our stories of sexism in the workplace as well as ways to discover who are the people who matter in our lives.

This episode was the first time that I publicly shared my story of experiencing sexism in the workplace. I shared it not to verbally vomit on everyone who hears it, but to help you understand that you are not alone if you are going through this or if you know someone who's going through it.

When we have problems, we tend to want to fix them immediately. We read leadership books or seek out trainings and become so absorbed and focused on the right way of doing things to get the outcome we want. But there is no right way and being a brave leader is more than reading a book or attending training.

We may think we want the quick fix or the easy road, but we don't get strong because life was easy for us; we get strong from pushing ourselves through difficult things. 

When we opt for the easy road or settle and convince ourselves, this is as good as it gets, we're lying to ourselves. If something is possible, it is possible for you, and when you can step into brave leadership, it's hard but so worth it.

You are going to fall down, and you are going to fail. But I invite you to allow yourself the space to do so, take the key learnings, and apply them to your life to move forward. Brave leadership is uncomfortable, it's messy, and you're going to make mistakes, but it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong.

How do you feel about your income? Could you be earning more than you are now? Underearning affects so many women who are not being paid as much as they are worth. Even if you are currently underearning, financial empowerment is within your reach. 

In this 2009 episode I interviewed Barbara Huson, then Barbara Stanny. Barbara is a coach and author who is on a mission to motivate women to become financially empowered. She is the author of several books including: Overcoming Underearning, Prince Charming Isn't Coming: How Women Get Smart About Money, and Secrets of Six-Figure Women: Surprising Strategies to Up Your Earnings and Change Your Life.

Barbara grew up wealthy. Her father was the R in H&R Block. She never had to think about money. But shortly after Barbara got married, she found out her husband was a compulsive gambler. He went on to lose millions of her inheritance. It wasn't until after her divorce, and after her ex-husband had left the country, that Barbara started getting million dollar tax bills for back taxes and illegal dealings that her husband had been involved in. That was the moment that Barbara realized she needed to get smart about money.

I felt so stupid about money. My eyes would glaze over and my brain would fog up any time I looked at anything financial, Barbara says in this episode. Now she is a financial expert who teaches other women financial literacy and how to earn what they are worth.

The Great Awakening was historically a religious term used to describe the catastrophic part of the war that brought people closer to religion. But it is prominent today in a different context, in life following a worldwide pandemic.

The pandemic has caused us to step back and question things like why am I here? and what is my purpose? It has given us perspective on what exactly we're waiting for to make a change in our lives, and what steps we need to take to get there.

Laura Boyd joins me again this week to explore this collective experience further. The Great Awakening will be different for everybody, and I invite you to consider what this looks like for you. Are you making decisions in your life from a place of love and compassion, or fear and shame?
