Looking forward to Book 2

I enjoyed this story from start to finish. What starts off innocently enough as a simple newspaper article turns into a hell of a roller coaster ride of epic proportions that, in spite of its supernatural origins, was believable and suspenseful to me as a listener.

I enjoyed the profanity. Why? Because it's the way real people talk. The fact that there are religious overtones to the story didn't strike me as preachy as it did some other readers. I saw it as simply author's decision. Each book about a secret society has to have roots somewhere and religion is as good a place as any to start. I don't want to spoil it for you because I believe this is one of those books you should go into knowing as little as possible.

Just know that Jonathan Chateau will take you on an enjoyable journey with unpredictable twists and turns. The narrator, Chris Rice, did a fine job keeping the pace of this great story. This was a book I didn't want to end, and the further I got into it, the more I started to dread the ending because I didn't want the book to end! I got this book in exchange for an honest review. I am dying for the next story from this author.

Mostly-solid first entry

I didn't realize when I picked up this book that it was written by an author I had just finished listening to in "Nightmares in Analog". I enjoyed that collection on the whole, so was even more excited to give this story a listen.

I wasn't disappointed. This tale seems to be the first entry in a series about a transporter of holy goods who doesn't really buy into the fact that the goods are holy. Only, it's not that he believes in God, it's more like he believes that if there is a God, he pretty much sucks.

With this background in place, the author begins to weave a sort of coming of age tale where we see our once-resentful protagonist learn to embrace the God he shunned. In doing so, he begins to accept gifts granted to him and learn what his purpose truly is.

It's a decent mix of sci-fi/supernatural with a dash of religion.

Author is new to me and normally lawyer stories are boring. This was was exciting and believable. Great listen. And leaves you hanging for the next one.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I listen to audio books all the time. I have forced myself to get through 2 hours of this boring story. I am not sure if it is the story with the narrator or both. It is just that bad. Don't waste your time!

Would you consider the audio edition of Plain Dealing to be better than the print version?

Hard to say. I loved the book so much and now hearing this I love it even more.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Plain Dealing?

The opening scene is so brilliant you think it can't get better. But oh boy the second-last chapter is too amazing! And then there's a fantastic final chapter to cap it all. But the second-last chapter is to die for (ha! ha!)

What does Ian Patrick bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The accents, the lovely clear speech: all so real and true to life

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The final scene of the second-last chapter. The big guy in the bed. So amazing.

My former Vice-Chancellor gave this book a five-star review so I bought it. She was so, so right. It was five stars all the way. Then I decided to listen to the audio-book of the same thing. Now I'll go get the whole series.

The last fifteen minutes at the end of the penultimate chapter is terrifying and cliff-hanging.

Tenjiwe is magnificent. What a woman. What a cop. What a marks(wo)man!

What made the experience of listening to Plain Dealing the most enjoyable?

The narrator has got these characters right between the eyes. Very enjoyable accents and idiosyncrasies, and lovely tension.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mashego is a really intriguing character in this audio rendition of the book. Accent is slightly inferred and very authoritatively performed. I also like the forensics women. So sharp. They cut any macho men down to size, and rightly so.

Mashego, for the above reasons.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no. I like to hear it in big hefty pieces. The chapter sizes are perfect for this.

Good series

A long gap in between books I hope that s not a pattern with the author but ive always just enjoyed the lives that live in the story and the reader is great.

a bit better than average

Nothing like old bones, a deserted orphanage, fifty years speeding past and so on. This is fun, interesting, not gory, a smart heroine - and Bob's your uncle -you're having a good time listening.
