Surprisingly good!

The writer manages a neat trick in this book - she writes a protagonist who you don't at first respect, or even like much. But he is compelling and interesting and complex. So you keep reading/listening and become invested in how he begins to change.

Vividly written in a fresh, punchy voice, and really well read - I enjoyed this one immensely.

Just a caution, this is a YA book for older teens (sex, drugs, and plenty swears).

Well matched narrator and story

Likeable characters and an easy-to-listen-to narrator made this book a great choice for a long drive. Main character, Jesse Aldermann, is surprisingly relatable as he hides pain and loss behind a couldn't-care-less attitude and sense of humour.

A Light-Hearted Paranoid Thriller

Edward Snowden has shown us where all the information in our information age is going; David Shafer works out the implications in a clever, fast read that channels the zeitgeist. The set-up (which may seem familiar): a ravenous addiction to digital connectivity has seduced us into handing over vast amounts of personal information to ... who, exactly?... which has provoked an equally frenzied panic about the loss of privacy. A serious topic, surely, but Shafer has made of it a shapely comedy/thriller. The three characters he has chosen to save the world are truly unimpressive: a serious-minded NGO worker, a mentally unstable trustafarian and a deeply hypocritical, self-loathing self-help guru (whose tribulations are especially, hilariously awful). This is a very entertaining read with a serious premise and a solid heart.

An NPR reviewer compared this book to Neal Stephenson's work, but the resemblance is only superficial. Stephenson is an idea man, with a dazzling gift for multi-level narrative and a tough, comprehensive and witty view of technology and its history. Shafer is also witty and inventive, but his concerns are essentially moral. He is less interested in the technologies that have led us to this sorry state of affairs than in what we will make of them.

long intro to a story that never quite delivers ;(

Mr. Shafer writes very well. He has created interesting characters that have the potential for considerable depth; they are appropriately "snarky" & hip! His world is terrifying possible, and the thesis could be right from tomorrow's news.

My disappointment is that (IMHO) the plot took forever to develop and the best part - the last part of the book was what i was hoping to encounter throughout the whole piece. I wish there had been considerable editing and the end of the book actually be the middle of the book. This book would make more sense if these characters will be part of a series...

What did you like about this audiobook?

This book is very well written, with engaging characters that draw the listener in. The subject matter was not the usual fare. Its probably worth saying that its like a more serious version of 'Rachael's Holiday' by Marian Keyes.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

The narration was good, but just a little 'off' at times. At one point my partner came into the room and said "it sounds like Siri is reading that book"! It could be a little wooden at times. And there were moments of dead air occasionally. However, that aside, she performed the different voices very well. The voice of 5-year-old Ellie was excellent! Overall, the narration was very good.

this is a nice plus is a nice plus in this series but it is not a great book just start out with read no good deed first even the second book before listening or reading the prequel

Cheesy and Poorly Written

I stuck with this one until the end, but it only got worse . . . the narration was nails-on-the-blackboard irritating . . . needless to say, I won't be listening to any more in the series.

Ok story

Might even have been a good story with a different narrator. The constant shift between loud narration and the whining whisper of the main character distracted from the story. It also made the main character sound like a spoiled child especially in scenes with his father. In fact, he sounded so inept I'm amazed he could run his own photography business without an assistant let alone actually save someone's life. I'll pass on the rest of the series.

Great Adventure, and what an ending..

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to certain friends, but not everybody. There are some very provocative sexual parts including pedophilia (30yr-old-woman and 12yr-old-boy) and the main character is homosexual and lives in San Francisco, which is a large part of the story. If that kind of stuff won't bother you, I recommend you get this book. It's nothing THAT bad.

Typical Clive

The Narrator was good the story was strange, typical of the author. I like story's that are outside of the box. That being said every book I've read from him has had heavy sexual overtones both straight and gay. It doesn't bother me terribly I'd prefer it not be there but isn't a deal breaker, but for many it may be and it's only fair to know it going in so there's your fair warning. The story itself can be reviewed by others.

As always a heady mix of horror + wonder + sensuality + repulsion, Ive read many of his books long ago, but hadn't caught this one yet. I think ill be revisiting the rest!

Only thing- narrator was great, but his American accents esp. the southern were tough to listen to! Thankfully those characters werent main stage.

Sacrament is a strange book. I just couldn't connect with the characters. In actuality, I couldn't even finish the book. I did give it a good 3 hours and then I was done. As I didn't finish the book, I can not recommend this to anyone.

I really enjoy Mr. MacDonnell's narration and this book WILL NOT put me off from listening to another one of his books. Mr. MacDonnell did the best he could with this story.

That s what I call bad writing

Bad, bad, really bad!!

Sometimes it just hurts to keep on reading. The worst of all, the parts with the mother of the character.

No bestseller in my opinion

No. I'm half way and sit it out but never again.

Twists and turned almost ruined by the narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Didn't really like many of the main characters, the men were portrayed without any redeeming characteristics and the women were portrayed as weak (emphasised by the squeaky voices they were given).

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator spoiled the telling of the story by insisting on providing the characters with voices which she couldn't really do or maintain. There were only about 4 different voices for the whole cast and they kept reverting to her own voice if they had long speeches.

Was The Winter Folly worth the listening time?

Yes, having moaned above about the story you might think I hated it but I ended up thoroughly enjoying the story and am glad I continued despite all my complaints. There were enough twists and turns to keep you guessing almost all the way to the end.

Superb!

Loved the ups and downs and the twists in the story. Just when you think you've got the whole thing sussed, it springs another surprise. Really enjoyed it and would like to read/listen to more by this author.

Cross generation love story

Excellent story well crafted with great pace. However I really don't think Lulu really needed to put in so many highly detailed sex scenes. The story carried itself and they added nothing to the mix.

The narrator needs to practise on men's voices. I found I didn't like any of the men in the story, just because of the way they spoke. It was generally a good story line that kept me listening as to what would happen next. A few times I'd hope traffic lights would turn to red so I could listen a bit more. I found the ending a bit flat and predictable and found myself shouting at the story saying , do this or that.

Excellent well!

Once again, Harper has done it. She really excels at taking Queen Elizabeth I and making her flesh and blood. I've always enjoyed how she portrays the queen as strong-willed and yet vulnerable and how she doesn't try to gloss over the queen's rough edges. She has taken something of a one-dimensional historical figure and made her flesh and blood. I've long admired Elizabeth I and I'm very glad to see an author doing her such justice in portraying her as the complex human being she must have been.

As in the previous novels in the series, the peace of Elizabeth's kingdom is threatened by murder most foul. Harper does a nice job of juxtaposing the murder mystery with Elizabeth's fears of a northern uprising and the queen's constant worries over exactly how much of a threat Mary, Queen of Scots posed. I think this nicely shows how Elizabeth was concerned not only with the political in that she frets about the well-being of her country as a whole but also the personal in that she takes such an interest in her subjects.

Harper's other strength are her secondary characters. Those who have read the series have likely come to feel like Meg, Jenks, and Ned are friends and it is always welcome to read about the characters triumphs and to worry about their misfortunes. I felt the same sense of urgency Elizabeth felt when one of her favorites was placed in a position of grave danger.

As for the mystery itself, it is well-plotted and it is always intriguing to see how Harper uses period details to create innovative methods of executing a crime. This book's victim meets her end in the very vat in which she starches the highly fashionable ruffs that are helping her to earn her fortune. This is characteristic of Harper's writing in that the ends that the unfortunate victims meet provide a peek into the clever and diabolical minds of their killers.

Also admirable is the deft way in which Harper weaves the romances of secondary characters skillfully into the narrative to serve as emphasis of the lonely position that Elizabeth has chosen for herself. I've certainly always understood that Elizabeth's defiance when it came to the subject of marriage was certainly a political risk but it was Harper who made me begin to think of what a personal risk it must have been.

I love everything Karen Harper writes, I couldn't really find anything flawed in this book , characters were well written , the plot was intriguing enough . i wasn't sure about the references to Elizabeth`s mother and a paragraph that had nothing whatsoever to do with the plot ,i felt it was un-necessary .

Great for sharing!

I think one of the most fascinating things about this book is how the author slipped back and forth between the past and present so easily. She shows us how Ruby is feeling in the present and then slowly goes back and shows us how she got to that point. I did get confused once in a while flipping back and forth between the past and present but not enough to really detract from my enjoyment of the book.

I also really liked the theme. There is much for the reader to ponder. Ruby wants her 'wish' to come true so badly. I think most of us can relate to that. I know I have plenty of wishes myself. But I was surprised at what her wish really ended up being. I thought I knew what she wished for fairly early in the book, but it turns out I wasn't quite right. That was a nice twist. I could also easily relate to Ruby's desire to do what she's 'supposed to' and her confusion over what 'supposed to' really was. Her confusion leads to her problems with her friends and she's left really wanting to know if there really is such a thing as fate or destiny or if it all comes down to the choices we make. This is a great theme not only for kids but also for adults, very thoughtful.

I found Ruby, Lucy, and Nero very sympathetic characters as each is very human with strengths and weaknesses. They felt very real. Lucy with her struggles to learn her lines for the play she is in is the dramatic, loud one, who feels very hurt when Ruby doesn't share her wish right away. Nero works with his father in a donut shop, but doesn't really want to, and loves to ask unusual questions, and he helps Ruby with some of her questions. And Ruby, hurting over the loss of her beloved grandmother, and confused as to how her family has been able to move on so easily.

This book would make a great read-a-loud in a classroom or for a family or school to read together. I feel comfortable in recommending it highly. Definitely a Newbery contender.

Living without a "supposed to"

There are only two things I require from life: Donuts and good books. Obviously that statement is false, but it sure sounds good. I like donuts. I like good books. And a good book that involves donuts? Cosmic all-encompassing donuts that aren't afraid to ask the big questions? Even better! Now I've followed the career of Linda Urban over the years and the simple fact of the matter is that with each of her books she gets better. Her latest, "The Center of Everything" follows its predecessors "Hound Dog True" and "A Crooked Kind of Perfect" into the familiar realm of quiet thoughtful fiction.

A Second Chance At Love Story...

Into the Deep is the book it claims to be. It's a second-chance/ex-lovers romance through and through. It starts off in alternating chapters between present and past, so we really do fall in love with this couple twice in this book. A second chance at love story always tugs at my heartstrings. Not only did Into the Deep tug at my heart strings it settled in and gave my heart a great big crushing squeeze! It was filled with painful longing, lusty attraction, and a once in a lifetime romance. Jake & Charley first meet in high school. Jake moves to Charley's small-town and turns her world upside down. She trusts and loves him whole-heartedly. They fell into love while they were both sixteen. They were very young, but sometimes life works out like that. Unfortunately, tragic circumstances cause a rift and Jake leaves Charley without any explanation shattering Charleys heart. Shes never been the same. Over three years later Charley has moved on as best as she could and is fulfilling her goal of studying abroad. Complete shock, excruciating pain, and disbelief strike Charley when she finds Jake also attending school there, as well, with a girlfriend in tow! Avoiding him and his girlfriend is near impossible as all of their friends hang out together. Plus, Jake cant seem to stay away from Charley and asks her to be his friend. She knows that she should avoid him and refuse but she just cant tell him no. Their mutual attraction and deep connection comes through loud and clear to everyone around, causing drama and angst. The story alternates chapters flashing back to the past, and then going back to the future, revealing slowly what went wrong with Charley and Jake.With all my uneasiness over Jake I still want nothing more than a HEA between them. Their hot chemistry, sparks, and attraction are felt profoundly throughout the story!! Samantha Young always manages to suck me in with her addictive and wonderful writing. All the ups & downs were worth every moment! I'm looking forward to the sequel once released!!

Honestly, after hearing the first 30 mins of the book I stop and just go on reading the book itself.
