    Surprising find
I have never read a Di Morrisey book before and wasn't sue how I would find her as an author.
The main character hooked me in quickly and I became annoyed when the story shifted backwards to the 1930's to be about her grandmother. The chapters are long and I kept wondering how long I was going to have to wait.
The second time the story jumped backwards in time the story was more interesting and I started to enjoy the shift.
I was surprised that I found myself wondering what was going to happen next through the use of good storytelling.
Di Morressey doesn't utilize any shock techniques or outrageous situations, just a good genuine tale that keeps you interested.
I have since purchased 2 further Di Morressey audiobooks based on the strength of this book and Di Morressey has become my favorite adult author.
    A journey
Loved it. It took you into the minds and what it was like as a pow in world war 2

But Mimi has just arrived, so who is responsible? And more alarmingly, what does the intruder want?

Not what I expected...but good nonetheless.
I bought this book on a whim. I was completely unfamiliar with the author. I wanted something different and unknown to me. I was familiar with the narrator and I did a search under her name since she is one of my favorites. I was drawn to this book because of the cover and the title. It sounded interesting so I downloaded it.
The prologue is a little confusing. In fact, I had to go back after I finished the book and listened to it again, and while it made more sense, it still seemed a little pointless.
Once you get past the prologue though, this book really takes on a nice personality. The characters are wonderful. The narration is excellent, and there is a nice little unexpected twist in the middle and another at the end.
This is not a paranormal book (though the title made me think that at first) nor is it romance. There is plenty of plot though. I recommend the read.

When her bullying husband dies, Ettas selfish, ambitious children drag her from her lovely Dorset house to live in a hideous modern bungalow in the Cotswold village of Willowwood and to act as an unpaid Nanny to their children.
Her neighbour, powerful tycoon and ex-footballer Valent Edwards, has bought the big house next door. One night Etta finds a horribly mutilated filly in the snow in Valents woods and persuades the outraged Valent to take her in. Miraculously she pulls through and, by now called Mrs Wilkinson, captivates everyone in the village. DNA Tests reveal her to be a spectacularly well-bred racehorse.
After a nail-biting court case, Mrs Wilkinson is awarded to Etta, thus ensuring the lasting and vengeful enmity of her evil former trainer and owner. Etta forms a village syndicate to put the filly into training. The syndicate is a riotous mix of village characters, which set off to the races in a minibus clanking with bottles. From wild parties at Newbury and Ludlow, to an overnight of musical beds at Stratford, to the thrills and spills of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, one fling leads to another and another. Mrs Wilkinson become a star nicknamed the Peoples Pony, she is beloved by the crowds as she progresses from point-to-points to the major meetings and brings fame and fortune to the syndicate. Can she be the first mare in thirty years, and Amber the first woman ever, to conquer this mighty race? Avoid the abridged
A great feel good story that loses the detail by being abridged. The story skips detail and the listener is left wondering what they missed. Either buy the book or wait for the unabridged version.
Really enjoyed it - wish it had gone on longer!
I have loved Jilly Cooper's books about horses since Riders started it all. This one did not disappoint! It was so much fun to get involved with all of my old favorite characters again - Rupert, Billy and now their offspring! A fun book that delivered exactly what I expected!
    Excellent except....
It's great to see Jilly Cooper return once again to the Horse world, Rupert Campbell Black and all. Excentric characters, colourful backdrops of 'rural' England and animals with personalities greater than their human companions make for fantastic listening. Unfortunatly by the end of the book every, and I mean EVERY character be it human or animal gets on your nerves. Jilly Cooper allows a bit of hero to show in some of the characters but mostly she shows how completely horrible people can be to each other and the animals around them. Lastly the ending was more of a brick wall at 120 mph then the tapering off of her other books.

    Language: English

    Publisher: Redwood Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Under the Table Books is a funny, sexy, thought-provoking novel of stories. Underscored by his original piano compositions, Todd Walton's dramatic reading of his novel brings to life the inviting and mysterious world of a one-of-a-kind bookstore, haven to a fascinating family of social outcasts, visionaries, and cutting-edge artists. This mythically real bookstore is both community center and grand experiment in pragmatic mysticism.
The cast includes poets, musicians, master chefs, a 10-year-old genius, a former movie star, 88-year-old identical twins, and a homeless savant who may have once been the richest man on earth. Yet for all their eccentricities, each character is an authentic and lovable soul with whom readers and listeners will identify and care deeply about as this first volume of an ongoing saga builds to its myriad dramatic conclusions.

"[T]hese stories add up to one great big story that knocked me out." (Bruce Anderson, Editor, The Anderson Valley Advertiser)

  • Stripper Lessons Audiobook by John O'Brien

    Title: Stripper Lessons
    Author: John O'Brien
    Narrator: Greg Thornton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-03-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
John O'Brien's books have established him as a writer who communicated the voice of the loner with blistering realness and unmistakable force. Stripper Lessons is perhaps O'Brien's most interior and intense novel, a powerful story of one man's obsessive search to belong.
    Critic Reviews:
"This posthumously released novel by the late O'Brien, author of Leaving Las Vegas, is an introspective and surprisingly compassionate study of a loner, Carroll. He is middle aged, unmarried, and friendless. His job as a file clerk is a series of humiliations large and small. His life, such as it is, centers on Indiscretions, a strip joint. Although the surroundings are seedy, Carroll goes there nightly with the rather benign expectation that one of the waitresses or strippers will share a real conversation with him. He eventually meets Stevie, a new dancer--and she actually talks to him! He falls for her right then and there. Discarding his protective emotional shell, Carroll shares his fears, ideas, and hopes with her. But he has picked someone with a very limited interest in him, and, as this point begins to come home, Carroll wonders if life wasn't better inside that shell after all. A sensitive and understated novel." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliantly flawed.
Wow. I bought this on Kindle to read on my phone during the end of my shift. That was about 6 AM. By 9 AM I was finished. Something about O'Brien's writing just sweeps you away.
This is a perfect portrayal of a man I would consider to be somewhat of an incel (involuntary celibate). It's a darker, more realistic portrayal of the lead character in "The 40 Year Old Virgin". Something about the character's sweet nature keeps this novel from being depressing. It's the most upbeat novel about loneliness and alienation I have ever read.
O'Brien's writing and style are just beautiful. As someone who writes fiction myself I found myself jealous of his talent, he had such a way with words. His writing reminds me very much of J.D Salinger or Bret Easton Ellis.
I did find that the author had a very narrow view of the world, it would have been fine if it was confined to the viewpoint of the main character but every once in a while we slip into the heads of secondary characters, and their views and thoughts only serve to confirm the protagonist's view of the world. The shallow, douchebag businessman also happens to think in a totally shallow way. Most of the side characters are flat, almost ciphers.
The good of this book far outweighs the bad.
Some people might take issue with the lack of physical description and fine details in general, but I find that my imagination filled in the blanks and allowed to make this novels somewhat of a more personal experience. He let me imagine the stripper love interest in my own way which made her more real to me in some ways.
I could ramble on forever about this novel. It's the first John O'Brien book I have read, and I plan to read the rest of his work now. I can't help but feeling sad that he killed himself in real life, he was obviously a lonely, alienated person.

Moving from the '70s to the '90s, Guilty Pleasures invites listeners into the affluent arena of shocking acts and stunning revelations that is the South Florida world of the Folsby clan.

    Guilty pleasures by Lawrence Sanders
The Fullsby family is into publishing and Barbara has just graduated from college. She informs her daddy that she wants to go into the business after her month long visit with her girlfriend to France and other places.
They share a different kind of love for one another. Her mother is bedridden and doesn't have all her brain when they talk to her.
Brett, her brother is a playboy. Although he loves women he also loves men. Nothing is too good for them. All the dates they have from both sexes.
Story also follows a judge who has a woman who does housekeeping for him and other things... her son is being mentored by the judge and he hopes to get him a job as a lawyer, he's black and he can push him into places he'd not even try to accomplish.
They are at the party were Emmett, the publisher president is retiring and giving his shares of the company to the children. Amazing how he splits his funds between the kids. And he's sailing indefinitely.....
Blackmail ensues and you can't believe the details!
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
    horrid, tawdry, and worthless
This cheap and tawdry little work is nearly too disgusting for words. Five minutes into the abridged audio version, we find the protagonist (a 22 year old woman) having sex with her own father, something she's been doing with enthusiasm since the age of 17. By 20 minutes into the tape, my skin was crawling and I felt like I needed a bath. Everyone in the story seems to be having loveless raunchy sex with everyone else without regard for gender, age, race, or class. As a result, the reader is immersed into a messy stew of incest, infidelity, impotence, hetero- and homo- sexual escapades, and 'daring' interracial couplings, as well as suicide, and financial shenanigans.
