If you look closely at lizards or fish you will notice that they have something that called scales that protect their bodies or protect them from predators. These are "pieces of hard skin on the outside of an animal's body." Many children have owned goldfish or have seen them in fish tanks. Their scales are easy to see. If you've ever gone fishing and caught a fish with scales you may be familiar with how they feel. Snakes and lizards, which are reptiles, also have scales. Most reptiles live in hot habitats or homes and "their scales keep them from drying out."

Scales have different textures. For example, if you look at the photographs of many animals in this book you'll notice that some are "thick and rough," some are soft, while others are "flat and smooth." Some scales are meant to protect the animal by being hard or spiky. It's difficult for another animal to injure another one when it cannot bite through its skin. Some scales make an animal difficult to spot and attack. The survival of many animals is dependent on their scales.

This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal science and body coverings. As a beginning science book the print is large and unfamiliar words such as "scales" are printed in bold lettering and defined in the glossary. Each page has a large, clearly defined photograph that identifies the topic being discussed. For example, when the statement "Snakes shed their old skin and scales," there is a colorful photograph of a snake molting. In the back of the book is an index, a pictorial glossary, a section on how and why "snakes need to shed their old scales and skin (three photographs are included), and a two-page section about scale facts. Very brief, but informative book. There are only a few pages, but it's on my second graders level and is educational.

From Flower to Honey is a great starter book for children on the nature of honeybees and how honey is accomplished.

This is an excellent book that details how the nectar of flowers turn into honey ...

If you've ever seen a honey bear container at the store full of honey, you might just wonder how it got from a flower blossom into that container. Every spring when flowers open up "There is a sweet juice called nectar inside each flower." It isn't long before you'll see bees buzzing from one flower to the next. A bee's tongue is like a straw and they simply suck up the nectar. When they finish, they go home to their hives to give it to the other bees.

When the bees get the nectar they put it into a "honeycomb" that is made of wax. The honeycomb has holes and the "Bees fill each hole with nectar" and wait for it to dry and turn into honey. Many of these hives are man made. Once the honey is made the beekeeper "takes the honeycomb out of the hive." You'll learn about the special clothing the beekeeper has to wear, how the honey is removed from the honeycomb, why he drains the honey, you'll see it being poured into jars, you'll finally see it on a store shelf, and will see a little girl pouring some on waffles.

This is an excellent book that details how the nectar of flowers turn into honey. This is a very basic, but high interest, beginning nonfiction book that newly independent readers will enjoy. Bold full page photographic illustrations follow a titled paragraph. For example, when we learn about how a bee uses its straw-like tongue, the title is "Bees drink nectar." In the back of the book is an index and glossary. This is one title in the series, "Start to Finish." There are free downloadable educational resources on the publisher's website.

This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal biology and science

If you look closely at some animals they aren't covered in fur, but rather in shells. Armadillos, crabs, clams, and turtles are all examples of them. A "shell is the hard outer covering on an animal's body." If you've ever seen a turtle peeking out of its shell as it walks along a log you can easily see the difference between its skin and its body. There are different kinds of shells. If you've been on a beach and collected some, many are smooth, while other "shells are bumpy."

One important reason that animals have shells is to keep them safe and help them hide from predators. If you look under the coral in one of the pictures in this book a "turtle is hard to see" because it blends in with the ocean floor. In this book you'll learn that there are many different sized shells, how tortoise shells grow as it grows, how some animals shed their shells, and you'll learn that "hermit crabs do not grow their own shells."

This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal biology and science. Nicely written informational book with large size illustrations. Easy to read. The children loved looking at the pictures. The pictures helped them formulate questions.

Five children can be seen looking at us in a photograph. They are all smiling as they sit or stand on the roots of a tree that are above ground. When you look at the diagram that show plant parts you learn that "roots are parts of plants." The job of roots are to help the plant grow. Once a seed is planted the roots grow down into the soil. Once the roots are fully grown, they help a plant stay into the ground. They help "plants get water from the soil" and "send water to the plant through a stem."

Two photographs in this book show roots that are very large, but if you are able to see the roots of flowers most of them are short. The roots of water lilies keep them from moving around a pond or a lake. In hot areas "desert plants store water in their roots." You might be surprised that you can actually eat roots. In this book you will see roots that you can eat, including radishes, carrots, and beets. Have you ever seen roots that climb? You'll see an example of one in this book.

This is an introductory plant science book for the young student that explores stems. The print in this book is large and there is typically one or two short sentences on each page accompanied by one large, pertinent photograph. There is a clear, concise diagram that shows the parts of a plant and shows roots as they grow from a seed to a flowering plant. If there is an advanced word such as "desert" it is printed in dark, bold letters and defined in the glossary. In the back of the book is an index, a pictorial glossary, and a section about root facts. This is one book in the plant science series, Let's Look at Plants (First Step Nonfiction), an excellent beginning series you may wish to consider adding to your library or classroom shelves.

Recommended by our daughter's Montessori preschool teacher

The teacher for our daughter's Montessori preschool (18 months to three years) mentioned that the kids had been reading the various color books in this series while learning to use the bathroom independently. The text is short, great for a toddler's quickly growing vocabulary. We ordered a few for home, and our daughter (just over two years old) practically memorized them. In fact, she loves them so much that I've gotten a bunch more and she gets excited about each one. Highly recommend.

Okay, with one notable exception

The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the overall message is good, but there is a page that reads, "Accept hugs from people who care about you. And hug them back, because HUGS JUST FEEL GOOD!" I teach my toddler that she doesn't have to accept affection if she doesn't want it, even from family members, so this book was not for us.

This book is exactly about its title. Author/Illustrator Nancy Carlson uses kid-friendly, adorable illustrations and very cheerful text to help your child learn self-esteem (ex. So make yourself happy by looking in the mirror and shouting: "I AM COOL!") Nancy gives great ideas about taking good care of your body to stay happy, ask for help when you need it (like when you are dealing with a bully), etc. This book will become a classic for your child when they need a mental boost to lift their spirits and allow happiness back into their life. I give this book a high-five for the good feelings it gave ME!

A happy little book

My 2 year old loves this book! A simple message and cute illustrations. It is a good reminder to parents as well, to think happy!
