Members Reviews:
A terrific listen
I really enjoyed this book and reading and got caught
up in the characters and plot right away. Moving from
one time to another in the same place works seamlessly
and is always intriguing. Would heartily recommend;
anything by Jonathan Coe is entertaining.
well researched page turner,
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Brings factual reality to life with Narcolepsy. Well crafted, gripping novel. Lyrical language delivered brilliantly on audible. Loved every minute.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All characters were well crafted and realistic. No favourites.
What about Simon Shepherds performance did you like?
Understated with the right amount of light and shade. Easy to listen to. Character voices well played without being over dramatic.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, both. I have Narcolepsy. I loved the way Coe linked factual content to fiction creating a believable reality with which I could identify. I almost felt part of this fictional 'world'. I had a profound reaction to much of the content. Listening to this alone, whilst driving, I found myself shouting out at plot twists as they unfolded.
Any additional comments?
Brilliant work of fiction which integrates factual information on sleep disorders. I could see this as a high brow TV Drama.
Mediocre story and woeful narration
What would have made The House of Sleep better?
I'm not sure whether the woeful narration marred what might have been a reasonably good book, but the overall experience was so bad as to warrant my writing this warning to potential purchasers. With so many accomplished narrators reading far superior books, why buy The House of Sleep? Well, the story is quite intriguing I suppose, but I was just incapable of overcoming the narrator's poor performance. Not only is his voice dreary and lifeless beyond belief but his occasional forays into accents are appalling. Give this one a miss!
What could Jonathan Coe have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Spend more time looking for a decent narrator.
What didnt you like about Simon Shepherds performance?
Dreary and lifeless
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Interesting subject matter and use of language
The House of Sleep
I found this a disjointed and difficult story to follow, I found the characters hard to bond with! Maybe I didn't try hard enough to get into it, but it wasn't a listen that I had empathy with in the way it was presented.
