    Title: The Doctor's Daughter
    Author: Hilma Wolitzer
    Narrator: Anna Fields
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-14-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Alice Brill wakes up one day with a vague but nagging sensation of unease in her chest that signals trouble. Is it her marriage - drifting along for years on autopilot - that's so troubling? Her unrealized aspirations as a writer? Her unsettled younger son? Or is it something about her father, once a prominent surgeon but now slipping deeper into senility in a nursing home? There is also the matter of the writer whose book she's editing in her new profession as a "book doctor", with whom a deeper involvement looms. This is a smart, beautifully observed novel about a woman coming to terms with the hidden truths of her life.
    Members Reviews:
Worth the wait for another book from this talented author!
I love this author so I was excited to read her newest book, especially since there was such a long hiatus between books. As I read, I couldn't help but wonder if Hilma Wolitzer drew on her own experience and if this helped explain the long wait between books. Everything just seemed so real that it made sense that she'd have been writing from personal experience, at least to some degree.
Based on her real life or not, this one is absolutely spell-binding, filled with characters that come alive and with a world which was so engaging that I didn't want to leave it, didn't want to finish the book.
At the heart of the book is Alice, in her 50s, a wife, a mother, a frustrated writer...and who is facing way too much pressure as one crisis after another emerges. She is being demoted at work, her children aren't turning out as she expected and her marriage is in major crisis. As if that wasn't enough, she has an aging parent to handle, leading to a review of her past, of her entire life.
I really related to this book, not because I face similar crisises in my life (at least, not yet) but because the writing was so sure and authentic. Everything seemed believeable and, as the best books so often do, this one revealed how hard true growth can be - but how necessary to a fulfilling life. Read this one carefully and you'll find yourself feeling richer for the experience - and perhaps even a bit wiser - all while being entertained by a very fine writer. What more could one ask?
    Great writing
Great, easy read. Beautiful writing. Worth reading as a reminder of how our upbringing impacts our life, even so many years later...but shouldn't imprison us.
    What a great writer
THis was the first book I have read by this author. The story held my interest from beginning to end. It is fast-paced but thought provoking about a woman whose marriage was unraveling at age 51 and realized it when she woke up one morning and felt that something wasnt righy
Not as good as I expected
I have to admit that I judged this book by its cover as I am a doctor's daughter. The book started off very interestingly, with the main character, Alice, reaching midlife and looking for answers, both in her past and present. The past is blurred as her mother is dead and her father has dementia.
From there the story does not know exactly what it wants to be, as it wonders off in many different directions. With the exception of Alice's best friend, I did not find the characters to be particurly likeable, so it was hard to get behind any of them. It did pick up toward the end, however the conclusion was evident long before I reached it.
On the plus side, the writing was excellent.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Cook, the Crook, and the Real Estate Tycoon, by prize-winning Chinese novelist Liu Zhenyun, is a novel of Beijing that paints a microcosm of contemporary China, dealing with classes at the two extremes: the super rich and the migrant workers who make them rich through deceit and corruption. The protagonist, Liu Yuejin, is a worksite cook and small-time thief whose bag is stolen. In searching for it, he stumbles upon another bag, which contains a flash disk that chronicles high-level corruption, and sets off a convoluted chase. There are no heroes in this scathing, complex, and highly readable critique of the dark side of Chinas predatory capitalism, corruption, and the plight of the underclasses. A movie adaptation and TV series appeared in 2008 in China.

A decent book, but not my cup of tea....
For some reason, this book didn't quite click for me. It may have been because none of the characters were particularly sympathetic, or because the plot twists felt like a wild goose chase to nowhere, but this turned out to be one of those "grind-it-out" books that I had to force myself to finish.

  • Search Party Audiobook by Valerie Trueblood

    Title: Search Party
    Subtitle: Stories of Rescue
    Author: Valerie Trueblood
Narrator: Kymberly Dakin, Christine Marshall, Corey Gagne, Moira Driscoll, Casey Turner, J. Paul Guimont
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-25-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In the epigraph to this volume, Penelope Fitzgerald tells us, "If a story begins with finding, it must end with searching". And so we discover each story here to follow the arc of a search, just as each also contains a rescue. What is immediately apparent is that it will be impossible to guess the form this rescue will take or even who it is who'll require it.
Instead the astonishingly talented Valerie Trueblood has imbued each story with its own depth and mystery, so rescue comes as a surprise to the listener, who is in intimate sympathy for the soul in extremity. And these are diverse characters whose fates, in lesser hands, might be thought of as hopeless: the fired cop turned security guard, the stolid 19-year-old nurses' aide who will not be going to art school, the cynical radio producer who is dying of breast cancer and on a plane on her way to Lourdes.
In these 13 stories, linked by a common transcendent human genius, the writing is confident, clear, original, and often drop-dead stunning - as if the stories are being told by the most casually eloquent among us.
    Members Reviews:
    Search Party;A wonderful read
Ms Trueblood deploys her amazing skills as a writer in service of telling fascinating stories. These are stories of rescue, but of an unexpected sort.
Each story is a completely different world. Each so fully realised in detail, that once you enter you are reluctant to leave, sad to turn the last page. But then, there is another story, another world.
These stories will merit re-reading for their insight and beauty.
    Fabulous stories
Trueblood has the unusual ability to write on many levels at once, an ability shared by only the best contemporary short story writers such as Alice Munro. Her stories are meaty and thought provoking and I can read no more than one per day. Sometimes the writing moves me to start again at the beginning of the story to savor it one more time. A treasure.
    These stories are revelations.
I don't know how Trueblood does it. I had to stop once or twice each page because a sentence startled me -- with recognition of something I dimly knew but hadn't put into words, or with a depth of seeing into the human predicament that made me want to pause and ponder. This may be my favorite of her books.
    Four Stars
I really liked this book. The characters are interesting and the stories are well written.
    Misled by title and descriptions
I read this book, finished it, like eating my vegetables as a child. I thought it was going to be a collection of stories about search and rescue parties who rescue people after some accident or disaster. I was anticipating stories about the risks that the search party members take to find or save those people/children who have been injured or lost, a different viewpoint from that of the person who was lost and found. I had my sites set on something else and I was disappointed.

  • The Incomparable Atuk Audiobook by Mordecai Richler

    Title: The Incomparable Atuk
    Author: Mordecai Richler
    Narrator: Luke Humphrey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-23-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Transplanted to Toronto from his native Baffin Island, Atuk the poet is an unlikely overnight success. Eagerly adapting to a society steeped in pretension, bigotry, and greed, Atuk soon abandons the literary life in favour of more lucrative - and hazardous - schemes.
Richlers hilarious and devastating satire lampoons the self-deceptions of "the Canadian identity" and derides the hypocrisy of a nation that seeks cultural independence by slavishly pursuing the American dream.
    Members Reviews:
    A Canadian in-joke?
I'd heard good things about the book, including the urban legend about the movie that was never made because every person who read for it died.
Nope, very lame. I grew up reading books in the 60's and recognize the Vonnegut/Heller style to which he aspired but it's just not worth reading. I gave up one third of the way through because, as short as the book is, 178 pages, LIFE is too short to waste on a book with no characters that held my interest.
    Hilariously brilliant.
As political satire goes, this book is hard to beat. It paints a vivid picture of Canada in the 60s (it was published in 1963) yet manages to ring even truer today. Hilariously brilliant.
    "Canada wake up..."
Biting satire and black humour characterize this short novella about an Inuit poet who leaves his remote community for a visit to the big city, Toronto. Having been discovered by a fur trader, his poem had reached such popularity among the city folks that they wanted to see the "Eskimo" from Baffin Bay in person. Atuk, however, finds urban life so rich, in many different ways, that he decides to stay. Initially he may come across as an innocent fool, easily exploited and controlled by his "benefactors", but he is a fast learner and soon joins the games and schemes successfully to his own advantage. Until...
Published in 1963 when Richler was living in England, having left Canada in the 1950s, the story benefits from the author's physical and intellectual distance from his country. It thrives on the caricature of a set of Canadians and their machinations. There are, among others, the Uber-Canadian tycoon, the undercover police officer searching for a American colonel who disappeared on Baffin Island while spying, and the investigative journalist who discovers truths mainly about herself. The powerful TV chat show host meddles in controversy and the nice professor has his own secrets. The storyline cannot be revealed without giving too much away. Suffice to say, that it is deliberately farcical and outlandish, yet fast moving and at times confusing enough to keep the reader intrigued.
With Atuk Richler brings out the different political and social stereotypes of the day and, above all, takes Canadians to task over their self image and their national identity, their latent or conspicuous racism and bigotry, their consumerism, greed and tendency to admire all that is American. While written more than 40 years ago, his book has meaning beyond the historical. In addition is a fun read! [Friederike Knabe][
    Timeless
Atuk is a Baffin Island artist, or sort of. He gets an invite to Toronto to read his poetry, which is awful, but which intellectuals applaud in an attempt at inclusion, or, in Canada speak, cultural nationalism.

    Title: The Mountain Can Wait

Length: 8 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-19-15
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
"Her face in the headlights flashed like a coin. She was an instant, the sulphuric flare of a match."
Tragedy erupts in an instant. Lives are shattered irrevocably. A young man drives off into the night, leaving a girl injured, perhaps fatally so.
From that cliffhanger opening, Sarah Leipciger takes listeners back and forward in time to tell the haunting story of one family's unraveling in rural logging country where the land is still the economic backbone. Like the novels of Annie Proulx, this extraordinarily lyrical debut is rooted in richly detailed nature writing and sharply focused on small-town mores and the particularities of regional culture.
Marrying the propulsive story of a father and son who, in the wake of catastrophe, must confront their private demons to reach for redemption with an evocative meditation on our environmental legacy, The Mountain Can Wait introduces Leipciger as a talent to watch.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this assured debut novel Leipciger beautifully captures the tender and mercurial relationship between father and son, Tom and Curtis Berry. These are characters you care about, flawed and haunted by regret, existing in the harsh yet undeniably radiant world of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Leipciger writes with great compassion and precision, her language is an exquisite mix of muscle and grace. The Mountain Can Wait resonated with wonderful imagery which will stay with me for a very long time." (Michele Forbes, author of Ghost Moth)
"It's clear and beautiful, like swimming in a mountain lake." (Mark Haddon, author of New York Times best seller The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time)
"The Mountain Can Wait is a taut, psychologically gripping novel populated by original characters constantly at battle with nature, family, society, and themselves. This is a book that kept me up at night. Leipciger has Margaret Atwood's rare flair for crafting an intelligent and suspenseful novel." (Nickolas Butler, best-selling author of Shotgun Lovesongs)

    Returning this book
What would have made The Mountain Can Wait better?
Do not bother with this book. It is boring and really doesn't focus on what the summary says it does.
What was most disappointing about Sarah Leipcigers story?
    BORING
What didnt you like about Robert Petkoffs performance?
His performance was find, but the book was so boring that he couldn't have made it into a good performance.

    Publisher's Summary:
Imagine reading a novel in the sanctuary of your own home only to realize in one heart-stopping moment that it is a novel about you...and about one awful day, 20 years ago, that you've spent the rest of your life trying to forget.
When a book entitled The Perfect Stranger lands in her mailbox, successful documentary filmmaker Catherine is intrigued. But as she turns its pages, she realizes its dark story is inspired by her own life. In vivid and harrowing detail, the narrative describes the day on which her life changed forever and she became hostage to a dark secret. Desperate to discover who the author is and what he or she wants, Catherine races to the end - only to be confronted by a portrayal of her death.
Intertwined with Catherine's narrative is that of Stephen Brigstocke, a grieving widower who discovers among his late wife's possessions a manuscript that horrifies him. Convinced that it tells the truth - that Catherine caused their son's death 20 years ago - he cannot rest until he exposes her guilt. He shares it not only with her but also with her husband and son, both of whom react violently to its contents. As Catherine's world falls apart, she knows that the only way forward is to confront Brigstocke and tell him what really happened that day, even if the reality is even more agonizing than what he currently believes.
Disclaimer is a breathtakingly suspenseful debut novel about a woman haunted by secrets, the corrosive power of grief, the consuming desire for revenge, and the terrible price we pay for hiding the truth.

You never know if you are right
I really enjoyed reading it. It is itriguing, with certain twists I could never guess about. I also like the story told from different points of view, at different time periods that give a fuller picture and so many details. I could really see in my imagination what was going on. It is also a very powerful and yet tough book. I cannot even imagine how a person may even think that he has a right to riun other people's lives. That is horrible, and it really shocked me. I can say I was really nervous about the main character's (Catherine) life because what she had to go through was something that could easily crash, destroy life, hope, belief, and personal integrity.
Makes you think twice about what you think you know
Very quick, great read. Once you start, you won't want to stop. Makes you second guess things you think you know. Definitely recommend
    Really different thriller
Great writing and a very unique story for the thriller/suspense genre. Highly recommended.
    You'll know when you know.
Very well crafted, perhaps to a fault. It's a story of shifting perceptions. Well worth the read but at the end you may feel as I did, a bit manipulated by a very strict timeline releasing of key facts. I do recommend it in spite of that nit picky critique. It provokes thoughts of something we all do, judge the book by the cover.
    Good build-up
Lots of twists and turns, and it kept me reading to find out how it would end. But I have to say I didn't like the characters in the book. I don't think it was as good a read as either Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train
