Narrator: Janet Suzman, Patrick Doherty

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 10 mins

Language: English

Release date: 03-09-17

Publisher: Whole Story Audiobooks

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

A début of extraordinary strength and power, Absolution shines a light on contemporary South Africa and the long dark shadow of Apartheid. In her lush garden on the Western Cape, Clare Wald, world-renowned author, takes up her pen and confronts her life. Ambitious young writer Sam Leroux has returned to South Africa to write Clare's biography. But how honest is she prepared to be? Was she complicit in crimes lurking in South Africa's past; is she an accomplice or a victim? As Sam and Clare turn over the events of her life, she begins to seek reconciliation, absolution. But in the stories she weaves and the truth just below the surface of her shimmering prose, lie Sam's own ghosts.

Critic Reviews:

"A rare combination of...literary triumph...Utterly captivating." (Steven Galloway)

Members Reviews:

Ambitious and assured debut novel

I find myself somewhere between the two leading reviews . Yes, it is a wonderfully textured novel, bnringing to life a large cast with skill and assurance. Flanery is also a very good recorder of space - as a South Afriican, I could not fault him on locations I know well. And he does more than record - he registers the feel of the place acccurately and sensitively . I suspect that most South Africans will feel, as I did, that the obsession with security is rather overdone in the novel - but then, perhaps we have just become used to a situation that must strike an outsider as bizarre.

There can be no doubt that Flanery has the makings of a very good novelist. But where I agree with Sid Nuncius is that it all does rather go on and on, with the result that instead of working up to a climax (I understand that a resolution is too much to hope for in this post-modern age) the novel just unwinds, leaving the reader - this reader- rather unmoved and incurious. The long sessions between Clare and her son, in particular, seem a somewhat unprofitable mulling-over of stale material. A shorter way of saying this is that the novel is simply too long, and tries, in the manner of first novels, to include too much.. Also, I 'm not sure -and I really do mean that I am not sure - that the elaborate four-strand structure adds enough to the novel to justify the effort on the reader's part, not to mention the writer's part.

I read the novel with interest and enjoyment, straight after Gordimer's "No Time Like the Present", with which it has a lot in common. To read the two in conjunction is fascinating - the youthful excess and care of the one, the haughty disregard of the niceties of style and punctuation of the other. In a way, it is sad to have to report that the young upstart is a far better read than the old pro.

Well-written but dragged on too long in the end

This book about South Africa spans the present and the past, interweaving the story of what might have happened to Laura, a young South African anti-apartheid activist 20 years ago, with the story of her mother, Clare, as she remembers the past. Clare is a well-known and aging novelist, who I would argue is drawn to resemble Nadine Gordimer. She has almost completely withdrawn from public life and battles with her past and how she might have been complicit in certain events. She has suffered not only the unexplained disappearance of Laura but also the loss of her own sister who was brutally murdered together with her husband.

Kritters Ramblings

Check out the full review at Kritters Ramblings

Two storylines going on at the same time in this book and I loved that they wind around each other the entire book and then completely combust near the end. Viven Lockhart is in both the present and historical storylines, in the historical storyline she is a retired starlet who has taken up residence in a beautiful Italian home with her husband and his sister and its worth reading the book to find out why the sister is in residence with the couple. In the present day, Lucy has some drama on her own so she decides to get away to this Italian home for a job and escape, but drama always finds you!

An atmospheric mystery with increasingly ominous overtones

Seamlessly weaving back and forth in time, The Silent Fountain by Victoria Fox is a vaguely sinister mystery which takes place in an isolated Tuscan mansion.

Needing to escape from London, Lucy Whittaker is hired to work for reclusive former actress, Vivien Lockhart in Italy. With no internet or cell service at the spooky mansion, Castillo Barbarossa, she is blissfully unaware of whether or not the mistakes from her past have been exposed. Instead of dwelling on her own problems, Lucy is instead extremely curious about what happened to Vivien and why she lives such a solitary life with no company other than her maid, Adalina and groundskeeper, Salvatore. After experiencing a few strange events she cannot explain, Lucy tries researching the history of Castillo Barbarossa and Vivienâs past. Finding little information, she teams up with Max Conti, Vivienâs former housekeeperâs nephew. When her personal life begins to implode, Lucy becomes more determined than ever to unearth the truth about Vivien and what happened at Castillo Barbarossa.

In the mid seventies, Vivien escaped her abusive father and fled to Hollywood where she discovered she had to a pay a pretty steep price for fame and fortune. Just as her life was spiraling out of control, she unexpectedly finds romance with Italian doctor, Giovanni âGioâ Moretti. Deliriously happy yet wary of his younger sister, Isabella, Vivien eagerly accepts his wedding proposal. Her dream wedding is marred by a vindictive act by Isabella and soon the three are ensconced at Castillo Barbarossa. Their initially happy marriage soon falters as Gio works long hours on a secret research project while Vivien grows increasingly frustrated by his refusal to believe Isabella is trying to drive Vivien away.

Members Reviews:

What's in store for Derek Lawson?

Roger is a friend of mine...and a fellow colleague in the wild, unpredictable world of radio broadcasting.

He has accomplished something I have always wanted to do...write a novel.

Roger is a very talented, skilled journalist with a great radio resume. LAWSON FOUND is his take on the world in which all of us grew up in and the times and events involved. Derek Lawson, his protagonist is making his mark in the world and his next step is his first in the business of broadcasting.

Every writing course I have ever taken usually started or ended with the instructor telling us to write what you know and in LAWSON FOUND the author..Roger Wood has done just that.

I know he has met many colorful characters in the biz and can hardly wait for LF2 to see what is in store for Derek Lawson.

One thing Rog, if you do include someone like me in a future tome and it gets turned into a movie...could I request George Clooney to play the role....lol.

Definitely a great, fun read...highly recommended.

Enjoyed this story!

I too know Roger!

This was not my usual type of book but I did learn a lot about Roger's alta ego. The story was also a trip down memory lane. I would recommend this book to my friends.

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 03-02-17

Genres: Fiction, Historical
