Could not put this book down!

The moment I read the first few pages of Kingston Court, I was hooked! I loved that the book was set in San Diego. Growing up in San Diego, Holly Kammier was able to help me picture my favorite beaches and land marks which was an incredible plus! What grabbed my attention though was Natalie and Samantha and their life. Their daily adult lives were so well written and was so relatable. I felt I knew the Natalie and Samantha and they could easily be my own neighbors.

Their lives take some unexpected turns. Don't worry, no spoilers! Seeing the changes and their struggles were so beautifully written, I could feel their heartbreak and emotional struggles.

So many books I have read lately follow the same formula/pattern. I have found myself just glossing through them and skipping pages just to get to the good part, but Holly Kammier does such a beautiful job creating scenes and making you feel her characters that this was not necessary. I couldn't wait to see how the characters would fare with the changes life threw at them and what choices Natalie and Samantha would make. I was not disappointed and was not tempted to skip through scenes.

I'm sad to see this story come to an end. I wish there was more Natalie and Samantha! Holly Kammier's debut book is a home run!! I can't wait to see more in the future!

Good escape

I can't say enough this book! I haven't read a novel in 10 years but I used to read them all the time. I got it Tuesday and decided to read a couple paragraphs while sitting down the watch the debates which I was pumped to watch. I found myself totally enraptured by the book and ended up missing the debates entirely staying up way past my bedtime because I couldn't put it down! It's about girlfriends, motherhood, life, and basically love (with just the right amount of lust thrown in to make it juicy). I finished it Wednesday and I can't stop thinking about it. If you want to get lost in a really good love story, I highly recommend this book.

Thoughtful, honest, smart novel you won't want to put down until the end.

Kingston Court is a clever, well-written novel that forces you to keep turning the page to see what will happen to the two main characters. The novel thrusts you into the lives of two women living in a San Diego neighborhood.

The not so impartial "rule of law" in the UK and its devasting impact on a mother and son

Let me start by saying I am a lawyer, but a corporate lawyer rather than one with any experience in family law. The eloquent and gripping account set forth in this novel was a true eye opener for me, in reading about how a judge may decide on a child's fate merely on the "balance of probabilities" rather than an evidence based trial beyond reasonable doubt. I have recommended this book to both friends and legal colleagues, for its beautifully written portrayal of a mother's anguish struggling for years in a hostile legal labyrinth. Highly affecting, but vitally, also very thought provoking.

Tragedy

Reading this book was painful. The happy times did little to mask what you knew was to come. But I could not put it aside. Love lost is one thing, but love never given is a tragedy.

Told in a truly unique manner.

A Disappointing Book

This book was supposed to be one of the top 100 mystery books, but it really disappointed. There was no plot, or action; just people a girl describing her life with her mother, and onlookers describing the pair. You never really find out what happened to cause the pair to their odd style of life. I would not recommend this book!

Quick read

Read this book quickly, within a few hours. Interesting, twist to the end. A little jarring with the untied ends, but main plot line was complete.

Unbelievable!

Escape. Magden takes you into the mind of this mentally ill mother and her precious daughter like no other writer could. I was right there emotionally with both of these characters. This book was very intense in a good way.

The Mind of a Sociopath

Although the story unfolds painfully slow, the glimpse into the minds of the sociopath mother and daughter team is fascinating and chilling. The author, however, leaves too much to assumption because the mother's childhood remains unexplained.

Excellent listening experience

I really wasn't expecting much from this - it's a book club choice for me, so not something I'd ordinarily read but I was really impressed!

Even though the writer reads it - which can ruin a book - the tone and pace is just right. No false 'voice' attempts, just a deep sensitive intonation that adds to the impact.

The story follows Miles Heller at first but soon gives the perspectives of the three people he lives with in New York and then his father and mother. The quality of depth of feeling and understanding of people is brilliant. The people feel real - these aren't simplistic one dimensional caricatures but carefully drawn humans.

The ending - perhaps the thing that goes wrong in books most often? Is slightly difficult but works I think.

Really worth a credit - although you'll devour it quickly!!

Enthralling.

Auster weaves a story which is at once heart breakingly honest and uplifting. His precise yet utterly unpretentious writing style takes you deeper into the complex souls of his characters. It feels like pure improvisation, yet every sentence is effortlessly tipped forwards into the journey by every perfectly chosen word.

The only reason I give the story four out of five is because like most of Auster's work the journey is so well described the destination doesn't quite measure up, but that is because he sets the bar is so high.

Sombre tale of our times

I have read other Paul Auster novels but this is the first time I have listened to one and read by the author. Having Auster read is a privilege, let's face it he did enough writing it. His rather grey and. bleak voice wouldn't suit every book, not even others he has written, but it was an authentic voice for this novel. which grey and bleak as it often is is ultimately an optimistic portrait of human affections in a world that only seems to care when its prescribed morality is under threat no matter how hypocritical that morality might be.

Not for me.

What would have made Sunset Park better?

This book is the first audible book I have failed to finish. The story was dire , disconnected and bleak

Very sweet, nice premise, good read!

I ordered this book on Amazon, slightly wary because of all the reviews that deemed it confusing or a waste of time. However, once I began reading, it was so hard to put down! I found myself really rooting for the underdog, and really hoping for the outcome I wanted, all the while imagining what I would have done in each of the characters' positions. It was definitely a fun read and I would absolutely recommend it!

The only two things that bothered me: the first is that there were quite a few names to keep straight, I will admit. About halfway through the book there were still people who I wasn't sure I actually knew who they were, but the main characters are really the ones that kept me reading and all the names didn't really make much of a difference. Second, if you're not British, a lot of the slang will probably be lost on you. Many many times I didn't have a clue what they were talking about, but used my best judgement and mostly skipped over it and hoped it wasn't important (in the end, it wasn't really).

So, with those things in mind, if you're still interested, I can assure you that you will love it, just as I did!

Three interconnecting stories

The couples alternate stories in this book. Natalie and Tom-best friends on a 26-letter adventure. Lucy and Patrick (Tom's brother) - dealing with infidelity. And Anna and Nicholas (Nat' s parents)-dealing with getting older. Nat was a bit immature for her age Ithought. And Lucy was hard to like. So it took me a while to get into it but I liked it towards the end. The story came together nicely.

Very clever and funny.

Once again Elizabeth Noble has done a great job. I knew what the end would be but wouldn't think about not reading the entire story. Her creativeness with the alphabet was very clever. I had to look up the definition of the letter A.

Five stars

I enjoy all her books, good to read.

Happy Reader

I found this book to be a fun read. If you're looking for a serious book with lots of issues to discuss then you're barking up the wrong tree. But if you just want a fun summer read then this one's for you. The best part about this book was how quickly it was delivered...which gave me plenty of time to read it for my book club meeting.

A good performance of an excellent story

I've loved the Jungle Doctor series since childhood, and Crooked Dealings is one of my favorites: a good story that keeps the listener interested throughout, with a tremendously happy ending. This series is taken from the real experiences of Paul White, an Australian missionary doctor in Tanzania, years ago when the country was still called Tanganyika. The Gospel is woven in and clearly presented, as it is in all the Jungle Doctor adventures that I've read. I'm glad to see that several others of the series are also available for Audible, and I hope they will continue producing these delightful books in this audio format.

The reader does quite well, imitating different accents for the different characters; and while his Australian accent doesn't sound 100% authentic, it is good enough not to detract from the story and with a little imagination, I can picture the faces of the people who are speaking. Overall, the reader's skills help to bring the story to life.

Small boy and his dog.

In the days before Christmas the characters of the Hospital and the villages around weave a story of twisted things made straight. Mostly it's Goha's story, the boy who wants his crooked face and back made straight, but there is much to happen before his wish can be compleated. Those who read the classic book as children will notice one or two changes to the story, but I found it no problem. Michael's reading is very good with the characters given their own distinctive voice. Much enjoyed with the children.

Such a fun, sweet book! Love it!

HA! I just finished reading Adena Halpern's latest novel, Pinch Me. What a fun book to start the year off. I loved her characters and could hear Dolly and Selma as if they were actually real people. I do see how some people could not believe that they were not sisters, but think about it. They were all each other had for years so they did lose the "mother / daughter" relationship and became more like sisters. I thought they were very believable and wanted them as my neighbors. They would be hysterical to live by!

Lily's relationship with Gogo was great. Although I couldn't stand his nickname, Gogo was a great character. I loved the chapter when she went on about his flaws. Seriously, funny.

I thought this was a very funny premise and something that I have thought about it as well: waking up one day to find that all you had before was a dream. Great concept and great execution!

I thought Ms. Halpern did a great job telling us the story and making it believable enough to keep reading it. In fact, I wasn't quite sure I wanted it to end yet! I love her writing style and would have read quite a bit more. So keep writing Adena! More books! Faster!!

Such a fun, sweet, quick (too quick!) read. I am very glad I bought this for the kindle. Love it!

Hard to read; implausible plot

The writing in this book is so clunky it's hard to read. The characters are always "screaming" and "shouting". And the plot is completely implausible. I wanted to know how it ended, but I couldn't wait for the book to end at the same time. And I have to say that Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream does NOT contain raw eggs. So that "fact" as a clue to fix the heroine's problem is completely wrong. Where were the editors and fact checkers??

Fast Read-and Great

Kept me reading at a fast pace. Funny and engrossing. Of course, if you read the blurb, you know this is just a bit paranormal-but not in a monstery or vampire way, or even in a ghost way. It's just... well, read it and find out what happens when Lily says, "Pinch me!"

Loved this book.

I really like all of the books by Adena Halpern, so it was no surprise that I liked this one too. It'sa somewhat predictable ending, but very funny along the way. It is a perfect summer beach read. I recommend it for when you want to be entertained!

Adena did it again!

I wanted to give this book 4.5 stars but will go with 5 over 4. I just love Adena Halpern's writing style and this book, like "29" and "The Ten Best Days of My Life" had me laughing and crying all at once, although I think it was my least favorite of the three. But since I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the other two and LOVED, LOVED this one, it's all good.

Most awful narrator ever

Story was ok. A bit trite and sentimental.

Reader was dreadful - irritating voices for characters.

Moving and sensitive story

Two very different worlds and two very different stories that smelt into one, EXQUISITELY done in my view!

The only thing I wanted was to read on. I found it a gripping story, and I became part of both worlds.

It is a beautiful and moving story of a little Jewish girl during the second world war, and an American journalist in Paris in 2002. I was intrigued by the fact that the life of the girl was so linked with the life of the inlaws of the journalist.

The fact that the narrator changed voices according to which person was talking, sounded a bit odd in my ears, however, this didn't at all change my opinion about the book.

Well........it was a great read! The story stayed with me for days after it had ended.

The narration/performance. Truly the worst I've heard on audible. The French people were portrayed in a voice that was a stuffed, upper class English unbearable to listen to. Gave up in the end and continued to read on Kindle.

A compelling story

I found this story captivating. It was skilfully written painting vivid pictures of the characters and events that unfold. Hannah Richell writes with great insight into the complexities of family relationships. If only more families had the maturity and sense to, in time work through the aftermath of their mistakes, loss and grief.

I eagerly await her next novel The Shadow Year due to be published this year 2013. I hope Audible will add this one soon!

A brilliant story!!!

A highly emotional story about a family who suffers tragedy. Well written as we are taken along with each of the family members - flipping from present time, back to the past. A couple of times i found i just wanted to flip back to see what had happened in the past when it had gone back to the present time - but i contained my suspense and kept things going in order of the book. I have found this week whilst reading the book i have been holding on to my children a bit longer than usual........

Interesting story.

Where does Secrets of the Tides rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed this book. It had a lovely way of weaving the reactions of the characters to the single main event. It is a very human story, with a few twists and turns. I enjoyed the reading voice as well. Well worth a listen.

Simply brilliant

This book was a real treat and I didn't want it to end. I could picture all of the characters, the setting and the events perfectly. I would highly recommend this book. Very gripping!

An emotional journey

An intense story describing difficult times and their fallout that hopefully not many will feel, beautifully read and presented by Emelia Fox. The book captures and describes situations, places and emotions clearly and in a way that makes it easy for the listener to feel part of.
