    Pesimo narrador
This is an example of a good book ruined by a terrible narration: without inflection, without changes in tone of voice, without pauses. At the end I bought the printed version to enjoy the story.
    Exclente novela histórica
Excelente novela histórica sobre Carlos II (el hechizado) que mezcla aventuras, alquimia y horrores de la inquisición española a finales del siglo XVII.

Enthralling and adventurous, The Pioneer is Book 3 in the Alford Saga, a series chronicling 200 years of Canadian history, as seen through the eyes of a settlers family.

Arriving at last in Montreal, Jim is driven by starvation into a back-breaking job constructing the Victoria Bridge. Jim finds lodgings with an Irish widow in Griffintown, and falls in love.

    Enjoyable listen
I feel that this story is a very warm, gentle and authentic portrayal of early Canadian settlers and the hardships ensured by them. I enjoyed listening to the voice of Paul Almond as he told the story with such love for his characters (ancestors).

    Not boring, not exciting
Story line and characters good. Appeared to be written in a juvenile manner. Very short story: only takes an hour to read. Will not read anything from this author again.
It Truly Was The Golden Age
This book by L. Ron Hubbard (yes, THAT L. Ron Hubbard) represents the Golden Age of pulp fiction. The US was beginning to turn the corner during the Great Depression and storm clouds were rising over Europe. Piracy on the High Seas and in the Gulf of Mexico was rife and the Coast Guard fought to protect our shores and perform sea rescues. Into this arena steps Hubbard's hero, as only a pulp fiction hero can be: handsome, brave, and always fighting the good fight.
It may be difficult to live in an age before GPSs and instant computer access to everything; but these issues never existed in the Golden Age and we never miss them during our "willing suspension of disbelief."
Return with me now to those days of yore as we follow this tale of a hero and heroine as they fight pirates and and misguided senior officers.
A masterful story told by a master story teller.
    Warren
I love L Ron Hubbard but....
His Mission Earth series is one of the funniest, cleverest, subtley (is that a word??) brilliant things I ever read. And it drives me crazy when people "blame" him for Scientology. By his own admission he created it as a joke--much like the clothing animals group did in the 60's--to see how many stupid people would fall for it. All that aside, The Phantom Patrol is a pulp series that may appeal to nostalgia buffs who like cornball stories with lots of "golly" and "swell". I can only take it in small doses but no doubt they were very popular with young male readers, in their time.
    Fun read
It is fun to read some of the old pulp fiction stories. Lots of adventure.
I was a little surprised when i first saw the L. Ron Hubbard name, what with his later writing.
Not at all what AI expected. If looking for a quick reading adventure yarn, give Hubbard's pulps a try.
A nice addition to the books is the built in glossary that comes up while reading the story. Click on the highlighted word for a definition to fit the context, then hit back and return to the story, with the just-looked-at word at the beginning of the page, at least on the original KF.
    slow and silly
like the picture on the cover more like an 1920's Dick Foran movie....I didn't finish it...saving it for the last .....

    Good read!
I enjoyed this book very much but was very disappointed to learn that some key people in the book are fictional. Otherwise, it was very good.
    a poorly written letdown
This was not a novel about the Duchess of Windsor but the early life of Wallis Simpson before she became infamous .
It ended just as we were getting to the interesting bit !
The writers style is not compelling (and poor grammar) and I found myself speed reading pages to try to get to the momentum..it arrived with the last sentence of the last page
    Another look at Wallis Simpson
I loved reading about Wallis and how she developed from her childhood to adulthood and how her background and people and events in her life shaped her thinking. You read so much about her life with "David" but this really explored how her childhood was and what affected her thinking and molded her choices in life. It was an informative read.
Excellent, Easy Reading Glimpse Into Wallis Simpson's Early Life
I've always been a bit fascinated with Wallis Simpson and was eager to read her story. This book is easy to read - flowing easily (with a few slower portions) perhaps as a historical novel might.
I have a far better idea of what her life was like and she may really have been but I wished for more. I had hoped that there would be more information about her love and life with Edward but it felt like this part of her life was short shrifted . None-the-less this book was a fascinating look at the woman won the heart of a king - a real life fairy tale - the book just ended too soon.
    Well worth the read!
    Fascinating readin
I have always been interested in Wallis' life especially because of my mortar-in-law's interest. I enjoyed the book immensely but I guess the truth of her sexuality will never be really know and has gone with her to the grave. No doubt, Edward's love for her was very true and strong

"The Question I am most asked is this: Is this True? I have to tell you that it is fiction. Do you understand? You will find out why...." - Will Bevis.
Originally titled The Greatest Civil War Lie Ever Told, listen to this audiobook and decide for yourself whether it is fact or fiction. An alarming tale of deceit, danger and betrayal both during and after the Civil War: Is it fact or fiction? What appears at first to be one lie expands into a far reaching expose of conspiracy, deception, and threats on many levels.
Written by Will Bevis as the first of at least four books on the subject it will grab your attention from the first page and not only keep your attention but will pique your curiosity and raise questions in your mind as to whether or not the vast majority of Americans have yet heard the truth about the most tragic period in U.S. History and the consequences which affect us all even today.

Hardship and sadness of the times of the times
Where does Dreams of Joy rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    In the top 10
Which character as performed by Janet Song was your favorite?
Pearl and Joy were both amazing.
    Any additional comments?
A interesting look at the times ,lies and hardships faced by the chineese people during
the late 40s and early 50s
The novel shows the strength of bonds , love & ties over the decades.
    Wow
Very rarely write reviews, but just had to. This has got to be in my top 5 books of all time. Expertly written... empathy but not sentimental; exciting but realistic; and really ignited an interest in the era for me. Enjoyed Shanghai Girls very much, so downloaded this sequel, and this has blown its predecessor out of the water! I know some fellow book club members found Shanghai Girls a little too brutal, and if you are sensitive then this book is 'worse' and may not be for you, but the issues are important and sensitively dealt with. A big well done and thankyou to Lisa See. I will always remember this book.
    a fantastic story!
What did you like most about Dreams of Joy?
I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I loved that everything was not given away in the beginning of the book. The author gave us enough description to understand the characters, then gave us more details of events as the book went on. It kept me hooked!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dreams of Joy?
Of course, the ending was the most memorable. (I don't want to go into too many details. No need to spoil it for everyone!)
Which scene did you most enjoy?
When Joy sent managed to get a letter through to her mother, so that she could be rescued.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I must admit I felt a bit naive about not knowing all the troubles that happened in China during Mao's reign. My heart wrenched every time the author described the way the chinese were lied to into thinking communism was the way forward.
    Any additional comments?
I didn't listen to the first novel in this series before listening to Dreams of Joy, but I didn't think it made a difference. The story is self contained.
Another charming look at communism in a very perso
What did you like most about Dreams of Joy?
It taught me about China and the ways of other cultures in another time.
What did you like best about this story?
    The complex relationships.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
There were a few very disturbing scenes in the village.
Outstanding I account Most absorbing reading .
This was a riverting account of life for the ordinary people of the countryside in communist China during the great famines of the fifties.
