Great sense of time and place

Sally Garner has a very different take on historical fiction to most writers of such period stories - she has a remarkable ability to put herself in the position of characters of all social levels, even four hundred years ago. Add Juliet Stevenson's astonishing range of characterisations, and this becomes something very special. Well worth a listen.

Stunning

This is truly a fictional masterpiece. The settings, both of the fairy realm and particularly 1650's London are beautifully realised. The story deals brilliantly with such themes as religion and child abuse. At times I was moved to tears. Coriander is a heroin to love. Beautifully written and read, this book is an esential for any story collection.

Fairies meet historical fiction

This is a tale of fairies, but definitely not in a girly-pink-fairies-with-lace-wings way. It even has an evil stepmother in case you're not sure it's a fairy-tale!

The story is set during the time after the English Civil War when Oliver Cromwell wass in charge, and it gives a good sense of the turmoil during that time, both for the country as a whole, and for individuals, as families are torn apart.

I'm not sure it's suitable for young children, as there is some bit of brutality and child abuse in it, but it would be OK for young teens and older.

A great read for teens and adults alike.

A relaxing listen whilst on a train! Would highly recommend the beautiful work of Sally Gardner to anyone - reader or not, you'll be captivated by the imagery that Juliet Stevenson brings to life.

Lovely reading

Juliet Stevenson gives a gorgeous reading of a fascinating story by Sally Gardner. My biggest criticisms are that it was abridged and the ending seemed a little rushed but otherwise it was a very gripping listen. Arise Fell was a memorably horrible villain and his treatment of Coriander made my skin crawl. Juliet Stevenson really brought all the characters alive and I was totally immersed in Coriander's adventures both in Cromwellian London and the magical world.

This book, and all others by the same author, is a must for little girls between the ages of 6 and 11. I enjoyed them when I was a youngster , as did my own mother ! I have three little nieces who are being taught French and we introduced them to this book and others by La Comtesse de Segur..they fell in love too! Written hundreds of years ago, they have lost none of their charm or appeal. Simple stories where good deeds are always rewarded, where children across the ages still acted the same as our children do nowadays (less so though!).

A must, a classic of children litterature with none of the stuffiness that might entail!

Translating anything from one language is always fraught with uncertainty, even more so when translating Lewis Carroll's nonsense book "Alice in Wonderland". The Spanish is good, but I was saddened that there was no attempt to translated the, albeit wacky, poetry at all.

I bought the book to read this great book in another language. This translation is beautifully translated. I would recommend it highly to any Spanish reader and those learning the language.

A perfect story for daydreamers!

Kevin loves to daydream, but feels guilty when he gets caught doing it. One day he is surprised when his teacher becomes interested in his daydreams and asks him to write them down in a notebook.

Any little reader will find a connection with Kevin, making this a meaningful read. Although the punctuation threw me off at times, I really enjoyed the messages in this book. Also, I thought the illustrations were wonderful.

Teaches acceptance of a child's imagination and creativity -- very good.

I like the reality of Kevin's daydreams and how the teacher and Mom turn them into a creative activity. This is very accepting and encouraging on the part of sensitive adults in a child's world. We need more of that. I wish, though, that Mom said, "Well, WHEN you write another story" instead of "IF you write another story." Also, the name Kevin is too close to the teacher's name, Miss Calvin. I got confused a few times.

The title refers to seven lions; the story itself in one place mentions "six lions walked into the center ring." (Loc. 107). As good as the story is, it could use a careful editing for punctuation and grammar--there are quite a few problems in that area. Since this is a book for children, grammar and spelling are very important.

I mention these little problems because I'm sure the author wants to improve his book, but I don't want to detract from its vitality and message. These qualities are very good.

Reading this with and to our 2 sons was a great treat. Our eldest really grasped the understanding of imagination and after reading was inspired to begin writing his own story/book. Was an easy ready yet we enjoyed the details of Kevin's imagination as he often drifted off. Was great how the teacher worked with Kevin rather than shunning his imagination, how she guided it to be very fun for Kevin and even us reading it.

Kevin is a day-dreamer. Nothing wrong with that at all. Except that it's cutting into his school time and without a decent education he's going nowhere. What's a teacher to do? Bend him over and administer six of the best with a bamboo cane? Nope. Make him go stand in the corner with a pointy hat which says 'D' on it in 768 point Courier? Nope. Make him stay after school for detention, but don't tell his parents so they waste gasoline driving to the school to pick him up? Nope, they didn't even do that.
