Fun, positive, entertaining

This is my first exposure to Freddie Ramos and his wonderful shoes. This early chapter book has just the amount of text in the vernacular that will engage the young reader, especially boys, and a sprinkling of pen drawings.

I love the positive attitude portrayed in the character of Freddie Ramos and his desire to be helpful. But this is not an overtly sweet, do good to others book. No, this is a fun book about a young boy who perceives he has super powers from the wonderful wristband (previously given to him by his friend, Mr. Vaslov) and his Zapato shoes.

If you've every truly watched a small child when they have a brand new pair of colorful sneakers, especially those with flashing lights, you know the personality lift the shoes seem to impart. Well, Mr. Vaslov has previously given Freddie a pair of purple Zapatos and now they are too small. Almost magically, Mr. Vaslov brings a new pair to Freddie just before Freddie and his mother leave for a trip to New York.

His adventures in New York with his "superpowers" are fun to read. The story flows smoothly. There is a tiny sprinkling of Spanish words or phrases which enriches the reading. Gently the words are re-said in English in the flow of the text without appearing to be "teachy."

I'd love to see the entire set of these positive, well done books in elementary libraries across the country.

One of our favorite books!

My son loves the book. We discovered it at our local library and then had to buy our own copy. My son is the smallest in his class and this book gives a great example of how being small isn't so bad :) Book was delivered fast and in perfect condition.

It's a great story and a lesson

Think Big! by Nancy Carlson

This book is much loved by my 3 year old. The main character is a frog that is smaller than his friends. The grown ups overlook him and his peers pick on him due to his size. He uses a positive attitude to have better interactions with everyone.

Completely Adorable

This book is absolutely adorable in every way! Both my 7-year-old AND 9-year-old love it! It is clever, cute, fun and presents a clever way for you to "think outside the box." It is about an adorable frog who finds a way to celebrate his differences and to see himself as both lovable and capable. After reading this book, we smiled as we thought about how adorable the main character was and it provided an impromtu moment for me to say, "Now look how adorable the main character is and that is so how cute you are to me!" It gives children the perspective that differences aren't always good or bad. All that matters in the end is how big you can think. And that in the end will determine how high your heart can soar!

A favorite of my preschooler

My 4 year old absolutely loves these books! I read them aloud to him, but an early reader could also read it themselves. I'd recommend this for any child with an interest in tools, age 7 and under.

This book is a good way for children to learn about the hammer and how it is used ...

If you look at the picture of the head of a hammer it might be hard to guess what it is. When you see one of the whole hammer, most kids know what it is. If you take a look at the tool belt you probably will know that "tools help us do jobs." The pliers, screwdriver, and hammer all "make jobs easier." The pictures show the hammer's handle and tell you to "hold on tight" to it. You will also see the head of it and will learn that it "pounds nails into wood." If you've ever used one you know that it keeps things from falling apart.

If you bend a nail, how do you take it out? You can see that it has a claw and that "pulls nails out of wood." Carpenters and builders use them when they work to make and build things. Can you think of anything that you have seen someone use a hammer for? You can see someone working on the railing of their tree house using one. There's also another boy who is smiling as he works on a project. He is wearing safety glasses to protect his eyes.

This book is a good way for children to learn about the hammer and how it is used. The photographs are very clear and not only show how the hammer is used, but also names its parts. This beginning nonfiction book is one in the series "Tools at Work" which discuss the hammer, level, saw, screwdriver, wrench, and pliers. I do like the stress on safety measures as many kids enjoy using and learning about tools. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a "Safety First" section, and one that discusses levers and fulcrums. There are additional complimentary downloadable resources on the publishers website.

This is an excellent overview of how mountainous animals have adapted in order to live in their environment!

A habitat is where plants and animals live. If you look through the mountainous areas in the pages of this book, you will see many animals who live there. A small mountain goat can be seen adeptly scampering up the side of a rocky, mountainous ledge by using the rough pads on the bottom of his feet. The pads on his feet are an adaptation that allows him to climb jagged peaks that many animals cannot manage. Many birds and animals such as the deer also have adaptations that help them to survive in the mountains.

The Pika will use his long teeth to nibble at and "bite off plants" so they can "save them to eat during the winter." The golden eagle has very sharp talons so he can easily swoop down and catch his meal. You can easily see that the shaggy "yaks grow thick fur coats" that will "keep them warm in the winter." There are several other mountain animals that have adapted. Among the ones you meet in this book will be the snow leopard, big horn sheep, and the mountain lion.

This is an excellent overview of how mountainous animals have adapted in order to live in their environment. The young, emergent reader will be able to take a look at a vibrant photograph on each page and read a simple sentence. More difficult words are highlighted in bold throughout the text and explained in the glossary. For example in the sentence "Golden eagles have sharp talons," the word "talons" is highlighted. In the back of the book is a paragraph that discusses the adaptations mountain goats have made. Additionally there is an index, a glossary, and some "Fun Facts." This is one is a series of six books in the "Animal Adaptations" series, a series you may wish to consider to introduce your young students to interesting nonfiction topics.

Another GREAT book!

My kids and I LOVE these book by Brian P. Cleary. He has the most ingenious way of making learning about grammar and math fun. You can not go wrong with his books.

This is an excellent book to learn about the lake habitat and how animals have adapted to their environment!

A lake is a body of water that is a habitat. A habitat is "where plants and animals live." You can see a turtle sunning himself on an old rotting log that has fallen in a lake. Animals that live in lakes "have special adaptations" in order to help them live in lakes. If you look at a fish they have fins for swimming and gills that "let them breathe underwater." If you look at the feet of a duck you can easily see that they have webbed feet so they can "paddle through the water." If you look at the curly shaped shell of the snail you realize that it is used for its protection.

Birds also have adaptations that help them to survive. The gulls have "sharp, curved bills to eat fish." The unusual looking pelican has a pouch under its bill so it can carry fish. Beavers use their "sharp front teeth to cut branches" they use to build dens. In this book you will learn how herons adapt, how water striders are able to "skate on top of the water," the unusual way an alligator snapping turtle uses its tongue, how clams use their shells for protection and camouflage, why water boatmen carry air bubbles, how the leeches' color protects them, you'll learn a bit about tadpoles, the webbed feet of frogs, and what beavers do with their tails when they are threatened.

This is an excellent book to learn about the lake habitat and how animals have adapted to their environment. The numerous full-color photographs are very appealing and will draw even the most reluctant reader through these pages. The large print, simple sentences, and accompanying photographs make this book perfect for the emergent reader. Difficult words such as "adaptations" are highlighted in bold throughout the text. I especially liked the variety of animals presented in their natural habitat, the lake, in these pages. In the back of the book are some "Fun Facts," an index, and a glossary.

Perfect for my Transitional Kindergarten class

I love teaching the amazing steps each living thing goes through to prepare for winter â migration is one of them. My young students enjoyed the pictures and I appreciate the simple, accurate text. I was very please to find this book to add to my personal library.

Not what I expected

Given the title, I expected that this little book might talk more about grass, farms, and a natural milk production process. I had hoped to use this book as a resource in a elementary school unit on "grasslands." However, there is only one picture of grass and only one picture of a complete cow.

Instead, the book is very focused on machines. Even the page with the title "A farmer milks the cow" shows only a close-up photo of a cow's udder attached to a milking machine. There are no farmers in this book. I realize that this is the truth of industrial milk production in the US, but the book seems mis-titled. A better title might be something like "Modern Milk Production" or "How Milk Gets to You." The inclusion of "grass" gives the wrong impression as this book is very much about what machines do to milk before we drink it, and only a little about how milk is actually made. (And to be absolutely truthful, of course, very few milk cows even eat grass anymore - they eat corn - but the book doesn't talk about this at all. )

Additionally, I don't know what Ms. Taus-Bolstad's affiliations are but several of the photos come from the USDA and stock photo agencies. Visually, this is not a very interesting book for children.

I expected something very different when I placed my order.
