"One of the few horror writers who can truly make the flesh creep." (Sunday Express)

Good story, but not so horrifying
I had quite high expectations for this book, that's probably why I was a little disappointed. The story is, without a doubt, original and a bit addictive, but it didn't give me the chills. I hoped for a good old horror story, but it was more a description of a tragedy with quotes from different books about telekinesis.
But don't get me wrong, it was worth the listen! I love King, but it wasn't as horrifying as some of his other stories.
    Fantastic book!
As soon as i started listening i didn't stop until it was over. The charactures were so real. I've never ciried so much during a book.
    Worth a read but!!!
I would recommend other King books such as 'Shining' because this story is a bit too basic and there aren't really any high stakes or but Stephen King makes up for this with amazing characters and makes you feel like you are a student or a journalist inside this High School. The narrator was great and a perfect voice and brings a good vibe to the story
    much better than the movies
I'm a real lover of the writings of Stephen king. this is a good read but a little confusing to begin with until you realise that the reader is reading extracts from different books based on the event of carrie, along with the actually story. the jump back and forth becomes quiet smooth though as the story progresses. this is not a scary story but very well written and even though it is one of his first books it still stands the test of time. king is not afraid to speak of topics that others might shy away from and it lends strength to his writing.
    Much better than the film.
Where does Carrie rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Top five out of all audiobook listened to so far.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Carrie herself. trapped in the body of an adolescent girl, tortured by her estranged mother and school friends who as we all know can be horrible in themselves.
What does Sissy Spacek bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Excellent choice of narrator. Sissy brought out all the feeling behind the characters portrayed in the book. Obviously seeing Sissy as Carrie in the film helped however Sissy brought to the book a professionalism that was believable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The point where Carrie prepares for the Prom attends the dance and naturally fits in until the events that brought forward the catastrophe.
    Any additional comments?
Definitely worth listening to this book. The story brings to the reader the tale of a young girl persecuted for the way she was brought up through no fault of her own and then takes matters into her own hands in a devastating manner.

    A great addicting read.
    Any additional comments?
When I began reading this book, I was transported to another place, which is what happened with the previous Daniel Woodrell novel I'd read. The location of this book is hot and stifling and miserable. The characters are flawed and interesting. The main character in particularly consistent in this way, which drives the plot. He is also the narrator of the story so you become carried away with his circumstances right along with him. Very quickly there I was, all ready to sit on a back porch in 90 degree heat with dirty jeans and my shirt off my back, trying to figure out my fate while bumming off a beer from somebody, when it did occur to me that I am actually a woman in very cool climate who has no back porch and does not drink beer and must keep her shirt on. Such is the magic of this novel.
    Wonderful narration!
What made the experience of listening to Tomato Red the most enjoyable?
The narrator was the highlight of this story. His acting abilities were clear (on top of his enjoyable voice). He was very skilled at doing female voices, which I find that many male narrators struggle to do well.
I liked that the book is fairly short compared to many fiction novels out there today.
Which character as performed by Brian Troxell was your favorite?
    Sammy
    West Table, MO
Welcome to West Table, MO. Not to be confused with West Plains, MO. If you are from West Plains, as I am, it is easy enough to recognize many familiar sights. It is a thinly veiled attempt to conceal the source of the wealth of colorful characters in this novel. If you look it up on the map, it is near Dora (Dorda in the books) and is 17 miles from the Arkansas line. The only thing that has me stumped is Venus Hollow. I don't know if that is Koshkonong or Cooterville.
The book itself drew me in with the first rambling paragraph. I was hooked on not only the very vivid characters, but also the amazing way that Woodrell is able to turn a phrase and flip it from something mundane into a beautiful work of prose.
My only disappointment with this novel was the way one of his characters met their end. I guess I was not expecting this to be a murder mystery.
Having said all of that, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
    Zero Hour Nine A.M.
I am freaking out because ever since I got this dad-blasted Doctorate of Divinity, on occasion someone actually asks me to perform a wedding. Thank God I haven't been asked to do a funeral yet. I don't think would be able to "go easy" as one of my clients says every time we pass a cop. So I thought I'd write a few book reviews to ease the sheer, overwhelming, unbelievably terrifying panic.

    Title: Southern Charm
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Tinsley Mortimer
    Narrator: Johanna Parker
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 37 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Southern girl Minty Davenport always dreamed of skyscrapers, yellow cabs, and a life like Eloise's in New York City. So upon graduation from college, she bids adieu to Charleston and makes a beeline for the Big Apple. Almost instantly, she finds herself at an event being photographed for Women's Wear Daily, and her career as a New York society "It Girl" is launched.
As Minty navigates the ironclad customs of New York society, a blossoming love life, and a job working for a ruthless and powerful publicist, she finds that the rules a Southern belle lives by-being nice to everyone, accentuating her femininity, and minding her manners-don't necessarily guarantee success in Manhattan. She may indeed be accumulating new friends and opportunities along with bold-faced mentions and a very eligible bachelor boyfriend, but someone is plotting her very public downfall. When Minty gets to the top of the social ladder, she must decide if the glamorous life she thought she wanted is really everything she hoped it would be. Tinsley Mortimer's insider observations about New York's elite are deliciously witty, and the heart of her book is that of an irresistibly loveable young woman who is on the brink of finding her dream.
    Critic Reviews:
"Southern Charm will remind you of who you were before you became a jaded New Yorker." (Kelly Rutherford)
    Members Reviews:
    Not Very Original
What would have made Southern Charm better?
I would have liked to seen Minty struggle more with financial matters, live in a tiny, overpriced cracker box apartment with mean neighbors and just have her not be so darn shallow.
What was most disappointing about Tinsley Mortimers story?
I was disappointing because I've read this story many times over. You know, the whole "small town girl goes to NYC to make her way in the big apple" thing... Except it's hard to empathize or identify with Minty. I guess what bothers me is that she doesn't seem to ever work for anything, it just falls in her lap, well...because she's ...Minty. Her rich Southern family "get" her a nice apartment (and have it decorated), buy her clothes and fund her lifestyle until she basically walks into a job with a top PR firm....and of course Minty is so beautiful and vivacious that soon photographers are snapping her picture everywhere and she becomes the toast of the town. What I found hilarious is the fact that Minty complains several times about her boyfriend/husband acting like a spoiled little boy when she's hardly much better. It's very obvious that the writer patterned this after Lauren Weisberger's novels (Devil Wears Prada, Chasing Harry Winston, etc...).
What about Johanna Parkers performance did you like?
Johanna Parker's performance is marvelous as always. Sorry she got stuck with this dud.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Southern Charm?
I probably wouldn't cut anything, I would add to it....flesh it out a bit. Make Minty more likable to the average woman on the street.
A Delightful Southern Treat Of A Read
As a true Southener, I adored this book. Listening to Tinsley tell her story, brought back so many memories of my first trip to NY (I also stayed at The Plaza) and the tapes which play in my own mind, placed ever so carefully by my Louisiana born and bred dear Mother.

    Publisher's Summary:
A bewitching tale of heartbreak and hope set in 1920s Alaska. Jack and Mabel have staked everything on making a fresh start for themselves in a homestead 'at the world's edge' in the raw Alaska wilderness. But as the days grow shorter, Jack is losing his battle to clear the land, and Mabel can no longer contain her grief for the baby she lost many years before. The evening the first snow falls, their mood unaccountably changes. In a moment of tenderness, the pair is surprised to find they building a snowman - or rather a snow girl - together.
The next morning, all trace of her has disappeared, and Jack can't quite shake the notion that he glimpsed a small figure - a child? - running through the spruce trees in the dawn light. And how to explain the little but very human tracks Mabel finds at the edge of their property? Written with the clarity and vividness of the Russian fairy-tale from which it takes its inspiration, THE SNOW CHILD is an instant classic - the story of a couple who take a child into their hearts, all the while knowing they can never truly call her their own.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is real magic, shot through from cover to cover with the cold, wild beauty of the Alaskan frontier. Eowyn Ivey writes with all the captivating delicacy of the snowfalls she so beautifully describes." (Ali Shaw, author of THE GIRL WITH GLASS FEET)
"If Willa Cather and Gabriel Garcia Marquez had collaborated on a book, THE SNOW CHILD would be it." (Robert Goolrick, author of A RELIABLE WIFE)
"Eowyn Ivey's prose brings the chilly northern wilderness to life." (Bookseller)

    Masterful
Where does The Snow Child rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
While a simple read this book has wonderful depths and leaves you thinking long after you finish it. Unforgetable.
What did you like best about this story?
The dance between reality and fantasy, it was masterfully written.
Which character as performed by Debra Monk was your favorite?
Mabel, a woman with inner beauty and torment much like the landscape she is trying to adapt to.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A journey of discovery and love.
    Any additional comments?
Quite a slow book and at times seem longer than it needs to be but you will find yourself immersed in the story. Well worth listening and one of those rare stories that will stay with you forever. The raw setting is beautifully and poetically presented to the reader and you find yourself rising and falling with the tempo of emotions from dark and depressed to hopeful and elated. Some things are never revealed but you find yourself accepting that.
    Ethereal
If you could sum up The Snow Child in three words, what would they be?
    Ethereal, haunting, memorable
Who was your favorite character and why?
The snow child herself because she was such a mystery.
What does Debra Monk bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She brought a true voice to the characters.
If you could take any character from The Snow Child out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Esther, because she is a hoot!
    Any additional comments?
This was my first audibook and it was truly special. I was very lucky to choose this one as my first.
A lovely haunting story with gentle narration
This is a charming story with wonderful description and imagery. The narrator's soft accent really helps the story along.

    Release date: 12-20-11

    Publisher's Summary:
In this, her 14th novel - and one of her most endearing - Anne Tyler tells the story of a lovable loser who's trying to get his life in order.
Barnaby Gaitlin has been in trouble ever since adolescence. He had this habit of breaking into other people's houses. It wasn't the big loot he was after, like his teenage cohorts. It was just that he liked to read other people's mail, pore over their family photo albums, and appropriate a few of their precious mementos. But for 11 years now, he's been working steadily for Rent-a-Back, renting his back to old folks and shut-ins who can't move their own porch furniture or bring the Christmas tree down from the attic. At last, his life seems to be on an even keel. Still, the Gaitlins (of "old" Baltimore) cannot forget the price they paid for buying off Barnaby's former victims. And his ex-wife would just as soon he didn't show up ever to visit their little girl, Opal. Even the nice, steady woman (his guardian angel?) who seems to have designs on him doesn't fully trust him, it develops, when the chips are down, and it looks as though his world may fall apart again.
There is no one like Anne Tyler, with her sharp, funny, tender perceptions about how human beings navigate on a puzzling planet, and she keeps us enthralled from start to finish in this delicious new novel.
    Critic Reviews:
"Absolutely wonderful: Tyler's many admirers are sure to number this among her very best work." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Filled with insight and compassion, Anne Tyler's 14th novel chronicles a year in the life of a 30-year-old 'loser' named Barnaby Gaitlin....Tyler has crafted a remarkably lovable character." (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

    Good character but not-so-good story
One of those stories in which the character is endearing but doesn't do much. A very insightful description of aging. The narrator was terrific.
    Meh
Narrator was annoying. The character was whiny and unlikable. The story just did not come alive to me. Kind of a bummer.

    Publisher's Summary:
Under the Glacier represents Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness at his entertaining and brilliantly inventive best. Philosophy, theological speculation, and charming wit combine to make this novel a timeless fable of modern times.
A youthful emissary of the Bishop of Iceland travels to the beautiful and mysterious district of Snfellsnes, locally known as "Under Glacier" to investigate the affairs of the parish and its enigmatic pastor. The story is the young man's report to the bishop on the extraordinary events taking place at the foot of Snfellsnes-Glacier and the remarkable characters he encounters in the course of his investigations. In this strange region, all accepted distinctions between past and present, the mundane and the supernatural, seem at times to vanish.
    Critic Reviews:
"Laxness is a beacon in twentieth-century literature, a writer of splendid originality, wit, and feeling." (Alice Munro)
"A marvelous novel about the most ambitious questions. It is also one of the funniest books ever written." (Susan Sontag)
"The qualities of the sagas pervade his writing, and particularly a kind of humoroblique, stylized and childlikethat can be found in no other contemporary writer." (The Atlantic Monthly)
    Members Reviews:
Horrible narration and performance. Not worth listening to this way.
The book itself is a bit difficult but can be interesting. Unfortunately, The narration is a travesty. The narrator is flat and an interesting and has not bothered to check out how to pronounce any of the names or places in the book. I travel to Iceland four or five times per year over the last 10 years. Listening to every name and place being mutilated is too distracting to make it possible for this book to be listen to for long. Any school child could have put the names into Google and have them pronounced correctly. If you are able to overlook the grating sound of names being mashed, and the narrator sounds as if he is stumbling over most of them, the narrator is still just not able to make the story come to life. It is almost like listening to a telemarketer. A real shame as this can be a very interesting book. Requested a refund
    Wonderful, engaging
Although it is true that the pronunciation of non-English words and phrases has a distinct English accent, I do not think this has a significant effect on the quality of the performance. On the contrary, the reader's tone and affect are very appropriate for Laxness's style of dry, mocking humor.
The story is engaging, and to me slightly reminiscent of Nabokov's tendencies to mock, at least superficially, any target in sight.
It takes some time but becomes well worth it.
And absolutely skip chapter two which in its entirty a misserable intellectule pretension and gives away important revelations The introduction should have a post script critque. I bought a book not a review and contemplated returning the whole thing but simply skipped to chapter two. Things did not get much better for a long time. However, I got accustomed to bizzar dialog and became amused so kept listening. Eventually the story became engrossing and was a very satisfactory tale. And the ending chapters made the early slog worth while. Indeed I plan to re-listen some of the early obscure parts to better put the whole thing to one piece.
Now I will start the introduction again to see if it might be enduarable to the end. .....

    A solid, good book
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this story because it provides an unique view inside a family and their unique celebration of Christmas and looking forward.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    The ending was very satisfying.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I thought that the narrator was excellent. She captured the tone of the book and its characters.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
If this book were a movie, I wouldn't go to see it because I generally prefer more folksy stories. However, this was an excellent story.
    Any additional comments?
This book had interesting characters, a plot that I couldn't predict, and a big event that made Christmas special for the family. It was a different kind of Christmas story and I'm really glad that I read it.
    Danielle Steele
This book was more like a Danielle Steele book than a book by James Patterson. I was very disappointed in it.
Easy read, but buy it on sale
The story is cute, predictable and somewhat of a Lifetime TV movie story. I would recommend getting the book if it is on sale, but not worth a credit. Performance was ok.
Nothing memorable, nothing to cry over if you have spend a credit.
    A so so Christmas Wedding
I was very disappointed by this book. I thought that a book by James Patterson would have been far more superior. The plot was predictable and mediocre at best. The main character was self serving and self centered, very hard to relate with. I will say the narrators did a great job because they kept the story going.
    Wonderful Enjoyable
I really enjoyed the story it was heart warming. I loved how it brought a family members that were going there own ways and in the end came together. I enjoyed it so much that I was sorry it had to end.

    Publisher's Summary:
Each year, the storyteller, Hassan, gathers listeners to the city square to share their recollections of a young, foreign couple who mysteriously disappeared years earlier. As various witnesses describe their encounters with the couple, Hassan hopes to light upon the details that will explain what happened to them, and to absolve his own brother, who is in prison for their disappearance. But is this annual storytelling ritual a genuine attempt to uncover the truth, or is it intended instead to weave and ambiguous mythology around a crime?
The first in an ambitious cycle of novels set in the Islamic world, The Storyteller of Marrakesh is an elegant exploration of the nature of reality and our shifting perceptions of truth.
    Critic Reviews:
"An enigmatic fable in the tradition of The Thousand and One Nights." (Editor's Choice, The New York Times)
"[A] broad, discursive, plausible, and often beguiling presentation of a contemporary Islamic culture little changed by centuries, geopolitics, globalization or religious enmity. Roy-Battacharyas descriptive powers are acute, and Marrakesh, the Djemaa, the Sahara, and the High Atlas Mountains are vividly rendered through all the senses. In a time when tensions between Islam and the West are fevered, The Storyteller of Marrakesh offers an agreeable change of pace." (Booklist)
"Steeped in the ambiance of Marrakesh, this exotic metafictional tale marks Roy-Bhattacharyas U.S. debut and will appeal to readers of complex narratives by unreliable narrators. Lovers of mysteries with ambiguous endings will also enjoy this novel." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Experience Morocco without actually going there.
I was actually in Morocco when I was reading it. That helped! The rhythm, method and pace of the storytelling perfectly defines the Moroccan experience. If an American is going to just pick this up and read it like an American novel, that reader may become frustrated with its lack of direct and constant forward moving action. But if the reader wants to immerse himself in Moroccan life, this is the book. For me, it was perfect. A couple of tourists appear in the medina (marketplace) one night, then disappear. Everyone sees these people differently and has different parts of the story to tell. The storyteller of the title weaves these disparate stories together to determine what happened. Why? His brother sits in jail convicted of murder. I would add, if I may, that a trip to Morocco (and not just the northern parts) is well worth the experience.
Like the twisting alleyways of the medina
IIf you like ambiguity and mystery in fiction, you will like this book. It weaves varied views of the same occurrence in the main market square of Marrakesh, leaving you to decide what actually happened. The emphasis is on those who contribute to the storyteller's story. Publisher's Summary:
Summer is a magical time in New York City and Carrie is in love with all of it - the crazy characters in her neighborhood, the vintage-clothing boutiques, the wild parties, and the glamorous man who has swept her off her feet. Best of all, she's finally in a real writing class, taking her first steps toward fulfilling her dream.
This sequel to The Carrie Diaries brings surprising revelations as Carrie learns to navigate her way around the Big Apple, going from being a country "sparrow" - as Samantha Jones dubs her - to the person she always wanted to be. But as it becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile her past with her future, Carrie realizes that making it in New York is much more complicated than she ever imagined.
With her signature wit and sparkling humor, Candace Bushnell reveals the irresistible story of how Carrie met Samantha and Miranda, and what turned a small-town girl into one of New York City's most unforgettable icons, Carrie Bradshaw.

    Any additional comments?
This was a fun story. I listened to the first book and just had to find out more. The characters were good and the situations interesting. If you really want to know how Carrie Bradshaw got to New York this is a cool way to find out. Samantha was a hoot and I loved Miranda.
    Some disappointments:
I didn't like that the character Charlotte took too long to come in the picture. This could also be a way to lead into another book though. Keep you hanging right?
There were a few things that were a bit unrealistic like Carrie's love interest. This was just a little far fetched, I was waiting for her to ditch him or him her. The idea that she was seeing someone that was so much older than her and he not know how young she was just seemed dumb. But...it didn't prevent me from listening.
The teacher was a creep, I didn't think this story line was important at all.
All in all this was great. I loved the television series, so it was wonderful to connect with the characters again.
    Just Alright
Let me preface this by saying that Jenna Lamia is one of my all-time favorite narrators, but I like Sarah Drew better reading this series. This was not as good as The Carrie Diaries. It definitely improved in the last quarter. I haven't read the Sex and the City book, so maybe I'm wrong here, but I feel like Bushnell is pulling ideas and characters from the TV series because she knows it is more popular that the original book. For instance, a young woman named Charlotte makes a cameo in the last scene. She is searching for a husband in NYC. Wasn't Charlotte a minor character in the SATC book who was British? This was just alright. I really liked Carrie in The Carrie Diaries. I started to dislike her here.
I'm not sure I like this Carrie
Carrie Bradshaw arrives in NYC at the tender age of seventeen. She is young, naive, and inexperienced. But, she has a lot of spirit and endeavors to leave her old life behind and conquer the big apple. In some ways, she is different from the Carrie of the television series. For instance, she can cook.
