Welcome back to Boystown!

Members Reviews:

Unflipping believable

First, while I love Jake Biondi's work, I hate him too. I thought that the first episodes were convoluted but this one is far beyond that. I actually thought about diagramming the relationships since they keep changing. On Thanksgiving Emmett and Keith get engaged....a little over a month later one is engaged to someone else and the other is in a new relationship. Derek still is 1) in love and cheating on his wife 2) in love with and cheating with Cole. David was trying for Michael but has moved on to try for Cole. Justin is in trouble and sleeping with Rachel and Gino. Gino's twin is helping his father destroy the Mancini's which is Derek, Emmett, and Justin. Rachel is backstabbing everyone. I don't trust several of these people...Jesse is a hot headed kid. Tyler is going after Joyelle and doing illegal medical tests for Ben. David seems to be a bit shady. In the space of a few weeks all manner of events, betrayal, and underhanded actions are taking place. Do these people ever have a quiet, dull day? And of course this ends with sex and betrayal in one room, a party in another, and an explosion. Of course I'm starting the third book but I need a break first. Who knew that Chicago could be so exciting!!

Jake Biondi Boystown Series 2 yep hooked!!!

A handful of authors write in a style that creates the images, evokes the emotion and lets the reader connect with the characters in a way that your heart, soul and body are affected. Jake Biondi in his Boystown series is a master at controlling just that. His writing style is unprecedented. It is as if you are a voyeur on the lives of the amazing characters he has created. You feel their love, pain and yes even their sexual experiences as if you were in the role yourself. It is as if you are watching a movie and you are part of it. You become family to the Mancini and Ciancio family and their friends. The stories are fast paced and keep you turning pages well into bedtime. The sexual descriptions are so real and written so explicitly that you find yourself trying to juggle the kindle and something else.

Title: Beyond the Orchard

Author: Anna Romer

Narrator: Hannah Norris

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 27 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-10-16

Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 87 votes

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

A haunting story of yearning, love and betrayal from the best-selling author of Thornwood House.

Lucy Briar has arrived home in turmoil after years overseas. She's met her fiancé in London and has her life mapped out, but something is holding her back.

Hoping to ground herself and find answers, Lucy settles into once familiar routines. But old tortured feelings flood Lucy's existence when her beloved father, Ron, is hospitalised and Morgan - the man who drove her away all those years ago - seeks her out.

Worse, Ron implores Lucy to visit Bitterwood Estate, the crumbling historic family guesthouse now left to him. He needs Lucy to find something - an old photograph album, the very thing that drove Ron and his father apart.

Lucy has her own painful memories of Bitterwood, darkness that has plagued her dreams since she was young. But as Lucy searches for the album, the house begins to give up its ghosts and she is driven to put them to rest.

And there, held tightly between the house, the orchard and the soaring cliffs, Lucy uncovers a long-hidden secret that shattered a family's bond and kept a frightened young girl in its thrall...and Lucy discovers just how fierce the lonely heart can be.

Members Reviews:

Take the time to listen....so worth it!

You definitely need to pay attention to keep up with the three story lines. By chapter 8...I was sorta lost so started at the beginning and listening only when I was able to concentrate....like doing dishes, making Beds, blow drying my hair or at work editing photos. I loved the narrator.

Convoluted Story, Good Narrator

This story jumped around from one time period to another. It was hard to place the characters for several chapters. I'm thinking that it might be better to read this book, rather than listen to it. The narrator was the only reason I finished the book, as none of the characters were very interesting or sympathetic.

Great summer read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Very engaging story and characters; not hard to follow. Love how the fairy tale was woven in. Suspenseful and kept me interested to the end. Excellent narration. Can't wait for the next book!

Trouble following story

What disappointed you about Beyond the Orchard?

I had a lot of trouble getting into the storyline.

Have you listened to any of Hannah Norriss other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but her performance was fine. I would definitely listen to other reads of hers.

Any additional comments?

Just disappointed.

AMAZING!!!

Thank you Anna for this amazing story. So real and descriptive and so very captivating!

Title: Holding

Author: Graham Norton

Narrator: Graham Norton

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 26 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-06-16

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 82 votes

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Graham Norton's masterful debut is an intelligently crafted story of love, secrets and loss.

The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama; and yet its inhabitants are troubled. Sergeant PJ Collins hasn't always been this overweight; mother of two Brid Riordan hasn't always been an alcoholic; and elegant Evelyn Ross hasn't always felt that her life was a total waste.

So when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be that of Tommy Burke - a former love of both Brid and Evelyn - the village's dark past begins to unravel. As the frustrated PJ struggles to solve a genuine case for the first time in his life, he unearths a community's worth of anger and resentments, secrets and regret.

Darkly comic, touching and at times profoundly sad. Graham Norton employs his acerbic wit to breathe life into a host of loveable characters, and explore - with searing honesty - the complexities and contradictions that make us human.

Members Reviews:

Absolutely charming

What made the experience of listening to Holding the most enjoyable?

Having Graham Norton read his own work made this special. He has a wonderful voice for narration.

What does Graham Norton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

His Irish accent - it made the characters really come alive.

Loved it!

Very enjoyable murder mystery. Characters you can judge and cheer for at the same time. I am definitely buying his next book!

Loved It!

I listened to Graham Norton tell his story Holding while lying in a hospital bed for two days. Graham helped me escape the tests, the IVs, the shouting roommate, and all of the other miserable things one experiences while in the sickbed. I think Graham helped me laugh myself better. Thank you, Mr. Norton.

Loved it !

An excellent read, great characters and story and fabulous delivery. I hope Graham Norton writes more.

Excellent! Really a surprise.

Any additional comments?

Well, I have always watched Graham's shows thinking that that was all there was to the man. Well well...this was a welcome surprise. His writing and narration are both brilliant. Love the quaint story of village life and the drama that accumulates. As someone who came from a small town in South Africa, the stories are always more intricate than one could imagine. In big cities, it's almost as if the focus and resolution of life's drama is lost in the melee.

Thanks for the entertaining listen. Hope you have more in you.

Members Reviews:

Exciting, and empowering read!

I was on the edge of my beach chair the entire time! Couldn't wait to see what Crystal's fate would be..rescheduled lunch plans to finish! Thoroughly enjoyed the authors construction of the story and how you really felt the emotional highs and lows along with the main character, Crystal! Super authentic, and raw expression of events all too familiar to anyone who has loved another. Perfectly balanced with moments of bursting laughter, and moments where you want to give the character a big hug-or maybe invite her to cry with you over a glass of Jordan. Full of lovable characters, and great life lessons! Really enjoyed thank you!

Fascinating read

It was a gripping and fascinating page turner. The story pulls you in and keeps you flipping from page to page. I haven't read a novel in two days for a long time.

Thanks for making it free through an online code

I recommend this to anyone who wants to waste their time.

Possible spoilers?:

The woman spends the book making terrible choices that she has control over - justifies her mistakes so that she is never wrong....has an epiphany that maybe she IS doing something wrong....then sums up at the end with the same diluted justifications that she had been using throughout.

If you have been through a dirty breakup that isn't your fault, or you're drunk and hating yourself, I highly recommend this book.

Title: The Queue

Author: Basma Abdel Aziz, Elisabeth Jaquette - translator

Narrator: Mark Bramhall

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-12-16

Publisher: Random House Audio

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Winner of the English PEN Translation Award

In a surreal but familiar vision of modern-day Egypt, a centralized authority known as the Gate has risen to power in the aftermath of the Disgraceful Events, a failed popular uprising. Citizens are required to obtain permission from the Gate in order to take care of even the most basic of their daily affairs, yet the Gate never opens, and the queue in front of it grows longer.

Citizens from all walks of life mix and wait in the sun: a revolutionary journalist, a sheikh, a poor woman concerned for her daughter's health, and even the brother of a security officer killed in clashes with protestors. Among them is Yehia, a man who was shot during the Events and is waiting for permission from the Gate to remove a bullet that remains lodged in his pelvis. Yehia's health steadily declines, yet at every turn officials refuse to assist him, actively denying the very existence of the bullet.

Ultimately it is Tarek, the principled doctor tending to Yehia's case, who must decide whether to follow protocol as he has always done or to disobey the law and risk his career to operate on Yehia and save his life.

Written with dark, subtle humor, The Queue describes the sinister nature of authoritarianism and illuminates the way that absolute authority manipulates information, mobilizes others in service to it, and fails to uphold the rights of even those faithful to it.

Did not really have an ending! Just started out ...

Did not really have an ending! Just started out dreary and then stopped before any subplots reached conclusions. Rather frustrating.

Absolutely intriguing

This book is an amazing treasury of the nerves feelings and trepidation that we all feel about governance in intrusive countries. I cannot believe that the author was able to touch this nerve exactly. Very thoughtful and an excellent read. Thanks for writing this. I will recommend this book for my children.

Deeply real.

Powerful. This will make you think about your life.

Five Stars

A stark warning about authoritarianism, written in a quiet, chilling tone.

Four Stars

A reminder that all is possible - good or evil.
