Refreshingly different take on mystery novel

This novel is a refreshing change from hard boiled detective fiction. The characters are well developed and the main character who narrates the story is truly human and believable as both a pub landlord and sleuth. The pace of the story seems just right and the reader is spared from needless details to keep the story flowing and alive. A great read when you want a book you can pick up for an hour and use to switch off from work.

Very light & easy to listen to will be listening to more from the same author. Really liked the main character.

Hard work all through. Strange way to write a book but probably appeal to some people!! Definitely a different mind set to me though!! Listen to a sample before buying is my advice

Quite simply the story for any woman!

One of the funniest, thrilling and most ostentatious stories, made all the better by having Louise Brealey read it to me. The characters came to live with her use of voices and I truly fell in love with Johanna/Dolly. An inspiration in novella.

Fantastic narration of highly entertaining story

A supremely funny, filthy and clever book - and made one hundred per cent moreso by the flawless narration. Great stuff!

Beautifully written and performed.

I love Caitlin's refreshing frankness but having read some of her other work there were moments of déjà vue.

The performance would be hard to top.

Good story hampered by horrible accents

Obviously the performer isn't from Missouri. At times

The main character screeched and at times I couldn't hear her. Irritating accents. I got to chapter 3 and am done.

I like it. =-)

I liked the story line and it kept me interested until the end. It's sort of depressing but interesting. I liked the narrator. She did a good job portraying the characters.

I am a huge fan of Raffaella Barkers books and was excited to see her on Audible..sadly I found the delivery by the reader to be very difficult to listen to. His voice is rather robotic with no feeling.

I am going to buy this book and read it to myself.

Enjoyed spending time in this world

This book just drew me in, not entirely sure, it was just very well written and I enjoyed the distinctly Southern flavor.

Dissappointed, not as good as Her other books.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wasn't keen on the narrators voice when she was her daughter, very annoying sounded 5 years old not 20! The story took ages to get going and then finished rather rushed and left me uninterested and bored.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Wonderful description about the island.

The Narrators voice distracted me from the story.

I was so looking forward to this book, as I had listened to The Invention of Wings and read The Scene the Life of Bees. Unfortunately the narrator's inflections made the main character sound very smug and insincere, so much so that I could not continue listening. I may read the book as I was enjoying the story.

Not her best work

That might be an unfair title, but after the brilliance of her other novels I've read I felt a little let down by this one.

The thing that kept me going was that the turmoil Jessie felt was identifiable to me. Though as I'm going through it currently it could have been deeper, a lot of time flew by without acknowledging the crossroads she felt she was at. We didn't really learn much about the other characters either, they could have had amazing back stories.

I didn't dislike the book, I just felt it could have been deeper.

Brillant

Would you listen to The Last Hour again? Why?

I'll definitely listen to this audiobook again. This is my favourite book by Charles Sheehan-Miles and both narrators did an outstanding job bringing it to life. I was able to feel all the emotions while listening.

Yes, it made me cry, a lot. There are parts that made me sob like crazy. But there are also parts that made me laugh.

enjoyable engaging read

I really enjoyed this as I do most of what Jody Bottum writes. This was a little different than his usual.

It was a nice read with fully fleshed out charactors and I enjoyed it. I liked the direction the plot took, resistence to doing the right thing then following through to the end. Think about it for next Christmas.

Joseph Bottum Reviving Art of the Short Story

I am a friend of Joseph Bottum, full disclosure. Still, if I didn't like Nativity, I would just have not written a review.

Bottum's story demonstrates that the good one is given to do in life often comes at unexpected times and in unlikely places. It is never too late to do good.

One of the best short stories I have read in some time

This was my introduction to Joseph Bottum and I was deeply moved by this story. The story is interesting, the characters seem real and the ending was very touching. One of the best short stories I have read in some time.

Another Hit

Bottum once again tells a Christmas tale for the ages. Last year our family read Wise Guy, much to our delight. This year it will be Nativity. No need to ask what 2014's selection will be.

Quite a modern twist to the average holiday tail.

I loved it! It was funny, tragic, and yet still had a happy ending. It was a create holiday read.

Great Mystery, interesting back drop

What a great story!!! I am from a golf family and was impressed with the setting and learned more about one of the most famous golf tournaments! It was a great mystery and I couldn't figure out "who done it" or why, which is GREAT in a thriller.

Get this book!
