We learn of the betrayal that made mortal enemies of House Atreides and House Harkonnen. Herein are the foundations of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, the Suk Doctors, the Order of Mentats, and the mysteriously altered Navigators of the Spacing Guild. Here is the amazing tale of the Zensunni Wanderers and here, too, is the planet of Arrakis, where traders have discovered the remarkable properties of the spice melange...
To emerge victorious over their brutal adversaries in the Jihad, the human race and its leaders have only the weapons of imagination, compassion, and the capacity for love. It will have to be enough.
    Critic Reviews:
"Offers the kind of intricate plotting and philosophical musings that would make the elder Herbert proud." (Publishers Weekly) "Required reading for Dune fans." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Just a hint of melange.
As a Dune junkie, I have read the "House" series from Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. So I knew what to expect with the audible version of Butlerian Jihad. A light, plot-dependent read with just enough respect to the original series to satisy my need for more info on the world of Dune. I knew it wouldn't have the depth, subtlety and richness of the original series, and it didn't. It is entertaining enough for a listen, but you'll be left wanting more.
    enoyed premise but not execution
I am a huge fan of the original Dune series by Frank Herbert. They were intricately written and exciting to read.
This book has only a touch of the original spark the Frank Herbert books did. I did enjoy, though, reading of the origin of a few of the concepts, people and history that were put forth in the original series. The plot held me for most of the book nearing the completion of the book I was simply waiting for it to be over.
What I thought took away from the novel most of all was the poor narration. Audible and other sources of 'audio books' have usually never failed to impress me with the actors who read from the book. Jim Dale comes to mind as an actor made to read books. The narrator for this book, while having a good voice and being able to properly hear all the words, did not have the same acting abiliities as I have become to expect from audio books. It was the odd time to hear a character have a different voice which made it seem inconsistent to even have any character voices at all.
Overall, this audible would be only for the true die-hard Dune fans who wish to have a glimpse at Frank Herberts ideas prequeling the original series.
Dune: The Search for More Money
I listened to this book when it first came out, and then again recently, when I had forgotten just how bad it was.
    The plot: boring and predictable.
    The characters: one-dimensional and annoying.
    The writing: stilted and repetitive.
Throughout the whole thing, I could hear the authors shouting "see? See what we did there? We made a reference to a person/place/thing mentioned in the original series! Isn't that *great*?"
I might have been able to overlook some of it if it hadn't been for Scott Brick. I really don't get why everybody loves him so much. He has a melodramatic, overblown style, which is a particularly poor fit for the awful writing in this book.
What bothered me most is that it didn't give me any insight into the original series.

    Narrator
I enjoyed this book more than most, and am now 1/3 of the way through my second listining. I almost didn't start it the second time because of the narrator.
Most of his vocal charactarizations were at least OK, even his Arnold imitation of the Merrik character got the point across that he wasen't an American. To show that he was Dutch, and use Goldmember's accent (Bring out Austin Power's Faaasha!) would have been too much. I can live with this one.
The use of a whispering voice for the Gordon character, who was key for many important science-type explainations, was the most annoying. I listen to AudioBooks while driving, and had to back up and shove my ear plug right up against my eardrum to hear what the character was trying to say. Also, whenever two of the other characters were involved in an 'aside' between themselves (like saying something they didn't want the others to hear), the narrator would actually either whisper, or lower his voice so much that I couldn't hear what was going on.
I gave the book a '4' for content and general listenability. I had to average in the '1' I gave for narration. The narrator should be required to listen to his own performance before being allowed to release this edition to the public.
Otherwise, I found the Quantum theory explainations to be facinating. "If you can explain Quantum Physics, you don't understand it yourself." Its so counter-intuitive, and trashes most or all 'Natural Laws', that explaining it at all was quite a streach. Good job here.
This book is a Cliff-Hanger, Sci-Fi, psudo-historical genre. If you don't like this type of fiction, don't buy it. Of course its going to be somewhat predictable. Naturally its going to be a 'damsel in distress' old movie seriel type of book. Expect it!
I liked especially the descriptions of Medevil France. I've read alot of histories, but none brought across the absolute brutality of this world as well as this author. Life back then was Short & Violent.
    Good Book, Bad Movie
Don't skip this book because you didn't like the movie. The book has a good story line and good character development. Enough detail so that you understand the plot (the movie was terrible in this regard). The book moved along at a good pace. It did get bogged down once or twice but not enough to distract from the story. Its not a masterpiece and won't become a classic but it is a good and entertaining book. I would recommend. By the way, the reader was excellent which adds to the enjoyment of the book.
entertaining story entwined with some real science
I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded this book as I had never previously read anything by Crichton. I was pleasantly surprised. The first part of the book combines real history with (mostly) real science and then, almost seamlessly flows into the fantasy/sci-fi story-line.

Very entertaining! I'm very much hoping the journey continues. This storyline has great potential to go places.
    the distant future
can't wait for book three, full of intrigue and gives us a view of what life would like if the dark ages plunge into barbàrism like the earth feel into at the gal of Roman civilisation in a fast of great space exploration!
Another great book by B.V. Larson
Loved it couldn't wait for the end couldn't stop listening to it and can't wait for the next book by Mr. Larson.
    another great one
this book was great can't wait for the next one I'll keep checking daily or weekly I can't wait to preorder the next one love the series great book what more can I say very very enjoyable
    Drg
I am a BV Larson fan who greatly enjoyed the Star Force Series and other works. This story and character is extremely juvenile in its writing and interactions. The main characters understanding of honor and his reactions to the environment is frankly ridiculous. The author's sexual encounters of military officers is also ridiculous. It seems that the captain always has to give an order two or three times before its followed. Maybe this was an early work because BV writings have not been so bad as this.

Nice potential but ultimately not satisfying
Very imaginative but far to much exposition. This on top of a hero who never seemed to understand anything and needed the exposition dumbed down to a 5th grade level made portions of the book seem endlessly repetitive.
The narrator did a wonderful job with what he had and would likely shine even brighter if given a more mature story.
Over all this is bearable because of the narration, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
    Def worth a credit
Very cool premise, enjoyed the first book a little more but this one is def worth a read. Very nice blend of sci-if, fantasy, hero type book. Cool spin on explaining religion etc. This book just doesn't have that "can't put down factor." Also I save my 5 stars for the truly epic books which is rare, so 4 star is most people's 5. My last two books were on the amazing level. "The Call" was a really fun fantasy/horror book, premise might not sound good but trust me I couldn't put it down, almost gave 5 stars. The truly epic 5 star book was "Awaken Online." I gave "Ready Player One" five stars and Awaken was even better!!
    The path of least resistance
The story of a man who takes the path of least resistance. Every hard decision is handled in a clumsy way. None of his choices at the end make a lick of sense.
I mean this guy just starts lecturing about taking the easy way out, but... read about his past in the first book, and he's no different. Give him a God complex and insane powers, and now all that is glossed over.
    What ever.
    Decent, but...
It's a decent read for many of the same reasons one woulda liked the preceding World Walker, and a lot of the loose ends are tied up, but imo it just didn't have the same flow and cohesion as the first... Still a good read, but you might be disappointed by some of the seeming disjointedness...
The sequence is better than the fist book. Amazing
Amazing story. Highly recommend it. Full of suspension. When you think it is finished there is more

    played out storyline
This series started out as one of the best ZA storylines written. Now it's less about Zs and more about impulsive non-tactical battles between US and Russian forces. I'm mititary, grew up in military family... this narrative is just fluff; feels like the author is extending a played-out storyline.
Loved the earlier stuff but the last couple of books are just rewriting the same dramstic arcs and conflicts over and over.
    Fuchs brings it again
It was great! Really fun listening and once again I find myself utterly mentally exhausted by all the twists and turns at the end of the story. Can't wait for book 13!!!
    best series on audible
honestly 8 out of 5 stars. R. C bray does an amazing job. The book and series is the best. only thing that could Top This is for HBO to bring it to life.
One of the best in this series! !
This is, without a doubt, the BEST zombie book series! I can't wait for more.
    very good series
finally some of the bad guys die and some of the good guys too. having people who always survive everything to live on to the next book starts to get really annoying. only complaint of the series.

    I like honorable heroes!
This is one of my favorite series and I look forward to see how the fleet will get back home. I guess you could criticize some of the redundancies found throughout this series (such as the retelling of Black Jacks 100 years in the freezer, or the delays caused by the limits to the speed of light, etc.) but I guess if you didn't include them, readers of later books, who did not read earlier books would complain. I also enjoy the interplay between the main characters and the voices provided to them by the narrator. If you like honorable heroes (like I sometimes do) you will like these books, if not, you might not. Enjoy!
I can't wait for the next book!
This series continues to get better after each novel.
If you enjoy space battles and sci-fi "war" novels, you can't go wrong with all of the Lost Fleet books.
The lost fleet is still wandering around...
    Originally posted at FanLit.
Black Jack Geary, the crew of the flagship Dauntless, and the other ships of the Alliance fleet are still wandering around in enemy territory, trying to get home (and reminding me a bit of that stupid show I loved when I was a kid: Lost in Space). Theyre worried about their stores of fuel, food and the material they need to create weapons. Theyre also worried about the Syndicate fleets, but theyve been successful enough so far that the Syndics are equally afraid of them. In Valiant, there are more Syndics to fight, civilians to rescue, and sabotage to discover. The Alliance fleet will also witness the terrifying collapse of a Syndicate hypernet gate and learn the truth about their suspicions of an alien presence that may be influencing the war from afar.
Personally Geary is still dealing with some treacherous ship captains and he must make some hard decisions about how to handle them. He also has a problem with the women in his life co-president Victoria Rione and Tanya Desjani, captain of Dauntless. Up to this point I mostly appreciated Campbells depiction of the women in his space fleet, but now theyre starting to act unprofessional. For such strong women, they sure can be catty!
Overall I continue to enjoy Jack Campbells LOST FLEET series. Valiant is the fourth book and while some of it is repetitive in both language and plot, and while some of the plot is really far-fetched (most of that having to do with how they manage to guess the intentions of their enemies and the aliens) it does serve to increase tension as we find out about the aliens and the potential danger in the hypernet gates.

Need anti- depressant meds after this series
What did you like best about Deathmatch? What did you like least?
Does anything ever go right in this series? Honestly, I think the only reason I keep listening is hoping something will be a victory. Every situation is ok , ok ,ok, this is going to work out,,,,,,,oh wait, the unexpected happened and things go wrong. How many more books can there be( can I stand) in this series?
What about R. C. Brays performance did you like?
    Performance is fine.
Do you think Deathmatch needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The series needs to be brought to a close. One way or another, enough is enough.
    Another Enjoyable Half-book
This is a great series, wonderful writing, mostly authentic and believable (after you accept the whole "zombie apocalypse, end of the world" premise), gripping and action packed. This book is another great listen, continuing the epic tale of tier one combat and survival in Russia and the Horn of Africa, while setting aside (I hope temporarily) the plight of the survivors in Britain. Narration by R.C. Bray is superb, like every one of his readings. R.C is first rate, one of my favorite narrators. I've made the decision to purchase books just because he's the narrator, and he never disappoints. This one is no exception to that rule. He makes the story and the characters come alive.
But this book, like most of the others in the Arisen series (and a rapidly growing number of other book series') is really just half a book. I give it 3 stars overall for just ending in the middle of a cluster of parallel and evolving action sequences, leaving the listener hanging. Again. There are four or more groups of operators in various parts of the world up to their eyeballs battling zombies, the Russians or both at the same time and Fuchs (or his editors) decide to just end the book mid-battle.

For eight bloody years, the Star Kingdom of Manticore and its allies have taken the war to the vastly more powerful People's Republic of Haven, and Commodore Honor Harrington has been in the forefront of that war. But now Honor has fallen, captured by the Peep Navy, turned over to the forces of State Security - and executed on the interstellar network's nightly news. The Manticoran Alliance is stunned and infuriated by Honor's death and grimly resolved to avenge it. But its military is over-extended and the People's Republic is poised to take the offensive once more. The war is about to enter a phase of unprecedented ferocity, and the Alliance is on the short end of the stick. But even as powerful Peep fleets hurtle towards their objectives, neither they nor the Alliance are aware of events occurring on a distant, isolated, inescapable prison planet called Hell. For what no one knows, not even State Security, is that Honor Harrington is not dead. She and a handful of her people are trapped on Hell, and determined to disprove the Peep boast that no one can ever escape it. Honor Harrington is going home, and taking her people with her - even if she has to conquer Hell to do it.
A Note from Author David Weber There's been some confusionnot to say, um, energetic debate, readers and fans being readers and fansabout the correct pronunciation of "Manticoran." The truth, alas, is that a stitch was dropped. An error occurred. A mistake was made and it wasn't Audible's fault. It was mine. Before Audible recorded the very first Honor Harrington book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded by e-mail but actually spoke to one another by phone. She wanted to make absolutely certain she had the correct pronunciations for names, places, star nations, etc., and I tried to make certain all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that "Man-ti-core-ahn" was pronounced "Man-tik-er-ahn." Exactly how this happened is more than I can say at this point, except to blushingly disclose that the original e-mail remains intact, confirming to all the world that it was, indeed, my fault. I can ascribe it only to a temporary mental hiccup on my part and crave your forgiveness. If, however, you must blame someone for the mix-up, that someone should be me and not Audible, who have done everything they could to get it right.

I am enjoying this series can hardly stand to put the story down. Echoes of Honor kept me holding on by my finger tips as she takes two years to escape the prison island. Her leadership ability bringing all the various people that have been in prison from various planets was interesting to watch. The battle scenes were great. Honor is beginning to remind me of Admiral H. Nelson of the British Navy.

Now, with a faction of his officers determined to eliminate this new threat at any cost, Geary must figure out how to breach the enemy's defenses so the fleet can reach the jump point without massive casualties - even though the enigmas could be waiting on the other side.

There is Still a Need for Black Jack
Here we have another successful outing by Mr. Hemry. I had mixed feelings about the end of Dreadnaught, and wondered just what might become of the Alliance Fleet after the end of the war. However, I needn't have worried, as the author has put our heroes on a journey that brings them in contact with truly alien species, while ratcheting up the tension over exactly what is going on back home.
This latest entry had quite a few surprises, including some genuinely laugh out loud moments, and a few touching exchanges, especially as relates to the personal burdens of service, resentments that build up between those who serve and those back home, and the uncertainties that befall a society upon the sudden onset of peace. And space battles, there are space battles, wonderfully well thought out spectacles that demonstrate the author's singular blend of imagination and methodical construction, which he hints at in the introduction. I can't wait for the next book.
Those who have followed the adventure since Dauntless can look forward to a treat. And those who have yet to start have another reason to pick up the series.
The lost fleet has found another winner.
The Blackjack Geary storyline continues with this latest book in the series, following the fleet past the extreme boundaries of Syndic Space and into the unknown. All in all, great story, great characters, brilliant conflict, and intense pace. The performance doesn't lack one bit.
Buy this series if you need a new escape.
    More Aliens!
I love military SF. The series of books by Jack Campbell that detail the adventures of now Admiral Jack Geary are like crack to me. Well written and carefully planned out, they show the breadth and depth of military operations as well as the human side of the force. The author doesn't cheat to make sure that battles are too easy, and every victory comes with a price.
After defeating the Syndicate in the first series, John and his fleet are sent out to explore and obtain more information about the Enigma race that was driving the actions of the Syndicate.
