Vivid and poetic
I finished reading this book around two weeks ago, and the characters are still populating my thoughts. Their love for one another, their struggles, their heart breaking stories of just-missed opportunities, invite the reader not only to share their sorrow, but also to join them in unravelling the threads of the questions that have plagued their thoughts after the calamitous deaths of Markoâs beloved friend Kemal and Williamâs lover Anya.
The stories of these four main characters are played out a decade apart, in 1994 during the Bosnian war and in 2004 at the time of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. As such, the novel is at times harrowing and at times joyously appreciative of the human condition.
The settings and the consciousness of the characters are drawn so poetically that there are lines from this novel that you will want to memorise. I will leave you with three beautiful examples (and defy you not to want to read this book!
âOver a black sea, the moon rolled a flickering ribbon of light.â
âWhatever lightness entered William on the way back from Bangkok, whatever sense of wonder for the world, it has stepped out of him and is walking away, leaving only the noise of the room swelling in his ears.â
âPeople are like those tipping cups in Japanese gardens, filled with a constant stream of water, compelled to tip. She will take what he has told her, and at some point or another, it will be tipped into someone else. And like this, drop by drop, the water will recede from him, taking Anya with it.â

The book is based around the Bosnian war and a Tsunami disaster spanning over two different decades. The survival and effects each traumatic event had on the different characters lives, was very well potrayed by the author.
I found this book a little hard to get into at the start but I am glad I continued as I was able to relate to the characters as the story progressed.
4 stars from me and I look forward to reading further books from this author.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in return for my honest review.
Hard to follow
I found this book very hard to follow. I am a fan of stories that move around time wise, but this one didn't quite work for me.
