    Publisher's Summary:
Paris, the storybook capital of romance - of strolls down cobblestone streets and kisses by the Seine - may not be the ideal location to mend a wounded heart. But pragmatic professional writer Anna, who has been unlucky in love in L.A., has come here with keys to her aunt's empty apartment. Bilingual and blessed with dual citizenship, she seeks solace in the delectable pastries, in the company of old friends, and in her exciting new job: translating a mysterious, erotic French novel by an anonymous author.
Intrigued by the story, and drawn in by the mystery behind the book, Anna soon finds herself among the city's literati - and in the arms of an alluring Parisian - as she resolves to explore who she is... in both cultures.

    Francophile
I loved the perspective from the main character Anna being the product of a French father and an American mother. It was interesting to me when she analyzed her thought process using the two languages and two cultures. I enjoyed her reflections on language and culture, slang, customs, idioms, etc. What I didn't enjoy was the storyline! It was just 'ok.' I didn't enjoy the translated book selections.....not my type of reading. And in the end, I wondered what the point of the book was. I would recommend this book to those who would enjoy the comparison of the languages with a warning against the storyline. Maybe I just didn't get it?
    Lots of French
I didn't like the book at first. The graphic scenes are not my taster all. But the story progressed well except for too many French lines that didn't get defined. They could have easily been at the bottom of the page. But the ending was so extraordinary that I think this author has amazing potential.
Read this literary trip to Paris carefully for full enjoyment
As at least one other reader has pointed out, this is a layered novel. It is also like trip to Paris. In fact, I downloaded this to my Kindle just after returning from a week in Paris, hoping to recapture some of my favorite city's atmosphere. I was not disappointed.
This is a story about illusions. Read it carefully and note the details. The author creates literary intrigue in such a way that the book has much in common with a good suspense novel. Her characters are believable and well crafted. The entire story is so well told that I was halfway through before I realized it was fiction. Really.
But do watch those details, because they will help you unravel the story on your own. There is a bit of a twist at the end that becomes evident several pages before the final page. Yet you are not quite sure...
If you love Paris, read this. If you love words and nuances, read this. If you speak enough French to be dangerous, read this and learn more.
Best book I've read in 2012.
about a translator, ok, nothing great - reader better know some french
this is acually a bit boring - lots of passages in french and not all are translated for the reader, so your highschool french
and beyond is helpful! - some passages are racy so don't give to kids!
    awesome book
Got the book & gulped it down! Read it in 2 days. Loved it! Would recommend to anyone! Buy it!

Don't be deceived by the title!
This is not a sloppy love story. It's about truth, lies, misunderstandings and fate. It is upsetting at times but very well written with believable characters and narration.

    couldn't put it down!
I do enjoy Colin Bateman's story telling and this one does not disappoint! Dan Starkey is a bit of a plonker, but you can't help liking him and wanting him to come through smiling, and at times I was on the edge of my train seat cheering him on (no idea what the other passengers thought!). I have a number of books in my audible library which I dip in and out of, but this one I just couldn't wait to listen to and was a little sad when it finished! So much so, I found the longest Colin Bateman book I could find and downloaded it the very next day!
I love Colin Bateman's dark humour, great book
Colin Bateman can't go wrong, especially when narrated by Adam Moore. Great story and engaging narration.
    Irish Trainspotting
All the thrills with none of the scotland and some higher stakes. A lot of fun to listen to, would benefit from A cast reading.
    Very Funny, Totally Belfast !!!
Very Funny a true reflection of Belfast. Witting Laugh out Loud stuff. A great listen!
    Great listen
Actually found Dan slightly less irritating in this one and was more amused by him as a consequence. good listen. .

    Pueblo chico infierno grande

    Does RST justice
I have read this twice, one of my favourite books, so I was a little reluctant to listen, especially since it is abridged.
But it is, quite simply, brilliant. Jack Davenport is obviously a fan and brings the story to life in such an intimate, easy way I fell in love with the story, all over again. I think it is better to read it first, so you get the full visual intricacies of the text, and, once you are a fan, and you start to wish you could read it again, listen to this. You won't be disappointed. Apparently Steven Hall is almost finished his next book, but until then, this is a good fix.

    Publisher's Summary:
A novel about connections in a changing world of friends, lovers, family, illness, and death, this unique narrative tells the story of Marie King - a 59-year-old divorcée from Sydneys affluent north shore. Having devoted her rather conventional life to looking after her husband and three children, Marie is experiencing an identity crisis. Forced to sell the family home now that her children have moved out, Marie expresses herself by getting a tattoo and, consequently, forges a friendship with tattoo artist Rhys. As Rhys introduces Marie to an alternative side of Sydney, friction erupts between Maries social spheres - the affluent middle class and the tattoo subculture. A multi-layered examination of how we live now, this account positions one family as a microcosm for the modifications operating in society at large.

Sooooo Sydney, am I glad I do not live in Mosman or surrounding burbs.
It is not surprising this book was a good Book Club book I am sure all the events revealed in this book would have caused great discussion.
Not for me though, the characters were too shallow and predictable for my taste, didn't like any of them very much. For me to like a book I have must have at least one person to like a little.
    Nearly chic lit.
    Australian author
I have read this book twice, firstly it is australian and set in Sydney in the area i grew up in,but i read american books all the time that have street/suburb city names that i dont know so dont let that put you off.
I think this book is perfect for women, over 50,the kids are grown up and she is doing things for herself.
I love the writing, the aussieness and the tattoos, maybe not for everyone.
    Breaking out
A good read. Marie, an older divorced Australian, breaks loose from her stifling, conservative life in Mossman, an exclusive suburb of Sydney, by getting tattooed. The story takes us into the world of the tattoo artist ,and Marie'sattempt to claim her life and her own body. This, I think is a first novel by Fiona Mcgregor. It is a memorable story that can shake our subconscious prejudices and beliefs.
    Indelible Ink - Boring
It is very seldom that I cannot finish a novel once started, but this one I could not persevere with. I found the characters hard to like, the storyline mundane, All in all, not my cup of tea.
    Honest
For a while I wondered where the story was leading, but thoroughly enjoyed following gutsy lady Marie through her final months. Very poignant and honest.

Murder in Tel Aviv: A superb novel digs for roots in Israel's modern history
As an American Jew and both secular and far more progressive than the self-appointed leadership of the U.S. Jewish community, I've often wondered how the current intractable standoff between Israelis and Palestinians came about. "It's obvious, you'll say. "Jewish immigrants from Europe settled on Palestinian land," and of course that's true. But doesn't it seem unlikely that every Israeli became an Arab-hater shortly after arriving, and every Arab a Jew-hater just as quickly? Weren't there those on both sides who opposed the fighting and worked for reconciliation through the years of Israel's "pre-history" (before 1948) and in the decades since? Surely, the latter-day Peace Now movement had its precursors in an earlier time.
The Debba, though framed as a murder mystery (and an excellent one at that), is a serious fictional inquiry into this question. In the view of its author, Avner Mandelman, it's also an examination of "necessary evil," the maniuplations and assassinations and kidnappings that governments carry out in the name of national security. Mandelman, a short-story writer who divides his time among Canada, California, and Paris, was born in Israel and served in the Israeli Air Force in the 1967 Six Days' War that established the boundaries within which Israel allegedly lives today. He is well qualified to explore both questions.
Mandelman's protagonist, David Starkman, a naturalized Canadian citizen, was a trained killer for the Israeli armed forces who carried out black missions in Arab capitals in the 1960s. When he learns of his father's murder in Tel Aviv, Starkman is suddenly pulled back into the ethically murky environment he had fled seven years earlier.
The time is 1977, and the right-wing Likkud Party is given an even chance of overturning the Labour Government that has held office in Israel ever since Independence. Starkman's father, Isser, a celebrated hero in Israel's War of Independence, has been knifed to death and his body mutilated in the manner employed by Arab fighters. Starkman teams up with the police investigation but carries out his own independent inquiry through friends and family, encountering violent opposition along the way. Meanwhile, when his father's will is read, Starkman learns that the old man is leaving his apartment and his savings to David only on condition that within 45 days he produce a play Isser wrote much earlier in life.
This play, The Debba, gives the novel its title and illuminates the early history of Jewish-Arab relations in Palestine.

    A modern classic
    Any additional comments?
When I read my first Sebastien Faulks novel many moons ago, I remember waiting for a big event to happen or an incredibly unforeseen ending to occur and I felt mildly disappointed that this was not the case.
The beauty of a Faulks novel is that although there might not be an aforementioned 'surprise' in each chapter, his beautifully articulate use of English literature never fails to transport you to what you are reading.
In this book; during Each sentence, you will find yourself gently walking down the fictional path of post war Paris as a young lady starting a job at the Hotel De Lion' Dor. It is not suspenseful or action packed, but rather intriguing and lovely, undoubtedly a welcome change of pace from real life for me and many others I'm sure.
'Not Faulks' Best' is the title of many reviews on this book, but do not be fooled. In my opinion, It is as beautiful and magnificent as any of his previous novels.
    A very decent listen
Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl at the Lion D'Or to be better than the print version?
I have only tried to read Birdsong in the past a couple of times and not finished it. I thought I might struggle with Mr Foulkes as I didn't get on with Birdsong but I was impressed with the story-telling and the way the life of the main character was plucked out of a sea of milling lives in the city and given a spotlight. The characterisation was excellent and the story compelling.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Girl at the Lion D'Or?
The girl's impassioned plea not to be left by her lover. But this was memorable because it was the one point in the book where I felt that the author slightly lost control of the characterisation and may have suffered from being a man trying to understand the workings of a woman's mind.
What does James Wilby bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
I found his narration pleasantly neutral.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
After the first couple of hours possibly yes.
    Evocative descriptions
We enjoyed the book. It was not gripping or exciting but that suited us for evening listening. Faulks drew us into his tale of post war deprivation and abandonment some people must have suffered. Beautiful descriptions of French countryside and life. The story flowed smoothly with skilful narration by James Wilby. We will hopefully find more read by him.
    Didn't strike a chord
I had high hopes for this book but found it predictable. At the end of it, I wondered why I'd spent so many hours listening to something that had no suspense and no surprises. Little plot strands that felt as if they *might* go somewhere just petered out and it was really nothing more than the very traditional married man/younger woman scenario.
