Such a powerful story

Yes, I have recommended this book to several friends.

The story is amazing in it's stark realalism. Man's lust for gold is amazing. The pain and suffering for a relatively worthless metal is overwhelming. The cruelty is just shocking.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, the story teller, really won me over. I'd be proud to call him my friend.

Love and Ice

I listen in the car commuting 2 hours a day. This book kept my attention for hours. Boiled down it is a love story amid terrible circumstances. Historically accurate with very detailed character development often I would drive slower home just to listen to the next development.

Melodramatic

Very melodramatic with one dimensional characters and lots of inaccuracies in dealing the gold rush. Don't waste your money.

the story was a wonderful story the reader did a fabulous job I just don't understand why writers feel they have to include swear words which make the story inappropriate for a younger audience and distasteful to any Christian

Coming back into the mythos fray...

This Casca novel brought Barry Sadler back from the dregs of the last couple of novels. Better written all around. Perhaps because this was what Sadler knew firsthand more. I dunno.

Either way, this was one of those that could be a neat movie, the likes of Man On Fire. It was alot like that.

It Just Keeps Getting Better and Better

This is an excellent book. I enjoyed reading it and have found that when you read an excellent series of novels written by an author with skill and creativity, you grow to know and understand the characters. I am a big time reader and I.J.Parker is just such an author that each book builds on the last one and yet stands alone. Each book introduces the reader to more information of the complex cultural setting of 900 or so A.D. Japan. Consequently, each book creates an expectation of intrigue, history, mystery, love and mayhem. I have never really liked stories set in Japan, nor have I ever really liked historical novels set way back in history. But the Akitada series is a huge exception. I love them. These are interesting books and Black Arrow is superb.

Good even if not quite as good as usual

Historical Mystery - Japan

Sent as deputy governor to the northern province of Echigo, Akitada and his lieutenants find a warlord and his corrupt allies running things, ready to do whatever it takes to eliminate Akitada's interference.

Political infighting has always been an element of the Akitada stories, but in this one it takes center stage. The murders are incidental to Akitada trying to impose Imperial rule with no money and no military or popular support, and the story didn't hold me as much as usual. I also didn't find Akitada's moments with his wife either engrossing or relevant to the story. As always, a superb re-creation of a time of which most Westerners are ignorant. Spelling, grammar, and Kindle formatting are fine.

Our Hero Faces Danger Again!

This is the Third book in the series. Sugawara Akitada is sent to what is now Niigata prefecture which is north of Tokyo along the Sea of Japan coast. He is accompanied by his pregnant wife and his loyal sidekicks. Akitada is not given the welcome he expects and finds himself embroiled in several dangerous dramas from which he and his wife and friends might not escape.

For me, this is a very enjoyable series. If you like adventure taking place in other countries in long ago times you might like this book and the series. If you are a nitpicker about 11th century Japan historical details you might want to read something else.

This series is so interesting. It just gets better & better as you are transferred into the life of Japanese of old. You'll not only enjoy the mystery but you will also learn about Japan & the way its people think. I'm reading this series back to back.

A Nice Enough Romance ( and I HATE Romances)

This does not start like your standard romance and it doesn't end like it either. Which is to its favor. There is also a subplot ( although I'd have liked to see it developed more) that has nothing romantic about it.

However, I was terribly weary of how very much these people were attracted to each other. Endlessly.

All of this need to take into account that I normally never read romance, and I generally loath it as being sadly delusional.

The accent was charming and appropriate. And the writing was written to be read aloud which I did appreciate.

It was a very interesting look into India in the Raj days, and that was what got me through. If you like romances, I suspect you'll like it very much.

The book could use more silence

In a great book, the author knows what to leave unsaid. This book would be improved by cutting half the overly detailed and sometimes overwrought description. You could practically hear the violins playing in the background when hero and heroine meet. We already know from previous heavy hints that they are to be star-crossed. Description sets scene and mood, but each detail should also serve a purpose in moving the story forward. There may be an engrossing story buried here, but I lost interest.

Loved this audiobook

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. I read not so great reviews somewhere else. So I was pleasantly surprised. The narrator really makes this book a great listen! I have now heard all of Indu Sundaresan's books on audible and I really enjoyed them.

Just loved this book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Splendor of Silence to be better than the print version?

I absolutely loved this book. I must admit it was a bit slow at first, but when I finished the book I re-listened to the first 2 chapters and they were bitter sweet after hearing the whole book and knowing the ending.

The narrator is unknown until the end of the book, and is beautifully revealed. It is a really beautiful storey and worth the listen.

I loved the performers various accents, the rich detail of landscape and food in India

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the only real love scene between Mia and Mike.

her narration is wonderful. Many narrators have atrocious accents, but she is wonderful at all accents, emotions, and even narrative passages. I enjoyed this book, but her narration improved it immensely.

I remember now why this is my favorite Lively

I first read this book in 2009. It was the first book I had read by Penelope Lively. Since then I have read and enjoyed many other novels by her but never came across one I like as much as this one. So much the case that I thought maybe I was overstating my enthusiasm for Consequences, perhaps remembering it to be something better than it is. But no. Listening to the audio version not only reminded me why I love this book, but it makes me love it even more.

It's a Multi-generational saga of a slightly non-conformist family in England. Action begins in the 1930s and ends in the early oughts.

Wasn't a big fan of the narrator. Quite robotic. But not so annoying that I didn't enjoy it.

Lovely book but not a classic

I've been reading through some of the great English authors: Trollope, Dickens, etc. Penelope Lively is not in their league. But she creates a lovely story here, and it is worth reading.

Consequences ranks among the highest of all my 'listen' books. Author, narrator and story!!!This was a dark horse for me and I have been pleasantly surprised

What did you like best about this story?

There is an easy flow from one generation to the other with each making the reader seem so much a part of the lives of the characters. The author's historical content was outstanding and woven in with the fictional portion one would think these were actual characters being written about. Its difficult to put time into a character in order to convey the atmosphere of that era, but this has been done very will with the utilizing of one family and the extended characters, Kudos too, go to the narrator. Her flow from character to character was smooth and easily done and no question whose role was being taken. Outstanding all the way around. Best about the story-the whole thing!!
