Publisher's Summary:
When a Puritan miss discovers the joys of Christmas, love's as near as the mistletoe.
The Davenport sisters were alone, without even a dour-faced maid to supervise their strict puritanical devotions, until the elder, flame-haired Gillian boldly decided it was high time they let their hair down. Now, with the help of a kindly relation, the two daring misses exchange their somber attire for modish gowns and hairstyles that would surely give their parents apoplexy. But the best is yet to come: plum pudding, eggnog, carols, and a most breathtaking tree.
The Davenport sisters revel in the rituals of Christmas - and in the selection of handsome gentlemen who decorate the festivities. But when Gillian is caught under the mistletoe by Lord Ranger Marden, she discovers things her mother never dreamed of telling her.

Totally enjoyable!
I enjoyed everything about this book. The descriptions and fun-filled activities at the home of Sir John and Lady Harrington all sound so warm, loving and appealing. Sledding, skating, baking, dancing, games, cuddling Lady Harrington's grandbaby, etc... Such an amazing contrast to the Misses Davenport's cruel and austere home of their parents. It is also contrasted to the cold and formal atmosphere of the Harrington's neighbors, the Tenby's. The Tenby's are having a house party and their guests keep sneaking over to the Harrington's to enjoy the lively company and fun atmosphere. Jilly and Mandy Davenport are gratefuly enjoying their time with the Harrington's and regretting that it will end when they return to their parents. Unless love rescues them?
In addition to being a great story, Chesney also includes interesting facts about Regency Christmas traditions including historical origins, recipes, games and songs. I'd call this a must read for Chesney fans.
Girls' First Christmas
2.5
I have no complaints about Ms. Beaton's excellent writing style and the general quality of her prose. But I think this should have been a novella. It dragged on, and eventually I really didn't care about the Misses Davenport or their rascally antagonists and the men they were all vying for. It was too long, considering there really wasn't all that much going on, plot-wise.
A cozy Christmas romance
A lovely little fairy tale with two Cinderella-sisters managing to escape their severe, oppressive parents, find love, and celebrate Christmas for the first time. A fairly typical Recency romance, with no twists or surprises, but still entertaining. Charming touches and vivid detail move the story along while showcasing English Christmas traditions.
Very amusing and enjoyable romantic romp in 19th century England
Very amusing and enjoyable romantic romp in 19th century England. Unpredictable and predictable plot twists, powerful heroes and penniless twin heroines turn the manners and mores of gentry and nobility on its scandalized ears.
A very Regency English Christmas
What a perfect read for Christmas! Not only was there a lovely tale of 2 sisters, who were so strictly raised by Puritan parents, that they were constantly punished to beat the devil from them. Christmas was considered pagan, and jewelry, fancy dress, dancing and fun in general were all signs of evil. Both girls end up spending the winter months with Lord and Lady Harrington, who turn out to be the exact opposite of their parents.
