    A relaxing murder mystery!
The book is a slow paced, non-high tech murder mystery. The characters are interesting but not terribly complicated. It's a good book to just sit back and read without your mind churning out all sorts of questions. And it's the start of a series of books, which for me is a great thing because I like series the best.
    Good book!
I read this book in one sitting. The book was fast paced, the dialogue was amusing and the characters were interesting. I will go ahead and read the next one in the series!
A mystery with romance and humorâloved it!
One of those books that once you start reading it you don't want to put down. Loved the protagonist, and of course the setting, as well as the truly unique and creative cast of characters. A mystery with romance and humorâloved it!
    Fun read!
Read it in just 2 sittings! Fun to read and kept you guessing as to who the murderer was. On to the next...wedding day dead!
    I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. I thought the relationship the author created between the narrator and the reader was unique. I look forward to the upcoming sequel.

    Could be 4
This could have been a 4.... but I lost my enthusiasm with so very much time spent in the Spanish war time stories. By the end of the book I was glued to the story. The Spanish war should have been book by itself.

    Interesting
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. There is a great diversity of characters in this book. There is lots of LGBTQ+ representation, a variety of races and backgrounds. Thats is nice to see, especially because its not a big deal and everyone carries on with life as normal.
What other book might you compare Her Nightly Embrace to, and why?
This has hints of The Rivers if London by Ben Aaronovitch but with much more focus on the investigation and believing the answer is in our world rather a magical/spiritual/supernatural one.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
It was a bit difficult to distinguish between characters at times. Ramamurthy doesnt differentiate men and womans voices and does his one American accent for 5 different people - and thats about all you get. Its usually clear by context though so wait 5 seconds and youll catch up. Anyone not fully converted to audio might prefer to read a text edition though.
    Any additional comments?
Im still unclear what role the gods serve. Maybe thats the point! But I hope we see more of them in future books.

    Excellent Read
Huge regret - this was the book when Hanne Wihelmsen needed to die.
The character is prickly, rude , self absobed narsasistic bitch, makes her a good cop but pathetic human, with her partner Celia dead , her playing around with the next partner - she has run the course of the series. The entrance of the dog was briliant as it died after a hellish life and l was thrilled to consider the death of Hanne as perfect timing. So for me she died in this book.
Anne Holt you have gone from outstanding to average.

    Brill as usual
I love Chris Carter books both audio and reading self. His imagination is immense and Robert and Garcia characters are so authentic and keep you rooting for them to find the killer. I can't get enough of these books and read over and over. Looking forward to his brand new book too but in meantime off to read Crucifix Killer again.
    Loved it
Got very addicted loved trying to figure out who had done it well worth the read
    Great story with captivating ending
This is only the second book in the Robert Hunter series and I'm hooked, listening to this book instead of sleeping, doing chores or cooking!
Love the narrator too. He seems just right for the book's main characters and neither over- or under- plays the tension in the story.
Just about to start book 3....
    Too gory for me
I was looking for another detective/murder series and found book 1, The Crucifix Killer, bloodthirsty. This book is even harder to get through. It might suit some, but Im too squeamish.
another excellent serial killer story by C. Carter
I first listened to Crucifix Killer and this a great edition to the series. Carter really knows to write on serial killers. ok there was a slight hint of supernatural with the 'visions', but it doesn't take away from the suspense and keeping you guessing. really enjoyed it and now onto his next one

    One awesome read.
Really liked this one. Spoiler alert.
This one stars with Thomas Ironcutter sitting in a folding chair in the parking lot of a titty bar. Its called the Red Lynx. He's there to serve paperwork on a guy who works there. He's set his chair right in the guys parking space. Thomas is a cigar smoker and its always a Cuban cigar. He also carries a flask full of aged scotch. His Uncle Mike is in a car with his shotgun just in case things go sideways. The car is Thomas's 61 jet black Cadillac. A car Thomas rebuilt from top to bottom. A car that was his pride and joy. Thomas was damned good at rebuilding cars, body work and engine repair.
The first person he sees is a young woman who approaches him. Her name is Anna and she's a dancer at the club. It wasn't her first choice of jobs but the money is great and since she's looking for her sister who worked there a few years ago its a great place to see if anyone has news of her. Anna tells Thomas that he's in the parking spot of one big guy. Thomas knows this because that big guy is the person he needs to serve the paperwork on. Robert Turnbull is his name and he's a bouncer at the club. Everyone calls him Bull.
Thomas is not small guy himself. He's 6'3" and over two hundred pounds. Thomas is ex Army and he's also an ex Nashville PD detective and now works as a PI. Thomas was one good detective. His wife committed suicide. A suicide that was later called a murder with Thomas as the prime suspect.Thomas has been waiting for that knock on the door where he will be arrested for murder. He resigned before they could suspend or fire him. His current job was arranged by Sherman Goldman who's a friend and one great attorney. The only one of his kids or grand kids who wanted to follow in his footsteps is his grandson William who's also a great attorney.
Three Harley's entered the parking lot. All three men were bikers. The biggest guy at 6'5" is Turnbull. The man Thomas has to serve the papers on. His boss is Duke, a guy about Thomas's age which is forty four. Duke is the boss. Using his very good talents Thomas serves the papers and has a conversation with Duke. A Duke who isn't your typical biker. A Duke who decides to take Thomas's card. A Duke will become a friend.
Thomas then goes to visit a client. Almose Larking a man who wanted info on his wife. Thomas gives him the info, gets paid and leaves. His next stop is home.
Home is a log cabin with a lot of land. He bought the cabin after his wife's suicide because he couldn't stay in that house. His wife was pregnant when she killed herself. He shares his home with Henry. Henry is an ugly seventy something pound multicolored cur dog.

    Publisher's Summary:
He's just gotten some bad news, and its impact has made him immobile and fearful. He's always known that the racking cough was not just something that was going to go away, that the ache in his chest was indicative of something more serious. And now he's found out that he has a lesion on his lung which could be malignant. He's set to sit and wait and do nothing else until he gets the results, but is swayed into action by a call from an old buddy of his from the service, Harry Burroughs.
Harry has an isolated fishing camp in Northern California. Currently, he has several people in residence. Recent events have convinced him that the place is a powder keg waiting to erupt into violence. Therefore, the call to Nameless. What Nameless finds on his arrival is a simmering situation, mostly caused by the presence of a very erotic woman by the name of Angela who is there with her extremely jealous husband, Ray, who is even more combustible because he's a heavy drinker. Angela is a woman who plays sweet but gets deep underneath a man's skin and is nowhere near as innocent as she would have folks believe.
And then the murders start. The first doesn't seem to have anything to do with the situation when a rug dealer is killed in his van. But then the inhabitants of the camp become targets, including Nameless. He faces more than the usual share of danger as he is entombed in a cave. The book has a little bit of everything - sexual intrigue, theft, murder, violence - all leavened by Nameless searching for the truth in a high tension environment.

    Fun on the Lake
Nameless awaits the results of a cancer test on his lung after a lifetime of smoking. In response to a dire call for help from a GI buddy, an owner of a remote lakeside camp, our hero sets off for the wilderness. The camp guests include a troubled couple,(he a jealous drinker, she a flirtatious bimbo), a young rich boy, a remote artist and a pair of business buddies. The tension builds with the bimbo teasing the male campers and her husband aggressively reacting. Things ratchet up when out of the blue an oriental carpet fence is murdered in a car crash. This is just the scene set for more murders to come, don't miss them.
    Cop Shop
    Another EXCELLENT Pronzini book!
I am now committed to read ALL of Pronzini's books. I love the quirky characteristics of "the nameless detective"! Each story is different and "Blowback" is a most satisfying read. Thank you, Mr. Pronzini!!!
    A Page-Turner
Nameless is called by an old friend running a mountain fishing camp to investigate infidelity that's causing friction between his guests. How does an oriental rug salesman fit in? Solid installment in an outstanding private eye series.
    Kept me involved !
I just couldn't wait to read what was going to happen. Very well written and kept the end well hidden until the last moment of the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Mormon Church may have disavowed the polygamy it became so famous for in the 19th century, but for some Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints, "plural marriage" isn't just ancient history. Mormon bishop's wife Linda Wallheim is stunned to learn her son Kenneth has gotten engaged to a young woman from a polygamous family. Naomi Carter may have left the religion she grew up in, but the Carters will still be the Wallheims' in-laws once Kenneth and Naomi are married.
Stephen Carter, Naomi's father and the patriarch of the Carter clan, invites the Wallheims over to the Carter family compound in the remote foothills of the mountains outside Salt Lake City. Stephen Carter wishes to extend an olive branch to his future in-laws and introduce them to his five wives and 22 children. But Linda suspects he also wants to try to persuade the Wallheims that his way of life is truly righteous. From Linda's point of view, polygamy is an abhorrent practice, one that dehumanizes women and makes children vulnerable to unhealthy family structures. She and her husband, Kurt, arrive at the Carter compound braced for trouble - Linda has her eyes peeled for signs that Stephen's wives and children are unhappy or abused. Although she can't find concrete evidence of mistreatment, Linda's gut instinct tells her that something on the Carter family compound is deeply wrong. She can't quite put her finger on what - until it's too late, and one of the family members is found murdered. Afraid that Stephen Carter's unworldly, sequestered wives and children might suffer at the hands of investigating police, Linda vows to stay at the compound until the murderer is found and the survivors are safe. But even if she manages to do more good than harm with her snooping and interfering, Linda can't unsee what she has seen during her time at the Carters'. Now, confronting the legacy of polygamy in her own Mormon family raises even more questions about her already shaky faith.

The First Two? Great? This One? Fuggedaboutit
    Any additional comments?
    Oh my.
Where to start? The plot? Jumps the shark. From the beginning, it's unbelievable.
The lead character? Now an insufferably self-righteous Nancy Drew. Also deluded, in thinking she can "solve" a murder. (I won't even go near the aplomb with which she faces gruesome murders in the course of a day - but cannot "get over" the death of stillborn infant 20 years before.)
Advice to readers: skip this one, and let's hope the author regains her form.
Recommend listening! (at an slightly increased speed)
I listened to the last two books in the series in a short two days which is unusually fast for me. I enjoy following the personality descriptions as well as the description of the milieu and universe of Linda W. There were a couple decisions made by the main character, Linda, that seemed a bit too reckless to make complete sense, but they were well argued for and added to the suspense perhaps even more than the murder-mystery. Would Linda and her one son really "get away with it" without facing dire consequences for their choices this time? (Not telling. :)) All of Ivie Harrison's books are interesting in that they depict both very good as well as deeply problematic sides of Mormon theology, heritage and life.

    Not as fulfilling
Doyle doesn't secure the 4-5 star book rating on this one. His previous books in the series had the ability to draw you in and keep you enticed to read more. This one leaves the reader lacking that drive to continue to read on.
While I appreciate all the research and valuable historical information Doyle pours into his books, this one was lackluster.
Look forward to reading the next book...

    The secret of the druids
I enjoyed this book. Hopefully I will be reading more from this author this was a interesting book .I loved the info on resonance and light and sound.
    Good Sequel
A really nice blend of mythology and science. The writing picks up in second part of the book! Waiting for the next one.
    Great, but not outstanding!
The title had many twists and turns. What kept me from giving it 5 stars was its lack of a gripping narrative that would have kept me glued to it from cover to cover.

    Great story!
I was a big fan of the author's first novel and was excited to pick this one up. I was not disappointed. The story is short (I guess novellas are supposed to be), but it packed quite a punch. It ended with a cliffhanger that makes me eager to read the follow up. I only hope it is a full length novel this time. I'd love to read as much of Mr. Bell's work as I can!
Great job with the narration as well!
