Not that romantic...

It started out decent enough. The action at the very beginning of the novel captivated me, and I wanted to read more about these star-crossed lovers who shared but a single kiss before being torn away to completely separate and different lives. It's a tragic tale of love denied and definitely had potential. But then we skip YEARS at a time. More than once. Sometimes the span is vast (I think 13 years was the longest, and then one or two 8 year spans). I started disliking both main characters, and I honestly only finished the book because I've never NOT finished one. There was so little actual romance that I'm not sure I'd place this in that category. Towards the end when one of the characters is feeling sorry for themselves and bemoaning their lives, I couldn't even summon anything related to empathy. That's it, I was ambivalent to all the characters by the conclusion. Don't look here for a happily ever after.

Captivating Story

I enjoy historical fiction, especially when it relates to medieval England. When I saw this e-book offered in a giveaway I immediately entered. I was glad to receive a free copy in exchange for a review.

Lisa Yarde writes well and the places and characters really come alive. I found that I couldn't stop reading once I read the first couple of chapters. Good historical details of pre-1066 life, I could tell she'd done research. Even though there were many characters and several plot lines, nothing got tangled or messy. I was able to keep it all straight in my head. The characters are memorable and individuals, well developed.

My one complaint would be in regards to the sexual content. There were some passages I skipped because of how detailed the writing was in that regard. I don't personally enjoy reading about it, and that's why I can't give the book a 5. For me it took away from the enjoyment of the book. If that type of stuff doesn't bother you then you can ignore my personal bias. Other than that I really liked the rest of the book.

Only 24% complete

I started reading this ebook and with the many different characters, it quickly became too confusing to keep everyone organized. The book is too wordy in some scenes. At the begining the main characters fell in love after only meeting once, the only interaction between them is to spend a few moments together where she loses her hold on a falcon and it gets killed so she is whipped for this. He leaves and goes off to marry someone else and almost a year later she marries someone else. The book didn't allow the reader to view any dialogue between the two.

I usually don't give up on a book without completing it because I feel that I am going to miss something.

Incredibly Impressive

Karen Maitland is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive and satisfyingly one of the most best informed of writers there is, she writes informatively intelligently and knowledgeably and puts her obtained knowledge into impressive and great stories. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was aided by the great reading and interpretational spin placed in the story by David Thorpe who's brilliant accents brought every character to life. This is a great historical story, full of wit and wickedness, taking you on a journey from Portugal to Iceland. There is a unique aura around Karen Maitland's stories which although, factual in their telling, have a unique mystic to them giving them a fantastical ambience and I loved this story for all of the above reasons. This book is worth every penny of your money.

Slow starter but worth it

Slow to start but brilliant once it picked up, loved the historical content, great performance by the narrator.

Took a long while to get into

I loved the other Karen mainland books and am listening in order of them being written but this one took me longer than the others and yes, I almost gave up. Almost. But it was worth it.

Historical Exciting Terrifying

What did you like best about this story?

It takes you back to the Court of Henry VIII with a vivid sense of the terrors and infighting which was part of being a member of the Royal Household. All jockeying for the King's favour it lead to intrigue and plotting

Which character as performed by Georgina Sutton was your favourite?

Queen Katherine was my favourite

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The point when Queen Katherine thought her upriver journey was going to end at The Tower of London and imprisonment. Instead, she was rowed to Windsor Castle and her sense of relief was almost palpable.

Any additional comments?

This tale illustrated the frailty of all who were under the eye of Henry VIII. His childish rages and cruel ways gave everyone a sense of danger. Savage punishments were carried out and torture was the order of the day. It was a great relief when, as history tells us, Queen Katherine outlived him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very well narrated, with each character very recognisable. Not so many books about Catherine Parr, but very interesting from start to finish, with tension and brilliant portrayal of the times. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Tudor history.

What made the experience of listening to Queen's Gambit the most enjoyable?

Actually, comparing the historical content along that of Lamintations by CJ Sansom. As the book is about Catherine Parr and her marriage to Henry and later to Thomas Seymour. The book of Lamintations is brought in and the difference in treatment was really interesting

Who was your favorite character and why?

None really as none of them was shown much of a character. We know from history that Catherine Parr was of a gentle but strong character but it does not come across so well in this book. I also think that the closeness to her maid was not believable

What about Georgina Suttons performance did you like?

American Heroes

A Call to Arms, the fourth book in the evolving maritime saga of the Cutler family, is American nautical historical fiction at its finest, in the tradition of James Fennimore Cooper and James Nelson. This book concerns the First Barbary War, the crucible in which the U.S. Navy was tested, and as Hammond says, "acted for the first time as a cohesive fighting force capable of formulating and implementing complex strategies while deployed thousands of miles from home waters."

Reading A Call to Arms I had a clearer picture of the conflict, its significance, and the role historical figures like Captain Preble and Stephen Decatur played.

In many ways the book reads like popular nonfiction, except for the imagined dialogue. Hammond provides the needed background seamlessly through well-chosen, poignant details. Another tale in Mr Hammond's history of the early stages of the American Navy. Thorough adherence to history interspersed with his great characters of the Cutler family. Thoroughly enjoyable and one of those books that have you looking up other events to see what happened in the historical framework

This new title in the series is set in plot/time between Husband's novels The Boy I Love and Paper Moon. 1925 - the period between the great wars - Lawrence Hawker, a successful gallery owner stages the first exhibition of works by a painter highly recommended by a mutual friend. The paintings depict wartime portraits of soldiers in the trenches in painful yet tender poses/scenario - some with controversial homo-erotic overtones. Thus sets the stage for the return of Paul Harris, who leaves behind lover and protector Patrick, as he's lured back to his homeland from his North African exile by potential fame and fortune but has to face old ghosts and past misdeeds.

Husband re-introduces characters from The Boy I Love (Paul's father, his son, his ex-in-laws, war-buddies) but also introduces an exciting cast of new characters associated with the art world - Ann (ingénue, model), Edmund (very young, aimless wannabe artist), Joseph (up-and-coming painter who's fighting Edmund for Ann's attentions). Not bad

"I suppose there are isolated cases where the Kanakas don't fully understand all the details, but you must realize, we really are doing them a great favor by bringing them here, away from their lives of sloth, and giving themthe (sic) chance to perform honest, character-building labor."

This novel focuses on events in Queensland, Australia in the late 1880's. The colony is growing by leaps and bounds, but cheap *labor* is needed to keep things running, and a healthy profit can be made by blackbirding -*recruiting* natives into indentured servitude (a rose by any other name is still slavery). Kiri is one of those natives, although her great beauty gets her a life at the high-end whorehouse and not the sugarcane fields. Kiri's story is intertwined with that of Ben-Luk (half English/half Chinese) along with those involved in Stonehouse, a prominent trading house in Queensland.

I did enjoy this book, and I'm glad I read it as I don't know much about Australia's history, but I'm having a hard time trying to categorize it. I can't figure out if this should be more of an action/adventure type of guy book, a straight historical, a romance or something else. I never felt fully engaged in either the story or the characters, just more like a mildly interested observer, and I suspect the abrupt POV switches contributed to that. The Kindle edition I read has some odd formatting issues, plus a few more typos than I care to see - free e-book or not.

A good "popcorn" read

...like popcorn, you pick it up and can't put it down until you've consumed it all... If you like historical fiction, this one will take you to the late 1800's, the time of laborers being "recruited" (or "blackbirded") from the islands to work in the sugar cane plantations of Queensland, Australia. You'll visit gold mines, brickworks, and castles, and you'll be taken aboard ships both as a prisoner and as a privileged passenger.

Who is Thomas Steinbeck???

Thomas Steinbeck? Really? Are you kidding? Not at all! This is the son of the famous John Steinbeck, and he is a chip off the old block. This is the second one of his books I have read, and loved. I can't find my copy of the first one, but it is called something like, Under The Cypress Tree. Both are set in the Monterrey Bay Area, south of San Francisco. Both involve the Chinese culture that has been there even before the "white man" came, and continues today. Thomas Steinbeck grew up in that area (not surprisingly) and had Chinese playmates and best friends. Evidently he also knows something about the darker side of that presence that involves an organized and secretive leadership of the Chinese, operating out of San Franciscoo.

And, like his Dad, he "spins a great yarn". He had me from the get-go. John Steinbeck, himself is one of my favorite authors. I have read everything he wrote except Travels with Charlie, and I currently own that one and have it in my "reading queue". I feared that his son was just trading on his name, but Thomas would be a very readable author, if his name happened to be Tom Smith!

Whether an established fan or a first-time reader, "The Silver Lotus" could well send you back to his prior volumes.

Thomas Steinbeck is now one of my go-to fiction writers. Even while following in the footsteps of his famous father, Mr. Steinbeck has managed to establish his own unique identity and style. Though my rating might have fallen a half-star short of five for lesser authors, I find only a smattering of peccadilloes very easy to overlook.

In future endeavors however, I think he'll need to stretch himself somewhat to avoid the sad old pitfall of self-typecasting. Something tells me his instincts are ahead of the curve in this respect, and his next work will manage to turn some fresh soil for his dedicated readership. This is high-quality fiction from an outstanding author!

Really interesting story; historical fiction that takes place in the late 1880's to early 1900's. Rich with stories of love, hard work, sailing ships of the past, history of Chinese immigrants to Monterey, Ca. and many things that take place during those times.

The Silver Lotus is a charmer!

The story is "old world" and delightful. T. Steinbeck is indeed a good writer. I've savored every word; particularly the descriptions of Chinese customs and wisdom. Captain Hammond has enormous respect for his wife and the workings of her mind. A wonderful marriage....a book that immerses one in the history of Monterrey as well.
