Fresh new voice and character

I really enjoyed this Australian crime novel from a debutant author with clear storytelling talent. GOOD MONEY, touted as the first Stella Hardy novel, is one of those books that's good across the board - good characters, a good crime plotline, interesting prose that's smooth but with enough of a unique voice to seem fresh, and a well-evoked contemporary setting (both the physical place, and some of the social issues entwined with that place and the people living their lives there).

There's also a really nice vein of humour running throughout the book. Some of the themes and events in GOOD MONEY are very dark, but Green does a great job balancing things with humour and quirky wee things here and there, so it never gets too bleak, fatiguing, or depressing.

Stella Hardy is one of those people full of good intentions, and wanting to do the right thing (even though she feels jaded and all out of empathy at times), but who often manages to get herself in tricky situations. She's a bit of a trouble-magnet.

Although Hardy comes across as a bit gruff at the start, I found her very engaging overall, and was easily drawn in to follow her along as the social worker looks into a murder in one of her client families, as well as the disappearance of her neighbour. She's a good central character, with Green drip-feeding us more information about her background throughout the book. We get a good sense of a rounded person, full of complexities and a variety of experiences that have shaped her.

Green also did a very good job with the settings, capturing a variety of places that make up modern-day Australia, from stratified living and increasing multiculturalism in urban areas, to the changing face of country life in a nation where farmers and farmers were once the backbone of the economy. Now, it is the massive mining industry that drives money flow in Australia, but may be fool's gold.

Overall, GOOD MONEY is very good debut, that introduces both a fresh new voice in antipodean crime writing, and an engaging heroine who has the potential to be a strong series character.

I look forward to whatever comes next from JM Green and Stella Hardy.

Mysterious House Burning

This is the continued story of Ellen and Brian, working as partners in a private Missing Personâs agencyâwith one other team member added in this story. Brian found them another computer geek by the name of Alistair Stockard. Brianâs plan is to start working out in the field with Ellen and leave Alistair to work in the office.

In this story the team is hired by the sister-in-law of the missing personâa person who supposedly had died in a fire. The problem is that the missing person, Charles Dugan, a former wealthy top banker, does not want to be found. And a lot of people want himâgood guys and bad guys both. Itâs just a matter of time before someone finally gets him, but who will it be?

I never quit liked Charles even though he was the person that Ellen and Brian were looking for. It was hard for me to understand why he would let everyone believe him dead, especially family. I could not figure out his motive for this at first. Later it made more sense. I also had a hard time with why he gave up his banking job, which was a sure thing, for a life of gambling that was rather iffy. I guess it all comes down to addiction.

The mystery concerning this story has to do with the burning down of the houseâyou will just have to read to find out.

I felt disgust when reading about Ellenâs mother and Colin the step-father. Abusive men very seldom change & normally sons of abusive mothers are outraged by the step-fatherâs behavior and want to beat the crap out of the step-father. So it was a little puzzling how Jim, Ellenâs brother, went from being angry toward Colin to being forgiving and understanding. I just was not buying that Colin had changed his abusive ways. Especially since Ellenâs mother wound up in a coma & Colin was no where around when she went to the hospital. I hope in the next book Colin gets his come-uppingsâbecause he is not going to change. One of the big differences between Britainâs laws vs. American laws concerns domestic violence; it is the law now in the US that if a law officer witnesses any domestic abuse or signs of domestic abuse, he has to arrest the perpetratorâno matter what the victim saysâand nothing the victim says will allow the charges to be dropped. It use to be that the victim here could refuse to press charges but not any more because the officer can press charges.

I was frustrated when I read how the police just stood by and let Dugan and the bad guys verbally duked it out and not do anything.

Disappointing

Detective K. Burke and Detective Luc Moncrief were in New York and on the trail of murder, missing paintings and mystery. After the death of a high society woman in highly suspicious circumstances, K. Burke noticed the paintings that had been on the wall had gone. When it turned out that this wasnât the first time it had happened, links began to appear.

As the investigation took them to Paris, the intrigue deepenedâ but what would they find as the city of love prepared for Christmas?

The Christmas Mystery wasnât one of the best of the BookShots novellas by James Patterson that Iâve read. Insipid and with very little mystery, it also seemed like the author was trying to show Detective Luc Moncrief in the same light as Hercule Poirot. A weak imitation in my opinion.

Alex Walker, Detective - glad to have him on your side and he's easy to look at!

Good story. This is a short story continuing in the life of a character we met in Love's Providence, written by the same author under a different name. Alex is a compelling fellow, has his feelings wrapped up pretty tight due lots of past hurt. But, while semi shut down in the feelings department, he is fully in control of his law enforcer persona. When we first met him in LP, he was bike cop, but now he's made detective. Author seems very familiar with the life of a cop, which lends a credible air to the story. Can't wait to read the Kill Code to see how Alex fares!

Two Men, Similar Incidents

AlexAnder is heading to Homeland Security and this is his last actions before that.

He's hunting a father who's killed his wife and taken their five year old son. It resonates with Alex as he'd had to kill his insane ex-wife to stop her from doing the same to his girl friend.

Tense moments as he quietly talks with the man as SWAT gathers.

Well written story.

good suspense

Pace was good and interesting characters. Suspense increased towards the end and a few twists added to the enjoyment. The end was wrapped up although a few loose ends were concluded on almost a bit too conveniently. Overall though a good read

I have enjoyed reading these novels by Eva Almstädt set in the North Sea area. It is good German practice for me and a fun read as well

Great Series - in German

I have read the entire series and loved every single book. I got started on the series as I was looking for German Krimi's. If you like Krimi's, in German I highy recommend it. Just be sure to read the books in order.

Idid not enjoy this novel as much

I have read several novels from this author however this one did not seem to get to the core of the story for a while which was boring I put it down several times before finishing the novel

I really appreciated the author's description of the afterlife - the potential for difficulty in letting go. There are several scenes of characters attempting to process the grief of losing their high school aged children that spoke true. Mr. Nowak went beyond the stereotypes to make each character's processing believable if not always sympathetic.
