The Great Depression, a period of devastating economic hardship, began in the United States in 1929. Though its roots were complex, the stock market crash on Black Thursday (October 24, 1929) served as a grim trigger. This crash wiped out fortunes, leading to bank failures as people rushed to withdraw their savings.

A silver lining came out of the calamity at least for pro football and the franchise in New York City.
