Another wonderful book by Mary wood.

This book is a spinoff of the Bretton trilogy. The setting is world war 2'like the other books in this series it is a story of love and courage and lots of pain and heartache and how the human spirit can overcome tremendous obstacles . Another great read by this very accomplished author.

Excellent read

Wow what a story from the first book to the last. I would recommend Mary Wood's series to everyone. I found myself in the story as though I was part of it. Excellent read.

Engaging story

Although the story is engaging and draws you in, I didbn;t think the book was very well written, the relationships that emerged were rather 'Mills & Boon, however I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened to all the characters.

Length: 12 hrs and 47 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-18-17

Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

A heartfelt historical saga from Mary Wood, Proud of You is a gripping novel with a compelling mystery at its heart.

Alice, an upper-class Londoner, is recruited into the Special Operations Executive and sent to Paris, where she meets Gertrude, an ex-prostitute working for the Resistance Movement. Together they discover that they have a connection to the same man, Ralph D'Olivier, and vow to unravel the mystery of his death.

After narrowly escaping capture by the Germans, Alice is lifted out of France and taken to a hospital for wounded officers, where she meets Lil, a working-class Northern girl working as a nurse. Though worlds apart, Alice and Lil form a friendship, and Alice discovers Lil is also linked to Ralph D'Olivier.

Soon the war irrevocably changes each of these women, and they are thrust into a world of heartache and strife beyond anything they have had to endure before. Can they clear Ralph's name and find lasting love and happiness for themselves?

The best book I've read this year!

Alice, Lil and Gertrude all have a difficult past. Alice has grown up in luxury, but her childhood was filled with terror. Lil has married her childhood sweetheart who's changed into someone she doesn't recognize anymore. Gertrude was forced to leave her home when she was a teenager and she worked as a prostitute to keep herself alive. War has taken a lot from these women, but they've got one thing in common, they have strength. Alice and Gertrude meet in France and discover that they have a connection. They become friends while they are both working for the French resistance. Alice is a special agent and Gertrude works for a German family as an undercover language teacher. When Alice gets hurt she has to go back to the UK where she meets Lil. They become friends and discover that they also have a connection. Because of the war all of the women suffer and they have to endure things that are unbearable to think of. Are they going to survive and find the love they truly deserve or will the war ruin their lives and destroy everyone who's close to them?

Proud of You isn't a light read. Even before the war these three women had a tough life. Alice is the bravest heroine I've ever read about. Lil is a kind women who wants to make things all right for everyone. She has to live with a lot of guilt and she manages to turn it into something productive to help others. Gertrude's loyalty comes before love which in her case is an enormous achievement. It isn't easy to read about all the horrors that have happened in the Second World War, but it's good to be reminded. Mary Wood doesn't sugar coat things, she writes about the horrors in an honest way. She also writes about the good things, friendship and love in a beautiful way. Sometimes I had to swallow back tears and other times I was being kept on the edge of my seat for quite some time, because I had to know what would happen next in the lives of these three women. They've all become very dear to me. The same goes for this book, it's the best novel I've read this year.

Proud of You

I absolutely loved Mary's latest novel, in fact it is my favourite so far. The story is about 3 women set during World War 2, each of them have different struggles.

Four Stars

Good historical research makes this a great book, hard to put down

11th century Europe has never looked so intriguing!!

I knew with the first book in this series on the Norma Conquest queens that Iâd hit on something special. Courtney pleases with this book as well. Itâs rich with historical details, larger than life personalities, and a relationship so emotional itâll make your heart burn.

Before delving into this book, Elizaveta of Kiev was just a name on Wikipedia to me. Harald Hardrada was a remote vicious Viking king who I only knew for trying to conquer England at the end of the Viking era. Now, my eyes have been opened to a stubborn, courageous, and adventurous queen who pushes people to their limits. I also see a king who was as dedicated to building trade and peace within his kingdom as he was to conquest and warfare.

Courtney seems to have this talent at giving historical figures a personality as human as anyone on the street today. This is a talent she shares with such greats as Elizabeth Chadwick and Susan Higginbotham. Elizaveta and Harald benefit from this skill, giving us two figures who try to build a kingdom and empire al the while living life to the fullest and pushing their boundaries. They vibrate with life and feel like real people to me. I liked that Courtney didnât downplay the faults to benefit the virtues; everything was portrayed and incorporated into their portrayals.

I adored the main romantic relationship between these two as well. From an instant connection after first meeting to the end when they had to say farewell in spirit, their emotional pull to each other is amazingly shown. Mutual adventurous spirit and fiery personalities make for a sometimes rocky road; yet, their support of each other shines through regardless.

I have got to give props to Courtney for her delicate use of the relationships in the story and how they impact the story as a whole. Iâm thinking, as a prime example, the trio relationship of Harald, Elizaveta, and Tora. What could have been used as a plot device for melodrama and angst was actually handled very diplomatically with all parties behind it handled well. While there was some initial jealousy and drama, ultimately all three characters came to an understanding dynamic and worked together like a well-greased wheel to take care of Norway and build a future.

From the sophisticated court of Kiev to the pine-filled forests of Norway, this book tells the epic tale of two people that history has either forgotten or misrepresented (depending on who you ask, I guess). The reader gets a passionate romance, suspenseful tale of conquest and blood, and a humanization of obscure historical figures.

Title: Should You Ask Me

Author: Marianne Kavanagh

Narrator: Jilly Bond

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-18-17

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

'I've come about the bodies. I know who they are.'

Just before D-Day in 1944, on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, an elderly woman walks into a police station. She has information, she says, about human remains recently discovered nearby. The bodies could have stayed buried for ever - like the pain and passion that put them there. But Mary Holmes is finally ready to tell the truth.

The young constable sent to take her statement is still suffering from the injuries that ended his army career. As he tries to make sense of her tale, William finds himself increasingly distracted. Mary's confession forces his own violent memories to the surface - betrayals and regrets as badly healed as his war wounds. Over six days, as pressure builds for the final push in Europe, two lives reveal their secrets.

Should You Ask Me is a captivating story about people at their worst and best: raw, rich and utterly compelling.
