Title: What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?

Subtitle: Our Greatest Generation, Book 1

Author: Joshua Groomes

Narrator: Ron Welch

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 47 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-17-16

Publisher: Joshua B. Groomes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Gene Fitzgerald is 19 years old when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. He drops out of college and hurriedly enlists to do his patriotic duty, only to discover that the military is not made up of heroes like John Wayne and Gary Cooper. Boot camp is an eye-opener and Staff Sergeant Thomas's heavy handed tactics bond the flamboyantly Italian Sportelli, the timid Cannady, Gene, and backwoods 'stiller' Jeb into a rock solid team as they frustrate his attempts to turn them into model soldiers. Boot Camp is an adventure the four of them manage to survive, and they find themselves aboard a troop ship on their way to 'the front'.

War is not boot camp. Gene, as squad leader, finds that death is all too real, all too ugly, and doesn't only happen to the enemy or to soldiers, for that matter. But even on the battlefield, there is humor. Jeb's skill with 'corn mash' and his backpack still come in handy in the trenches as his generosity brings in some handy aid from grateful recipients of his gifts in the fierce battles they face.

Slowly, the teenagers who stumbled off that Greyhound bus into the wee-hours darkness of boot camp become men, matured by the sights, the battles, the personal encounters of war. In the face of tanks and overwhelming odds, men find bravery within them, not the bravery of the Hollywood screen but the from-the-gut bravery of men faced with the need to survive and to help their buddies survive. Squad Leader is a huge responsibility, and Gene needs all of his skills and reflexes to keep himself and his men alive.

The book begins with the humor of those teens who face off against the military authority and win, and as the story unfolds, we see them grow up, shaped by the hard lessons of the battlefield but managing to preserve the essence of the innocent teens who signed up for war in a fervor of patriotism. War has changed them, but it has certainly not destroyed them.

A powerful coming of age story that blends the humor that can only exist on the battlefield as well as the real horrors of that war, this book will appeal to veterans and young adults curious about WWII, both.

Very good book

This is a very well told story of the average dogface in the heights of World War II. The chapters dealing with boot camp and making of new friends especially touches home. Mr. Grooms tells it just the way it was and the way I recall it being. I very much enjoyed the Book and would think that any ex-service man would like it as well. Very pleasurable reading. May I add my personal THANK YOU to all Vets both past and present. You are the reason that we can enjoy the liberties we have today.. THANK YOU again...

I commend the author on this fine well written story

This is the kind of book that grips your imagination and takes you on a journey with the brave warriors from the very beginning of being soldier through training then all the very interesting experiences that follow through heart ship, sorrows and joy.

The book is loaded with information about WW 11.

I salute the uniformed men high and low rank, old and young.

Five Stars

This was such a fun story!!

Wham Glamorous! Glitter Rock Fun!

Have you ever wished you could step back in time and watch the Glitter Rock scene unfold in 1970's Hollywood (spearheaded by DJ Rodney Bingenheimer)? If so, this is the story that will put you right there! Put on Ziggy Stardust or Electric Warrior and go for a ride into a the decadent world of teenagers Jemmie and Dara. I give this an easy 5 stars and if somebody doesn't option this story they are idiots! This read like a movie and should be made into one! I am looking forward to more great stories from this author!

Fabulous little book!

This is a fun book of short stories about the 70's rock scene on Sunset Blvd. I love this era of music and the author really nails the sight and sounds of the times. You feel like you're a fly on the wall during those wild nights with these two girls. A must for anyone who longs for that glamorous rock world of the 70's, especially fans of David Bowie! If you liked "Almost Famous", this book is for you.

short but very very sweet

Such a crazy romp through the night . Wham Glam delights with its time capsule of fashion and teen extremes. If you lived through this period it's a great trip and if you didn't - your loss. A definite read - short but very very sweet.
