Members Reviews:
Gripping dark thriller.
What did you love best about Shutter Island?
The complex characters, particularly Teddy. Haunted by myriad ghosts and has a thinly-veiled brutal nature.
What other book might you compare Shutter Island to and why?
The Magus by John Fowles. As with The Magus, in Shutter Island, reality is not as it appears.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Teddy sets fire to Dr Collies car. Disturbingly, I found this scene quite satisfying!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Definitely. I found Dolores interaction with the children shocking and macabre.
Any additional comments?
A thought-provoking novel.
Gripping and so well read
Where does Shutter Island rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
near the very top! this is one of those books that really does have it all, interesting story, very well written and impeccably read. It's set in an insane asylum which piqued my interest immediately (I find books about the mind so intriguing!) and as you would imagine...all is not as it seems. there are some fabulous twists that I certainly didn't see coming. It is terribly sad in places and can be quite unsettling, the ending is so so good!!!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Chuck... or was it? no spoilers, you'll have to listen to find out!
Have you listened to any of Tom Stechschultes other performances? How does this one compare?
No I haven't but I fully intend to now.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no... I didn't want the book to end as it was so good but I was also desperate to get to the truth with Teddy!
Any additional comments?
JUST. GET. IT. You won't be disappointed!
Breathtaking!
Any additional comments?
Beautifully written and great performance. I listened to this in 2 sittings (not sitting really, tidying!) I loved every minute of it! Thoroughly recommend! The setting, characters, twist all bloody brilliant, captivating, so emotional!
I'm still confused
Any additional comments?
It's a good concept for a story but after finishing this book I was left confused i didn't feel there was any closure to this book. Also I'm disbelief of myself that I sat and listened to the entire book. I was not impressed with the crudeness of this book even though I do understand that I was written in a time period where no one cared about being pc but there is a limit I mean hairspray was written in the same time period but they didn't go overboard in what they called people are how they expressed how they felt are what they thought of women.
I liked the narrator but not the book
Gripping!
Stay with it. It gets better. Tom Stechschulte is an brilliant orator! He really new how to do each voice. Dennis Lehane blew my mind. Gripping!!
