Another book fantastic!

As the continuation to The Wildings, this book does not disappoint either. Great characters, wonderful moral side lessons, and an utterly lovable heroine, Mara. These books would do well as a film. Great to lose oneself in an animal fantasy. Recommend not just to cat lovers but all animal lovers.

A must read

Being a cat myself, I love cat mysteries. I am not really "in" to fantasy books but I found one here that not only do I love, I did not want it to end. It is a great adventure story on its basic level.

Mara is a Sender, perhaps the greatest Sender ever but she does not venture outside of her Indian home except through her long whiskers which have magical powers. Quite by accident, she is thrust into the world outside where she is lost and alone until she meets and makes friends with other members of her clan.

She soon realizes that her Big Feet (humans) are not the norm. They are loving and kind but the street cats know a different kind of Big Feet, cruel and unthinking and impinging on the neighbourhood where they live and hunt. It becomes apparent that if the clan does not find a new home, they will not survive.

The story is beautiful on so many levels. it is a story of coming of age and facing responsibilities. It is a story of alliances and learning to live amongst others not of your kind. It is about friendship and love and how remarkable things can happen when we work together.

There is humour, there is pathos but at the core, there is a lot of heart. We truly enjoyed reading of Mara's journey. It is a story that can delight all ages and species.

I give it a rousing five purrs and two paws up.

Satisfying Conclusion

I finished this today, feeling I'd truly read a great tale, twined with subtleties, sly humor, deep insights into animal character, and life lessons for anyone to take to heart. I sometimes do feel sad when finishing a great story, and certainly this is the case here with The Hundred Names of Darkness. Whenever I had a spare moment I'd go get it and dive back in, to see where the story had lead everyone. I do miss all the denizens of Nizamuddin, and think of them with the same fondness I do all the cats who've graced my life through the years -- if only I'd had an inkling what they were saying!

Another novel for cat lovers

This book is the sequel to / continues the story begun in The Wildings. I loved it--and all the cat characters--just as much as the first book. Highly recommend.

Excellent

Great story. Loved the characters and the whole book. Too many times people get caught up in the win at all costs syndrome. And a lot of people will do anything to win. In this story, it's not about winning or losing, it's about keeping your mind set on the sport and how you handle the pressure. The author did an excellent job, not only on the story, but on the main characters motivation in her struggle to come to terms with her reasons for running. Love it.

Fantastic

This super interesting book highlighted so many human frailties. The real beauty of the story was about understanding, love and acceptance. The "senior" aspect was extremely impactful and explored the many opportunities that "we older folk" face. A truly delightful reading experience.

Okay read.

Great idea for a story, but it's implementation was a bit lacking. Writing was stilted due to lack of sentence structure variation, although there were a few good descriptive offerings. Many many many typos, especially with regard to quotation punctuation. I did finish the book, though, as I was curious to find out the ending. Good effort at incorporating current events and trends.

Running

Really simple book. Missy is in her sixties and winning marathons and races. Someone is jealous, but Izzy is one stubborn woman. She puts everything on the line just to race the Boston Marathon. Good read!!

I always enjoy the TV dramas 'Vera', which are based on many of this author's novels. This is my first book by her and I am sadly disappointed. It's not very well written. It has an interminable use of repeated strings of "he said, she said, he said". As to the story, we are given background on all of the characters involved. This is needed, but spends too much time on the small details of their lives. It must be acknowledged that issues of race and culture are handled extremely well, but this alone doesn't rescue the story for me. After developing all of the characters. The consequences of the 'deadly rucksack' mentioned in the publisher's note are just depressing. There are no surprises, as such situations are all too familiar. One hour from the end and I am returning it. Fictional accounts of this stuff seem pointless and just feel dispiriting. I'm not sure why I didn't anticipate this before purchasing it.

Full Concentration needed to follow this story..

Come sign the wall...

"The Punks Next Door" was an excellent read. The imagery puts you right in the middle of the parties and shows. You felt the joy that the characters felt as well as the irritation that they experienced. As I read, I had what could only be best described as flashbacks to my own time of misspent youth with phantom taste of stale cigarettes and warm beer and cold coffee. Anarchy Adams created a cast of characters that you have known for years but with different names, faces and circumstances.

I look forward to hearing the audiobook, especially hearing the "Thmoothie Thtand Girl". I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend for anyone looking for an enjoyable read that may want to relive their youth or live a youth that they always wanted of the, lack of better term and probably not correct description, slacker.

This being a new author for me, I wasn't sure if I would like the writing or not. Dear Emma brought tears to my eyes more than once. I would recommend anyone to listen to this book. As I listen to audio books I like an author to bring me right into the life of the characters and this one did just that. I couldn't wait to see who was writing the notes. Where did they come from. Would I select another book written by this author, yes. Would I listen to other books narrated by Mr. Gannett, yes.

A very special book.

The storyline was most absorbing. The narrator had a wonderful ability to make you really believe all would be ok.

Stories of NEW YORK CITY

Snapshots of the life and people in the metropolis spanning a century and a half.

This is a very unusually constructed book, a classic of short story pieces. The oftentimes brief chapters chart the lives of selected New Yorkers from the late 19th Century onwards, short, sharp, sexualised at times, how their lives built and broke the foundations of this sparkling and brooding city.

Robert Mapplethorpe, photographer of people, sharp shooter of bodily forms, a quintessential master of creative in the later 20th century is the style icon to whom the author returns time and again.

A colourful character set in what is an array of stark shots, visualised almost in acute black and white, just like the photos that feature between many of the short chapters. â..a photograph is a window into someone elseâs lifeâ. This eclectic collection of stories and observations is much like a photo burst, capturing a time and holding it in a frame for the reader to peruse, from the present looking to the past.

Patti Smith and Walt Whitman are well profiled, and Robert Moses who shaped much of the skyline in the city was a larger than life man behind some of the great changes ever seen. It is due to his vision â and sadly his ruthlessness with many of the underclass â that we can bathe in the wonder of the city that is larger than life. He was the driver behind the1964/5 Worldâs Fair, yet it closed on a very sour note, and he was the dominant force in the creation of Stuyvesant Town on the East side of Manhattan.

A trip back in time takes the reader to the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side, and explores the lives lived by the Kumpertz family â the soot and squalor are detailed, and measures were imposed so that germs from the lowly classes on one side of town would not infect the richer echelons on the other side.

Overall this is a novel of stories that challenges the reader in its construct, it veers between being insightful and gripping, and mundane â the polar opposites mirror the life in a city. A book that flits around the city and is perfect for the channel hopping generation. At times I truly wondered where the meandering narrative was going, I tired of it on occasion and yetâ. it has really stuck with me and I have this feeling that this will over time become a kind of classic. It is certainly a book that I would recommend to most visitors â but not all because of the scenes of a sexual nature â heading to the city.
