Fabulous story, excellent narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen from start to finish. Sandra Kring's writing is superb, and the narrator does a wonderful job of bringing it to life. I'm going to look for more by this author.

Fine read

A fine book. Simply told. Great reader. Nicely balanced ending.

By coincidence, I read this after reading Army at Down. The historical background of Operation Torch gave me insight and personalized the turmoil that was the collective experience of WWII. Made this novel particularly moving. I recommend this book.

Good little quick story

Narrated by one brother who suffered brain injury during a childhood illness, this story begins a few years before WWII and through the early post-service years of the other brother. Typical small town characters with small town gossip, secrets and family love. This is a quick listen with some beautiful and sometimes funny insights looking back on those days as illustrated by someone who is referred to as "simple-minded".

Great characters!

She does a great job keeping the pace and telling it from a young man's perspective. If you like historical fiction, this is a winner. Made me and my husband laugh and cry a few times. Loved this book!

Wonderful story! Perfect narration!

I loved the story and the fabulous narration by Kirby Heyborne so much that I have listened to it multiple times! It is such a great combination of sad and funny! The characters are so realistic and the portrayal of the time around and during World War II are perfect and heart warming!

Interesting Medieval romance novel...

This book is quite long to listen to but well worth the time. It kept my attention. The only thing I suggest is to listen to the first two books first. They're not sequels but the characters are also in the first two novels.

bodice ripper; thin on authentic history

Some books are carefully researched historical fiction. No sign of research here. Both the slim plot and sketchy history only serve as a backdrop to poorly created characters who engage in hot sex. Perhaps a out loud reading of the steamy parts will make up in art what the novel lacks in substance. The reader does a good job without increasing the silliness of the whole thing. I write this to warn those who enjoy more thoroughly historical novels.

Really enjoyed this book

This is the third book of the three "...to Me" series by Josie Litton. This book would appeal to a lot of different readers, but romance readers especially. I thought that the storyline moved along quickly and didn't get boring.

I am sad that this story is over

I love this series this was a wonderful way to end it. Wish we could hear more on how they're doing the rest of their lives I think it takes an amazing author to take a story and make you feel as though you know them

This is a beautiffuly written account of Noah's life; it tells a beautiful tale of Noah's struggle and determination to remain faithful to God despite his weakness. And the narration is superb

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the reader, too. It's interesting and I will now go read the real story of Noah and see how much is real and how much is make believe.

The beginning of an amazing partnership and love

I have always loved the story of Noah.

It was an exciting, miraculous story

of how the good guys win and the bad guys

won their just deserts....

As I became older, the concept of justice and

mercy made this story more complicated and

this is what I appreciated about the "Heart of a Lion".

It was a hard thing for a human man to comprehend the working of the Creator. The difference between how the mind of God and the mind of humanity saw good and evil, happiness and safety, and yes justice and mercy.

Noah looked for the heart of God and so developed a steadfast (great old word) trust in Him.

The old story unfolds with fresh heart wrenching yet heart warming twists. The characters are all neighbours, friends and family. Real hearts and minds are involved, for good or ill.

It made me appreciate the confusion man can come to without knowing (in the real sense) a different supreme Being.... Someone who doesn't think like a human, but very, very clearly.

What does that look like?

It's hard, but He is good.

It was great to meet Methusalah and hear his take on his dad Enoch...how his long life impacted on the next generations, especially Noah. It was so much fun.

Aso, I loved the concepts of the new, primitive world, close to creation, fallen, yet amazing.

It was so plausible, even probable and I really enjoyed it.

Excellent, Wonderful Book!

This book gives an excellent view of what Noah's early life might have been like. Who knows how close this author may have come to the realness of his life. He was human and did live a natural life in his allotted time. Great man, great man of God, Great listening of how it could have happened for him. I loved this book.

Good story, horrible narration!

Homer Hickam is one of my favorite authors. I actually took my son to Coalwood, WV to see the town Hickam describes in his Rocket Boys book and sequels. This story is different, since it is not autobiographical. Again, I think the story line is strong and entertaining. Living in North Carolina, I wanted to read a book which links a favorite author to my home state.

The narration by Michael Kramer is horrible, however, to the point of making listening distracting and frustrating. While Kramer has an incredible reading voice, his narration is dry and without any inflection, even when exciting events are taking place. But what really bothered me the most are the accents he uses for characters in the story. Granted, there are many characters, and Hickam descibes their accents as "Outer Banks brogue." However, the characters in the narration are constantly shifting tone and accent. Most of the main characters speak a sort of British Cockney accent with a slight Southern drawl, although at times it is all Cockney and at times is is all drawl. One time a character speaks has no bearing on how they will sound later in the story, and even within sentences the accents shift back and forth. Altogether, I found this very distracting, since I was focusing more on the accents than the plot.

Overall, I would suggest reading the book if you want a good story. The 3 star rating is the average of a 5 for the book and a 1 for the narration.

A good OBX yarn from a lost era

I have been spending time on the Outer Banks for years and every once in a while, I got a glimpse of how different and fascinating the area around Morehead city was in the 1920's-1940's. "The Keepers Son" is a great story with great characters set in a time on the Outer Banks that is long gone.

Volcanoes, travel in the Andes, icebergs

Good lengthy account of travelling through the Peruvian Andes which takes away from the nautical in nautical fiction. Another account of getting caught in the ice during fog around Cape Horn. Another loss of a rudder in the southern latitudes and another sea battle that almost happened. There were two sea battles actually; an incredibly easy one in the beginning and an incredibly non-existent one near the end. This book felt mostly like it was just another in a series of filler material. As I always say, the writing is excellent and it shows such an incredible amount of research necessary to tell the story in such detail. I have to admit to tiring of the perpetual filler material in each of the last three books. I hope O'Brian gets back to writing nautical adventures in this series. This is another book you could easily live without in this series if you so chose.

Hold on to your guide ropes, more high seas adventure awaits.

The continuing adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin is nothing short of irresistible, dynamic pleasure. Storms, prizes, enemy vessels and spies, you'll inhale this installment of our favorite sailing duo.

Wonderful reading as you feel a member of the crew yourself.

A fascinating adventure, with prose as good as Dickens and lots of knowledge abut the 18th century, the Royal Navy, feats that ordinary men could routinely perform and the hardships and cruelties they endured. Must read all the books!

The best series even written

One has to be a lover of Patrick O'Brian to appreciate Book 16 of this sea-going, Napoleonic War series. If you are on Book 16, you already know what I mean. It is wonderful, adventurous, humorous and a definite page turner. You will never read novels as well written as O'Brian's works. If you haven't read any of the Aubrey/Maturin novels, you must begin at the beginning with "Master and Commander". Sit back and enjoy these great tales for months, even years to come.

Hint: Don't get upset if you don't understand the operation of the ship, with it's rigging and sails and masts. The reader doesn't have to most of the time. Just be amazed that Mr. O'Brian understood it all. Perhaps by Book 10 you will comprehend it better.

Four Stars

Good read. Entertaining. I like the genre of books. Is this enough writing to satisfy the min words needed?

Should not be sold as is

I purchased this because it was the only version available in Canada as of July, 2009. Not only is the narrator absolutely terrible at pronouncing nautical words but it is quite a severe abridgment. Cut scenes include the entire last battle for which the book has received excellent reviews in print! Until Audible gets its act together and offers book 15 to 21 in Canada I will vote with my dollar and abstain from Audiobooks! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Teriffic book, outstanding production

I have been an avid audiobook listener for many years, and this is truly the best I've ever heard. The narrator is spectacular and the book is every bit as wonderful as the narration. I can't say enough good things about this production.

one of my favorites

I loved ths audio book. I listened to it while driving from Minneapolis to Los Angeles and it made the time fly by. A great epic story perfect for anyone who likes historical fiction or anyone who was a tomboy.

Magnificent, perfect for these troubled times

Funny -- when this book first came out, I, being a confirmed Jane Smiley fan, bought it, a paper copy, but try as I might, I couldn't get into it. I abandoned the book maybe 50 pages in. A few years later, I was in the local public library and saw they had the book on cassettes. I needed a long audiobook, so I checked it out. What a difference!

Anna Fields makes all the difference -- hearing "Lidie" tell us her story makes it all the more personal and intimate. Ms. Fields voice is ideal, not too cultured, not too much of a twang, just the way I'd expect Lidie to sound. I just finished listening to "The All True Adventures" again, this time on Audible, and know I'll go back to this one over and over. It's a classic.

In an interview, Smiley said she wrote this book as a romance, which, I suppose, it maybe is, given the basic fact that Lidie and her just-met husband depart for the dangerous and embattled "KT" - Kansas Territories --on their wedding night, and one of the book's themes is their getting to know each other, literally.

But it isn't just the tale of the 'newlyweds -- newly-mets, in fact -- that's compelling. It's the story of the times, just before the "official" start of the War Between the States, when the "goose question" reigned supreme. The "goose question"? Back then, in the 1850's, in Missouri, Kansas and other 'border' states, the question of slavery was simply too hot to touch, too contentious to even pronounce the word. You couldn't come right out and ask someone what their politics were, for fear of starting a personal war, right then and there. So you used an euphemism instead, asking what their position on "the goose question" was -- and the answer better be right, with "right" depending where, specifically, you were standing. A wrong answer could -- and many times did -- get you killed.

Lidie's tale of what it was like to "settle" a new land -- a kind of "Little House on the Prairie", Kansas style.

Boring and pathetic

James Webb wrote a great book - "Fields of Fire" - about the Vietnam war. The Emperor's General is pathetic. The author must have become bored with his subject halfway through the book, and then decided to try to end it gracefully. There were no engaging twists or dramatic turns, interesting dilemmas or real personal conflicts. Everything sounded contrived, as if this was the first manuscript by an aspiring writer. The narrator was horrible! He tries to impersonate a young Japanese girl by lisping softly and an aged Japanese general by simply lisping. I regret wasting my time listening to this.

Too short for deep development

I liked the book. If you are looking for deep analysis of WW II or McArthur you are reading the wrong book. I checked the history and it is very accurate and I liked the frame story of a young officer. I didn't like the narrators Japanese accent but that is a minor disagreement. As I said in the title, I thought the characters, historical and fictional, could have used more developing.

Gave up after about 1.5 hours

This is a love story from the author's personal life mixed with a biography of MacArthur. It did not work for me at all. At the 4th mention of his girlfriend's breasts (not necessarily a bad thing in some literary contexts), I shut it off.

Post-WWII Western works just right

I've read a few Monte Dutton novels, and this one stands at the top of the heap. The post-WWII Western is an interesting angle, and there are enough twists and turns to keep you moving right through this read. The story, characters and action could turn "Cowboys Come Home" into a heck of a screenplay. Dutton keeps the story lean enough to where it moves along, but his narrative and dialogue paint a vivid picture of what returning home from a gruesome war would be like. Highly recommended.

Another fun yarn spun by master storyteller Monte Dutton. It was interesting that Becky was made to be a one of the heroes of the book. Monte does his best with the Everyman character battling against the elite to just live their lives.

Two for Texas

Monte clearly knows Texas. His western brings to mind such legendary characters as Gus and Woodrow, Gideon and Johnny.

Monte did it again. Great book could not put it down. Read it in 2 days. Hope he keeps them coming

Skipped some of the book. A little disappointing but still fun to listen to. I would have liked the full version.
