The WORST narrator ever

To be fair, I cannot rate the book itself because I couldn't get through it. I love Mark Billingham's books, and Robert Glenister has been the perfect narrator -- gets all the accents, the voices, the rhythms of speech. This narrator -- why would they use an American narrator for a book in which a range of accurate British accents is so important? -- speaks at the speed of molasses, goes in and out of accents (when he bothers to take a stab at them -- mostly he butchers them) and makes the book boring. Because I like Billingham's work and am interested in reading this new stand-alone, I will buy the printed book and enjoy it that way -- life is too short to listen to a narrator butcher a book. Who picks these people?

A good story, not so well told...

The Woods is an interesting yarn, with enough twists to keep you listening until the end, but along the way there are also a number of frustrations and strange choices that may confuse and detract from the experience.

The first and most obvious point worthy of note is the slightly bizarre way in which the producers have chosen to cast the 'actors' for this tale. Rather than a single narrator doing all the voices, or an ensemble cast delivering a more dramatised version of the book, there is instead one male and one female narrator. During chapters when the main male character is most prominent, the male narrator takes his turn. When the female lead character is the main focus, the woman reads to us. What totally messes up this seemingly smart idea though, is that there are other important characters that can crop up at any time in any chapter, but are sometimes voiced by the man, and sometimes by the woman using different tones and accents, leaving you thinking 'hang on a minute - that guy didn't speak like that the last time I heard him!'

Coben's writing too, is erratic. At times gripping, but at others extremely cliched and amateurish. Throughout the story, all his main female characters are 'stunningly beautiful' to the point of being boring, leading you to wonder what kind of weird world the story is set in when a waitress, private eye, university professor, housewife and coroner are all such exquisite specimens of womanhood. The only exception is an equally stereotypical pseudo-lesbian (although it's never stated) character about whom the writer continuously repeats the same line about her 'sensible shoes'.

Repetition is something that you notice a lot in this story, perhaps because the narrators don't have a lot of ability to vary their tone. At times it seems the characters use very similar language and phrases whether they're a rich well-to-do father or a young female prostitute.

In all, not bad, but not as good as I'd hoped

Expect a lot of padding

Essentially a good story though one which has appeared in other of his books - dead characters who aren't.. But in this book there is far too much extraneous description of things which do not advance the story one whit. Example: investigator going into the woods to get the information which was so important it could not be given over the phone, she had to be there. But lo, she is stopped by a boorish, over-zealous security man who will not let her in. Why did we have to have description of him, his face, his attitude etc etc? Finally he calls the Sheriff and we then get his description at length ... neither of these characters are relevant, indeed the security man disappears and the Sheriff makes one more appearance as a voice on the other end of the phone. Probably the author thought this would make us all the more eager to learn what was found in the woods.

Disappointing

Story is average. The action music being played in the background whenever something is going to happen is incredibly annoying and distracting. Why do they do that?

Ludlum never fails in keeping you gripped to the bitter end and then you thirst for more. bring on the next book!!!

It felt like I was listening to an abridged recording and to make it worse there was oddly in appropriate music all over the place.

Good story ruined by being abridged

If you're listening to the series book by book then you've no choice other than listen to this abridged version as its the only one available.

This download proves why you should only every listen to unabridged recordings.

The reader/speaker is very good and brilliant with the many voices but the story jumps around too much without the natural flow that you'd get in an unabridged version.

Good story and you'll get through it to be loyal to the series to move on to the next book.

A very linear story-line with, sorry, no surprises and little of the excitement of the Bourne Legacy.

Enjoyable listening

I have read The Camel Club and was interested in this sequel.

It didn't disappoint in any way. The characters are brought to life by the narration, the plot is easy to follow. My only complaint was the ending which was a little far-fetched but if you roll with it, this is an enjoyable listen all the same.

If you are a Baldacci fan then you won't be disappointed

Book 3 & really liking these guys

Nice addition to book 2, though not as intriguing as the previous two books. Will definitely have to keep making my way through the others though.

Mr Patterson I am very disappointed !

James Patterson should be embarrassed to put his name to this book. I am an avid reader of his novels so consider myself a fair critic of his work. this would have to be the worst book I have ever had the misfortune to listen to. The family are too perfect and without giving anything away the storyline is so unbelievable I couldnt believe we were expected to stomach the things an experienced LAPD detective let his family do whilst in witness protection.

I bought the book to read- couldnt get into it so stupidly bought the audiobook- worse mistake. Luckily it was heavily reduced - I now know why. Save your money and ask someone else what happens. Having said that I probably will give the next book a go to see if he is still insulting our intelligence. Listen at your own peril.

Hide and Seek.

What did you like best about this story?

A good storyline that brings you right up to date (it has been a while since listening to the last book) and then gets straight into the plot that threatens the Bennett family. There are some nice twists and turns in the story, some that are predictable, some that make you think to understand what and why but a nicely flowing story that has a beginning, middle and end. I have listened to some books lately where I have wondered if I have fallen asleep at times because the story has jumped hither and thither from beginning to end to middle and back to the start again all within the first two chapters. I really liked the ending of this book because everything fell back into line with and explosive finish and subtle sub stories right to the end.

What does Danny Mastrogiorgio and Henry Leyva bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

These two readers brought the characters to life.

Cotton Candy Listening

I loved listening to this book. It is light and witty and delicious. My dog got a lot of extra walks so that I could keep listening. The reader is wonderful. Don't expect great literature, but for pure fun, you can't go wrong.

Wonderful Listen

I've read the book but decided to listen to the audio version because Kate Reading has a fabulous voice. She really is prefect as Kick Keswick. I wish the rest of this fun series was available on audio.

This is fun escapism solidly anchored in good research of art, jewelry, food wine and travel. Kellogg is a talented writer, and Kick is a witty, urbane, shrewd character whose self-possession, gravitas and cool-headedness are her trademarks. I hope Kellog is not done with the series!

Lots of whimsy and wish I live around the corner from Kick Keswick. Reader is fantastic.

Plot fades until it disappears

I expected this book to be fairly light and to transport me vicariously to Puerta Vallarta, which it did effectively. However, the adventure never made sense and I actually was surprised when the book ended because there was almost no resolution. I never attached to the main characters and found Danny particularly disappointing.

George Guidall isTHE master of narration; each character is brought to life with amazing vocal skill and deft characterisation. There are sufficient plot twists to keep the listener engaged in this police procedural. For me though the sure touch of Guidall is thereasonI chose this; if he reads it, it must be worthwhile!
