Critic Reviews:
"The author's detailed descriptive passages paint vivid images of a Washington fruit farm and its animal and human inhabitants. The descriptions are colorful, factual, and informative....The single outbursts of profanity in one scene and the vivid description of the killing of one animal and the maiming of two others by a moving machine in another need to be considered when offering this to young audiences. Author and narrator Ramon Royal Ross speaks clearly and changes voices for each character. There are no sound effects or background noises to distract from the flow of the story." Prune!
This book was written by a dear friend of mine, and I knew it had been out of print for a very long time.
On a whim, I tried to find it on Amazon.com and was quite surprised to find a very good used copy that had
been in a library. It's a great story! I also recommend Dr. Ross' Harper & Moon story. It is still on school
library bookshelves.
This book ruined my life
Way back in 1987 or so I was in the 4th grade in San Diego, CA. Every year, all the kids in the 4th grade got to go whale watching on a boat of the San Diego coast. I, however, was in the "advanced" class. We didn't go anywhere the day the other 4th graders went whale watching, we had normal school that day because we had a different field trip planned. Not long after we went to "The Author's Conference". You could hear the capital letters whenever my teacher said it. The author we got to meet was none other than Ramon Royal Ross, author of "Prune".
Our teacher had read us Prune and asked us to come up with questions to ask Mr. Ross. He briefly answered out questions and then proceeded to tell us how awful our lives were because we played with manufactured toys and video games and when he was a boy in Walla Walla you had to make your own fun by whittling sticks and getting bug bites and such.
So, when all the other kids got to go spend a warm, Spring day on a boat out on the beautiful open water enjoying God's most majestic creatures, we smart kids had the privilege of listening to an old man who had written a book about an anthropomorphic prune tell us how spoiled we were and how our childhoods were being wasted.
That's the day I became a cynical, misanthropic wretch and learned that intelligence is really a handicap.
Prune jumpstarts children's imagination...
As a group of 8 year olds, my classmates and I had the attention span of a swirling cloud of gnats. This book, however, managed to capture our attention as we wondered whether or not the unlikely heroic figure of a fallen fruit would survive until the next day. We hung on our teacher's every word as she told tales of muskrats and magpies in a world where the impossible became real. Now, eleven years later, I still credit my love for the realm of reading to the jumpstart that Prune gave to my imagination--and certainly to many others. To the author, and to my teacher (who read this book aloud to a group of antsy eight year olds), I give my thanks for the doors they opened with a little book simply known as Prune.
