How to Improve and Maximize Sleep with Sleep Psychologist, Dr. Yishan Xu

Listen Later

Sleep is critical to our health and wellbeing, but we often take it for granted until we develop insomnia or another sleep disorder.  Unfortunately, when we can't sleep, we begin to develop anxiety that further compromises our ability to have restful sleep.

To explore this topic more, for this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, behavioral sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Yishan Xu joined us in an in-depth conversation on sleep and how to improve it.

We first discussed the latest research on sleep cycles and what we know about deep sleep versus light sleep versus REM sleep.  Dr. Xu shared some light on the fact that only about 15% of our sleep is deep sleep and about 20% is REM sleep.  More deep sleep does not mean it's better for our health!

We also explored other sleep myths including the thought that we should all go to bed early.  Dr. Xu explained the different chronotypes of people that lead some to respond to going to sleep early but others have the genetics that prefer going to bed in the early morning.  She also dispelled the myth that we all need 8-9 hours of sleep per night.  Some need that much, but others might need more or less than that.

We also talked about blue lights, caffeine, sleep trackers and so much more!

Dr. Yishan Xu, is a licensed clinical psychologist, and the founder and director of Mind & Body Garden Psychology, Inc.
