Format: Unabridged

Length: 11 hrs and 42 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-20-17

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Publisher's Summary:

Sometimes a family's deepest silences hide the most important secrets.

Carmela disappeared from her Italian hometown long ago and is mentioned only in fragments and whispers. Mina has resisted prying, respectful of her family's Sardinian reserve. But now, with her mother battling cancer, it's time to learn the truth.

In 1952, Simius is a busy Sardinian town surrounded by fertile farms and orchards. Carmela Chirigoni, a farmer's daughter and talented seamstress, is engaged to Franco, son of the area's wealthiest family. Everyone agrees it's a good match. But Carmela's growing doubts about Franco's possessiveness are magnified when she meets Captain Joe Kavanagh.

Joe, an American officer stationed at a local army base, is charismatic, intelligent, and married. Hired as his interpreter, Carmela resolves to ignore her feelings, knowing that any future together must bring upheaval and heartache to both families.

As Mina follows the threads of Carmela's life to uncover her fate, she will discover a past still deeply alive in the present, revealing a story of hope, sacrifice and extraordinary love.

Members Reviews:

Hauntingly Beautiful

It is rare that a romance novel has you holding your breath as you read it. Right from the start we know something as happened to Carmela, the heroine, who no one in the family will talk about. Decades later, it is up to her niece Mina to see if she can resolve the mystery.

Sara Alexander has done a brilliant job of creating three-dimensional characters who are passionate and flawed. Set in 1950's rural Sardinia, the location, culture, and especially the food play an important role. This is an interesting time in the island's history after WW II with the arrival of the American military looking to establish a base there. The juxtaposition of the new world and the old is compelling.

This is much more than a typical light romance with the usual tropes. It features a compelling plot and beautiful writing style. As someone who appreciates literature and reads many novels per week, I was stunned to see that this is Ms. Alexander's first book. It is incredibly rare to see someone with this level of talent right out of the gate.

Do NOT read any reviews which may give away the plot. This story deserves to be savored and the suspense created by the author is a crucial element. This is definitely a book I will reread and I will be waiting eagerly for whatever Sara Alexander writes next. As another reviewer suggested, this would make a great movie.

Captivating

Some writers have an almost poetic way of describing people and places and emotions and this one is as good as it gets. Every page makes you feel you are there, in the story, seeing and feeling what the characters are experiencing. Even the descriptions of the food they are cooking make you drool.

Great story well told. Hated to have it end. This would make a great movie.

Gorgeous -- Filled with food, love and beautiful landscapes!

This was a lovely and suspenseful romance, and what ultimately happens to the protagonist, Carmela, isn't revealed until the very last page. The settings in 1950s Sardinia are spectacular. The cooking scenes, of which there are many, are special treats -- it's almost impossible to read this story on an empty stomach. A well structured, at times magical narrative through the ruins and mountains of Sardinia, with appealing but complex characters.
