    Boring and slow moving
The narrator delivers little passion and commitment to different character voices. The story is very slow and boring with little to entertain the audience. I literally fell asleep listeing to it. Save your money.

    Absolute pleasure
What an odd and delightful mind Iris Murdoch had. Her intelligent writing, beautifully descriptive prose and colourful imagination make her stories unique, and read by Miriam Margoyles this was pure joy. I agree with the previous reviewer, if Miriam had narrated all of Murdoch's books, I would download them all. I pitied poor Dora in the possession of such an appalling husband......but presented at a time when women had fewer choices she tries her best to rebel.
    This is a pleasure!
Margolyse should read every Murdoch novel - her voice catches the comedy and the cleverness: note perfect.
My first Iris Murdoch, am now a huge fan
What did you like best about this story?
The amazing descriptive language. It's all it's quite beautiful.
What does Miriam Margoyles bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Miriam Margolyes makes this story for me. The range of different voices and characterations she brings to the narration is amazing. I just love her.
    Any additional comments?
This book reflects the attitudes of the time, however, the opening chapters which describe married life for a young woman, are so well written and structured it struck such a chord.
    Engrossing intelligent book
Really captivated by this book which is both serious and hilarious about the human condition. Miriam Margoles takes on the voices of men and women with ease and made it very easy to conjure up each person. Loved the character of Dora, an anti-heroine who so easily loses the plot she can go to a station to reclaim a lost suitcase and leave it in the pub on the way home. Very funny and tense as the members of an alternative community stumble into each other with unanticipated results. Very sad and fiercely drawn portrait of the homosexual leader tortured by his religious beliefs of sin.A book both humorous and compassionate and wise. Unputdownable.
    Vanity betrayal and live
The Bell is about many things, including the vanity of religiosity, betrayal, and love.
The story has engaging characters and story well narrated by Miriam M

    loved the series
I did like this series of books. I have to say the female lead in this third book was the most irritating. I had a hard time liking her, wanted to shake her and tell her to quit throwing stupid tantrums and grow up! Did not ruin the story for me, I liked the rest of the characters and how everything wrapped up in this. Just wish she hadn't been so juvenile. Still a good listen, like this author and narrator.

    I hoped , oh how I hoped
The best part about this book is Ma. I thought the pace was slow although It began briskly, it slowed to a crawl . I got the chop-shop part when the heroine's car was stolen. I had a hard time staying with this book. The rivalry over lunch where were the meals I couldn't forget. I felt more for the cook and all he did was grunt.
    Handbook for Yankees
Ad Hudler must be related to Fanny Flag. Very entertaining and true. If you anticipate going to live in the south, read this first.
    southern girl
bought this book for the title alone..i swear......and couldnt help laughing out loud at some parts....and enjoying every second of reading it. def a worth buying book
Mildly entertaining - but only if you've lived in Macon, GA
I read somewhere that this is Ad Hudler's love letter to Macon, Ga - where he lived for a few years and the setting of this book. Well, if this is his love letter, I sure wouldn't want to get any hate mail from him. I lived there too and he gets the racism and materialism of the upper class pretty well. He also gets the xenophobia down pretty well, except he seems to think Yankees are only from New Jersey (I thought they were from Vermont because here in Boston we think New Jersey is the deep south!). I kept reading because I could recognize the places and some of the people. If I hadn't been able to do that, I doubt I would have read it all the way through.
Had potential but Christ bashing was over the top
I was excited when I found this book as I had lived in the South as a Yankee transplant. I LOVE to read tales of small towns, quirky characters and southern communities. The book got off to a charming start but by the end of Chapter 5 I was finished (I DO hate not finishing a book!). The writer's obvious chip on his shoulder/liberal slant was a turnoff and the Christ bashing went too far (I tried to see where it would/could/might be funny but it just fell flat and wasn't remotely funny). I think Hudler could have written this story line more artfully and subtly without being so in-your-face. At first I thought I was just being sensitive but see that others share my views..... Also, the author's elitist voice came through in his writing. It was distracting and muddled an otherwise promising story. His snide tale about the man from Marion, Indiana tells me Mr. Hudler thinks little of midwesterners, too.
If you enjoy small town tales, check out Garden of Eden by Eve Adams (pseudonym). Now THAT is the charming tale I hoped Southern Living would be.

    Wrong reader
June Barrie reads this unabridged version of the book and is an excellent reader, a thoroughly enjoyable listen. I don't know how the mistake came about but this book is well worth a listen.
nice read from a great author
never lets me down, whimsical and interesting .
    Miss Read strikes again
What a brilliant first introduction to a lovely new village with a great number of interesting characters all with stories to tell
    Order Please!!!
Love these books but I do wish some order was given!! I am going backwards and forwards with each title as they aren't ordered in any fashion
    A Great Escape
A shame only the abridged book was available, but I still enjoyed the wonderful escape that Miss Read always gives her readers. Having read the book before I did not find the way it had been abridged too noticeable. I gave it 4 stars only because I would have preferred the full story. I was a lovely book well narrated.

Satire at Its Very, Very Best
Praise the Lord for this novel, and pass Preston L. Allen his richly deserved Pulitzer! Hallelujah! And a great Amen! I have been saved for the weariness of unfunniness in a novel! This has been a side-splitting experience thanks to the brilliance of young church pianist/organist Elwyn and the flock at the Church of Our Blessed Redeemer Who Walked Upon the Waters--and to think it is right over the causeway from me here in Miami Beach, for the novel is set in Miami.
Where to begin to tell potential readers just how wonderful this novel is. Let me start this way. I teach writing, part time, at a local college. And when I was telling one of my students about the novel--she works at a large book store--she said, "Oh, yes, I was trying to figure out where to put it in the religion section!" I responded, "Haven't you heard that you can't judge a book by its cover?" Yes, yes, the cover! It almost looks as though you'd find it in the drawer of the nightstand in whatever cheap motel you have chosen to stay in with Gideon imprinted upon. Perfect for this brilliant piece of satire.
Elwyn, who has taught himself to play the piano, is out to save everyone including classmates such as John Feinstein and a collection of others who quite clearly do not like him. And the best place to do it, of course, would be in trigonometry class. That is just one of a zillion fun pieces in this novel. Elwyn has his sights set on going to Bible College. But he has to deal with his own sets of lusts. Yes, for Peachie who... Well, I won't tell, but it seems Peachie has sinned a little and with Barry who is already in Bible College. And then there's the lust he feels for the new widow in church, Sister Morrisohn, the one who is a few times older than Elwyn. She, on the other hand, was forty years younger than Brother Morrisohn who supplied the money to build and sustain the church. His funeral is a hoot!
Preston L. Allen knows his Bible. And he knows how to toss quotations in, page after page of zingers. We live in a country filled with hypocritical evangelicals. And this is a novel that takes it just one more step over the edge. Be prepared to laugh aloud a lot, at least on average once for every page.
    GREAT READ!
This book CHANGED MY WORLD! I am not religious, and I loved it! It's not "about" religion so no worries!
    Stayed up all night reading
I really loved this book. Mr. Allen does a wonderful job developing his characters personalities so that you feel like you know them. I couldn't wait ti find out what happened next, so I stayed up into the wee hours reading. Get this book! You will be happy you did.
One of the ten everyone should read this year
I just learned that Oprah's Magazine listed Preston Allen's book, "Jesus Boy" one of the ten books to read this year.

    a moving, emotional story (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
some parts of the book are excellent.
parts of this novel were excellent, as in the descriptions of travel sites. I know it is a novel but I found the requests of the deceased mother to hold too many expectations. Plus, the implication to the child was that somehow the mother was "still here." As a theologian I find her requests to the child to build false hopes. I wonder if the author was trying to work through some grief process of her own. Our book club reviewed this book and gave it mixed reviews. THe one who chose the book just lost her father in death so it appealed to her.
Sweet book about loss, love and life
This is a sweet book which portrays the relationship between a Dad and daughter after the loss of their wife and mother. You travel with them on a journey through many countries but also on a journey of life, as they find their way to a new life together. The idea that you are just a small part of the universe, where so much suffering exists right along so much joy really positions our existance and helps identify that it's a much bigger world out there than we sometimes focus on. I enjoyed this book, but could have done without the father's Aussie accent, which distracts.
Every book by John Shors is wonderful. I thought this was his best
Every book by John Shors is wonderful. I thought this was his best. The end was predictable , but it was still a wonderful book.
    Slow Read
This was my least liked book by Shors. I adored his others but was quite disappointed with this one. It dragged on and so often he used the same words to describe how much the Dad and his daughter missed the wife and Mom who had died.
it was not enough to carry me through the plain old sad, and
I did not finish this book, which is unusual for me. Although I found the description of the various places visited by the characters interesting, it was not enough to carry me through the plain old sad, and, frankly, sappy story line.

When the pastor of her close-knit church announces his plans to move the entire congregation to another state, Miranda jumps at the opportunity to dissolve ties with Mason Chandler and his controlling method of ruling his flock. Quickly charmed by Miranda's children, Jack brings some much-needed life into the sheltered household. But his constant challenging of the family's conservative lifestyle makes the recovering mother uneasy and defensive - despite Jack's unnerving appeal.
As Jack tries to make sense of the mysterious Miranda and the secrets she holds so tightly, Mason's pressure on her increases. With her emotions stirring and freedom calling, can Miranda find a way to unshackle her family without losing everything?
    Members Reviews:
clean, christian, fairly well written, held interest
Story is about a widowed mother of 6, Miranda, living under a controlling pastor, Mason, who runs a cult-like church. She is in fear for herself and her children. There is a slight mystery as to all that she is afraid of giving the story a tiny bit of suspense. She endures a terrible accident leaving her disabled and unable to care for her young children. She appoints her brother-in-law, Jack, a college professor as guardian. He was previously rejected by her husband and they have been out of touch for many years.
I read most of the other reviews and thought some of the negative ones were amusing. Yes, this is a story including many references to homeschooling, but no, it's not a critique of homeschooling, that did not seem to be the purpose of the story. Yes, there may be some moral interferences drawn from the story, but primarily, to me, it seemed a story of a woman who has endured much and is trying to keep herself and her family sane and together and protect her 6 beautiful children. It is her journey out of the restrictive control of the men in her life. It is also, very much, the journey of Jack, a well-drawn and fairly complex character. It is also, to a lesser extent, the story of the children themselves. The characters were reasonably well written, Miranda' s especially to my mind. Her strength of character as she battles is remarkable. There is a romance but it seems slightly downplayed and VERY clean.
This is a clean story but there are elements that might, by some be considered for a more mature audience. I did think one reviewers comment about Jack's drinking and supposed "swearing" highly amusing. Jack isn't a prude but he is a normal man and, for the most part, his character has a great deal of love and integrity. While I personally would not bring booze into an abstaining household, it is not a sin for him to consume it himself. Their comments about his medication issue I would agree with, but it IS obvious he was trying to help, not hurt.

A heartbreaking poignant exhilarating trip of a read
" the help" led me to find other stories about the tumultuous and tender stories of the relationships between the colored and white people of the sixties. I found a jewel, that crushed my heart, then gave me new hope for humanity. I highly happily and completely recommend this book.
    Good story but seemed rushed
The storyline I really enjoyed but I felt like so much of it was skipped over or summarized. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it were told in more detail.

    Gripping stuff, well written
I thought this was a great book, well written, with a nice eye for characterisation and detail. If you like Jo Nesbo and the other Scandanavian writers, you'll like this one. Not as ponderous and s-l-o-w as Stieg Larsson.
    Good reader, too.
    Slow storyline
The storyline of this book was rather slow to develop. And I didn't like the English regional accents attributed to the Swedish characters.
    Unexciting, uneventful and dull
This was the most disappointing audiobook I have ever chosen from audible. I am a big fan of Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson etc and was hoping that this would be an exciting listen. Nesbo and Larsson are in another league to this. The slowest, least exciting, least eventful book. At times it felt like a children's novel. I felt as though the majority of the book dealt with the inspectors dining habits, with only vague detail given to the murder plot which was incredible simple, painfully slow to get going, and extremely thin on the ground. There was not one moment of tension or excitement, and i found myself incredibly irritated by both the narrator and the charactors. After 4 hours i was waiting for it to end.
