Fourth novel, fourth success for Cathy

Where The Shamrocks Grow is the fourth novel to come from the pen of best selling author Cathy Mansell.

Following the success of her first three novels, and especially the well deserved popularity of debut novel Shadow Across the Liffey, yet again Cathy takes her readers on a different kind of journey in her latest work.

In a change from her previous style readers are introduced to Jo and we follow her through the many dramatic twists and turns of her life. Starting in Cathy's beloved Ireland this tale marks a departure for her as she takes her story many thousands of miles across the Atlantic as Jo experiences joy and heartbreak in America.

Cathy's readers are used to being introduced to vivid and realistic characters and they won't be disappointed this time. This new story is populated with many new characters that leap from the page. Readers are intrigued to find out the impact that Madame Colbert. Jean-Pierre and Mike will have on Jo's life, but not always in the way they may expect.

Cathy's attention to detail, period and setting reach new heights in her latest work as the backdrop of Irish politics and later the Wall Street crash add a refreshing sense of realism to the events, meaning that the reader learns a little of the era as well as enjoying the unfolding drama.

I highly recommend Cathy's new book to her growing legion of readers and also to any who haven't yet sampled the delight of a Cathy Mansell novel.

Definitely her best work to date, this is an exciting, intriguing and well written tale. With its twists and turns and gripping mix of drama and emotion you may need to clear your schedule for a while as once you start reading you won't want to stop!

Highly recommended!

This is Cathy Mansell's fourth novel and and her main character Jo, is immensely likeable and I found myself caring about her right from the beginning. She displays immense courage as she experiences the highs and lows of life, both in Ireland and later in America. Again the author has paid meticulous attention to detail and authenticity, and there is much of interest in this book, with its background of Irish politics and the Wall Street Crash. Peopled with many vivid characters, this is a perfect read for anyone looking for an absorbing well-written story.

Another great book by Cathy. Cathy puts so much research in to her books you Know they are real places. and at the end you feel you Know the characters personally. Loved it well done Cathy.

Women's Fiction

Dublin's Fair City is Women's Fiction set in the mid 1960's in Dublin and Birmingham. This is a light easy read, a mix of family saga and light romance. Eighteen year old Aileen Maguire lives with her parents, they run a haberdashery shop. Eileen's mother is ill and on her deathbed writes a small note asking Aileen to find her long lost brother and ask his forgiveness.

Aileen's father is shocked by his wife's death and secret revelation, he falls into despair and whilst grieving allows Aileen's Aunt Lizzie to take over and Aileen finds herself cold shouldered out of the family home. She goes to Birmingham to stay with a distant relative and wishes to discover more about her mother and her past. However the answers are not in England.

Events in England test her relationship with boyfriend Dermot who is back in Ireland, they take their relationship to breaking point when Aileen finally returns home for good. Can she find the answers about her long lost brother? Will she make things right with Dermot?

The storyline is very much dialogue led which slows the pace and for me, misses opportunities for leading the read with descriptive sentences filled with emotion and passion. There is room to add depth to the writing by taking more time with the main points and considering if all the lesser story threads add to the main theme. To remain competitive in the saturated women's fiction genre I'd like to see a slimming of weak words and sentences and a touch up of the dialogue to make it vivid, sharp and pace setting.

PERCEPTIVE AND ENGROSSING

Cathy Mansell is a born storyteller. I have read her other novels and came to this one with keen anticipation. And I wasnât disappointed. I felt for Aileenâs bewilderment and anguish as her home life disintegrated, and she was forced to leave her home city of Dublin. With perception the author has described how innocent and trusting a young woman could be even in the mid-sixties. But once in the Midlands, Aileen soon discovers the realities of life and finds herself drawn into a situation that brings with it at first fear and then danger.

The strength of this novel is Aileen herself, not only her loyalty and courage, but her desperate struggle to âdo the right thingâ, which is why she shoulders the burden of her motherâs secret. Peopled with well-drawn characters, I found it an absorbing and enjoyable read - and I do so love a happy ending. Highly recommended.

Three Stars

A good light read with a great story

A really enjoyable book!.

The story of Oona draws us in from the beginning and makes us care deeply about her, owing to the dreadful experience which she has to go through when the policeman arrives to break the news. The device of using the happiness of the party to be the forerunner of such a monstrous tragedy is well done.

We long for better days and are not denied them, although the many difficulties she experiences on the way, coupled with bringing up a boy without a father, is well-drawn. Oona's journey through the novel culminates with the love she seeks and which the reader has hoped for all along.

The setting shows some of the difficulties encountered in Ireland's historical past and will be especially appealing to Irish hearts as well as any reader who desires a good love story woven into a well-rounded plot.

I am sure that we shall be seeing much more of Cathy and I wish her great success with her next book.

A Heart Warming Tale

This is a wonderful tale of real life, love and intrigue. The author takes you on a journey from tragedy to the hope of a new beginning. You will be totally caught up in the lives of the extremely well crafted characters.

Set in Ireland in the early 60's Cathy conjures up perfectly the atmosphere of the location and era.

You will laugh and cry but more than that you will not want to put it down! A lovely story with an exciting twist. What is the Shadow Across the Liffey....?

This is the first novel from a bright new talent. I've a feeling that this author is one to watch!

'I have a complaint to make about 'Shadow Across the Liffey.' It kept me awake three nights in a row. Why? I just had to keep turning the pages to discover how tragic Oona Quinn copes with life after suddenly losing a beloved husband and daughter. Can things get any worse for this brave and resourceful character? They can. Treat yourself to an utterly compelling read and if, like me, you find yourself losing sleep, believe me, it's worth it!'

Triumph Over Adversity

I love a story that moves along at apace and has a rich seam of characters I can identify with. Shadow Across the Liffey is such a book. Who would not empathise with Oona who has experienced such tragedy in her life? She deserves to find true love. Just when we think that she has found the happiness which has eluded her for so long - her past catches up with her in the form of the villainous Vinny. Shades of the late, great Maeve Binchy echo throughout this novel and I look forward to reading more from this new Irish writer.

Sequel to Scars of Youth.

In My Dreams is the sequel to Scars Of Youth by Shane Morales. The story starts seven years after the first book ends and Jess is now working in a hospital thinking she will never see Kyle again but fate has other ideas. When a chance encounter happens Jess decides she would rather have Kyle in her life as a friend than nothing at all. Can the two be friends or will jealously destroy what little they have. I love how Shane Morales shows how two people are in love and still have to go through the highs and lows of life. This story made me laugh and cry at the same time. In My Dreams is a page turner and a quick read. If you are interested in Young Adult I highly recommend Grabbing one of Shane's books.

A story of renewed love! After Jess runs into her high school boyfriend, she knows she still loves him, but does he feel the same?

Torn, troubled and tormented. Terrific!

If you loved Scars of Youth, this will explain so much of the dreadful incidents combining to make Jess such a deeply disturbed character. Moralesâ skill is such that is such that as a reader, you care so deeply about his torn, tormented characters you want to reach into the kindle and slap them out of their spiral of despair and destruction. These characters will stay with you long after you finish reading.

Fantastic Read

In My Dreams was a fantastic read. The characters were well developed with a strong storyline connecting the meant to be lovers. The prequel, Scars of Youth, was also fantastic, but I just can't express how much more I loved reading In My Dreams. I'm a sucker for happy endings and overcoming debilitating problems as the characters grow into who they are meant to be.
