Dino Marnika just does not provide the ambiance that is given by Peter Hosking.

Love the Cliff Hardy stories read by Hosking more than me reading the hard copy. His performance makes the stories great.

Peter Corris has won the Australian Ned Kelly Award for his crime writing.

Set in a Sydney and streets I have known I have enjoyed all I have heard and I would love to hear more. with Hosking telling it.

Lots of Australian idiom and references that place each story in an historical time.

Having trouble getting into this book

I have read all of the Death on Demand series as well as the first book of the Henrie O series. I loved all of the DOD books, but not really enjoying this series. I was not enthralled after reading the Henrie O first book, but I thought that I'd give the second one a try anyway. After purchasing this book three days ago, I am on page 165 of 338 pages and still am waiting for something to happen. There's so much blah blah with the characters, but the plot seems stalled. That seemed to be the way of the first Henrie O book. Don't know if I'll finish the book, or look for another author. I like to read books that are part of a series, so I guess I'm off on a quest.

Working Vacation Weekend

A lovely afternoon read with maybe the best character Carolyn Hart has created.

Hard to put down

This is a great book. Here's what is great about it:

1. pacing is slow but steady. It give the reader a chance to digest what is going on, who everyone is, how everyone is connected. The story is not rushed at all. It just naturally unfolds.

2. the writing is easy to read and follow. There isn't a lot of jumping around, except for the main character who is quite ADD. "Focus."

3. the storyline is believable and plausible. It all makes sense. And the whodunnit isn't obvious!

4. the sequel is not a necessary read. It's a "I want to read more because I like the characters and I am now invested in what happens to them." There are a few unfinished story points that would be nice to have a resolution.

5. the female character is not annoying, not overly strong, not overly dumb, no overly anything. She's just a normal woman who is a Chicago Police Detective with a normal family. Refreshing!

I found the book hard to put down. The short chapters were helpful. The mixing up of storytelling between three characters was a good balance. I am eager to read on!

Slow starter makes up some lost time

When first starting this book something felt very out of place. First of all, it is definitely a slow starter (but the pace picks up later in the book). It also seems like it's going to be too creepy (too bloody) for some Christian readers but that levels off as well. What I couldn't figure out was why I was having so much difficulty getting into the skin of the protagonist. Kristen seemed likable, a little jaded and sarcastic but not objectionably so, but I was having trouble feeling the kinship. Then I discovered that M.K. Gilroy is male and I think he had some difficulty getting into his character's skin at first so the early portions of the book seem a little stilted. However, fortunately, either this reader adjusted or Mr. Gilroy did and Kristen settles in nicely after about the first fourth or so of the story. I thought the ending a little anticlimactic. I thought too much was given away in the latter chapters of the book and it would have made a much better read if the true identity of the killer (and his relationships to others in the story) were kept secret until closer to the end.

1970's pulp!

This is an out of print book and not one of Block's best known characters. Chip Harrison only has two murder mysteries (the Tulip Caper), and there's two lame 'Catcher in the Rye' coming of age books (what a waste). If you like Bernie Rhodenbarr, then you'll like Chip Harrison. If you like Matthew Scudder, well this probably isn't for you. The only other place I could find Chip Harrison stories were in the short story collection 'Enough Rope'.

I like the older ones better

I am a Lawrence Block fan. I like the older ones better. Not positive about this but I heard that Lawrence Block passed away years ago and his son is writing the newer books. I don't know for SURE so not to spread rumors.

A low-rent Nero Wolfe knock-off

Lawrence Block's homage (of sorts) to Rex Stout and Nero Wolfe. It doesn't so much imitate as try to update (circa 1974) the basic story concept. It comes across as something of a low rent, almost seedy Nero Wolfe knock-off with a lot of sex going on. At times it seems more satire than homage while at other times it just seems odd. If I were the kind of person who gave up easily I would have cast this book aside in the first 30 pages, it just wasn't appealing to me... frankly, if it weren't written by Lawrence Block I probably would never have been motivated to finish it.

The Nero Wolfe surrogate Leo Haig is a comic character, bumbling and inept in many ways (board games, pipe smoking and propping his feet on his desk) but apparently sharp in the ways of deductive reasoning. The Archie Goodwin stand-in is Chip Harrison a young man with very active hormones who seems intent on "scoring" every chance he can, he's much less witty and charming than Stout's Goodwin (surprising since author Block can and does write very humorous and clever dialogue in his other series) and seems to be more of a clueless bystander than anything else. Had the Harrison character been more likable or even less one dimensional the book could have been much more interesting.

The mystery is okay, it's not the kind where the reader is given all the clues needed to solve it, it sticks to the Wolfe formula of having all the suspects gathered in one room for the final solution to the case. It's average at best. I doubt I'll try any of the other books in this series.

AN ENTERTAINING STORY

The story was enjoyable. I'm still not sure if it was a satire on the Nero Wolf mysteries or if Lawrence Block was paying homage to the fat genius. Either way, it was entertaining. I loved the way all the suspects were gathered in a room for the grand finale - pure nostalgia.

Pretty good

In Death of an Obnoxious Tourist, Dotsy Lamb, a recently divorced woman from Virginia, traveling with her friend Lettie in Italy. The tour group includes a very annoying woman who manages to alienate everyone in the group. The annoying woman is killed and we quickly killed and we learn that there are many people on the tour who had motive.

This is an entertaining story. The characters are likeable and believable. I like the idea of a mystery taking place on a group tour in Italy. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It was a bit clumsy. Otherwise it was a good read and a good buy.

Decent start to a series

Dotsy works for me as an amateur sleuth, though the theme of being dumped by a spouse in middle age (another character suffers the same fate, only worse) is rather overdone. Also, I had trouble keeping track of the many characters on the tour, but that might've been easier reading the print edition. Connie Terwilliger did a good job with the narration, so I'm sorry that she doesn't read the rest of the series.

horrible accents-the Italian ones were so phoney, the Americans were whiney and nasal, made it hard to pay attention to the story, which was boring.

A Pleasant Surprise

This is a pleasant cozy mystery. I was surprised by how delightful the characters and plot seem to be. I also like the back drop Milan, Venice, Florence, and Capri. I have been on a tour similar to the one the characters enjoyed and found the story to be very realistic. This is worth the credit and time.

Shocking but brilliant!

I couldn't wait to get started on the 2nd book in this Grant County series and I wasn't disappointed in anyway! Kisscut is shocking in places but kept me engaged the whole time and every time I finished a chapter, I couldn't wait to start the next! The subject is dark but the book is brilliant and Karin Slaughter yet again has done herself proud. Now can't wait to start the next one!

Chilling story

Karin Slaughter's story draws you in, despite the feeling that you're so uncomfortable with it. The characters are strong and your emotions run high on times. Good can't quite overcome evil because the effects on individuals is horrendous. Apart from some odd voices, the narrator did well. I became distracted for a few chapters when the recording had an echo. Otherwise it was a worthwhile experience.

Curl up, grab a cuppa and relax

Agatha Raisin fans won't be disappointed - just what we've come to expect; gentle humour, mild peril and some - almost accidentally - successful detecting from the Cotswolds' favourite sleuth.

If you're after page-turning, white-knuckle, extreme thrillers or whodunnits then Mrs Raisin is not for you; if you enjoy Murder She Wrote, Poirot and Stephanie Plum them this is probably right up your alley. Gentle, enjoyable and comforting rather than stupa ting and challenging; I've meanly held off one star on storyline as there are no massive surprises in an Agatha Raisin (mostly because there's a limited number of new characters in each one so it's always one of them for some reason or another!) but fans of Aggie will know that this isn't the appeal or the point - highly recommended for a grey winters day; stick it on, curl up with a cuppa and relax in your Jim-jams... Perfect!

I enjoyed listening to P K , the plot on the other hand not so much , sadly.

Disappointing

I am a great admirer of Penelope Keith, but this was not her finest hour. The dialogue was rushed in places, and her attempts at characterisation and dialect were embarrassingly atrocious.

I know that this is supposed to be lighthearted fiction, so I was not expecting a serious detective story in the genre of P D James, but even so, I found the plot clumsy and meandering.

A friend had recommended the Agatha Raisin books, so I was extremely disappointed.

Likely my last Charlie Hood novel...

I have read/listened to all of the previous Charlie Hood novels as well as the Merci Rayborn series from this author and generally enjoy Parker's novels. Unfortunately, the continued interactions with the Mike Finnegan character means this will likely be my last. I believe it was somewhere in Book 3 that an otherwise interesting story went Twilight.

I have purchased the last two books hoping that there would be some sort of believable resolution to the meddlesome and wholly unbelievable (and annoying) Finnegan but it seems he is in for the long haul. If you are open to books about otherworldly notions, the novel may still be interesting but I found it off-putting, distracting, and don't feel that this aspect of the book adds anything to the story.

Mike Finnegan aside, the general plot didn't feel at all compelling. There many elements in the story that either didn't seem believable (despite my lack of drug-lord interactions) or don't really move the plot along in any meaningful way -- Hood's journey to the castle, Heredia's narcos, the McKenna-Armenta interactions. I quite enjoyed Iron River and the previous books and wish Parker would return to this style.

Impatient

I just finished this book, as usual Iris Johansen did an excellent job. That being said it left me wanting more. I hate waiting for the next book. I think I would have preferred waiting to read this until the next book was available. I am anxious for the outcome.

I loved the story but hated the ending!! The narrator did a great job with different voices.

Books in this series are toooo short!

The overall story is very good as usual for this series, however, the books seem to be shorter and shorter as if to prolong it. After listening to this one, I just bought the paper books 2nd hand. I've read the books of Eve, Bonnie, etc. and the last three could have been combined to make a fantastic book.

I don't really have a favorite character, their individual stories are usually fast paced and interesting. I'd just like to have more in each book.

Just a thought . . .

Eve will finally find out the truth about Bonnie.

Although, I do enjoy reading myself... I was nice to listen to the 3 books in order. I feel that I enjoyed the story but the narrator had areas where she didnt sound natural. But, all in all its was read clearly, and I enjoyed listening to all three books as johanson completes the story revolving around Bonnie.

What other book might you compare Eve to and why?

Ive been an Eve Duncan follower for quite some time. And, I cant say that I like one over the other but J.D. Robb character Eve Dallas in her in Death Series is another one of my favorites.

Which scene was your favorite?

Probably the end scene with Bonnie inviting Eve back to the valley where Bonnie was buried by her grand father.
